BACKGROUND: Despite a trend towards combining abdominoplasty with breast reduction surgery, so called "mommy makeovers", the safety of this combined approach has been the subject of debate, with previous research yielding conflicting results. We evaluated the risk for complications and revision associated with adding abdominoplasty to bilateral breast reduction surgery. METHODS: We conducted a 10-year single-center retrospective chart review of bilateral breast reduction patients in Nova Scotia...

OBJECTIVES: There has been a recent proliferation in treatment options for patients with metastatic breast cancer. Such treatments often involve trade-offs between overall survival and side effects. Our study aims to estimate the trade-offs that could be used to inform decision-making at the individual and policy level. DESIGN: We designed a discrete choice experiment (DCE) to look at preferences for avoiding severity levels of side effects when choosing treatment for metastatic breast cancer...

Differences in tumor biology and genetic predisposition have been suggested as factors influencing overall survival and increased mortality in Black breast and ovarian cancer patients. Therefore, it is key to evaluate genetic susceptibilities in Afro-Caribbean patients because the black population in the US is not homogeneous. Identifying a high incidence of hereditary breast and ovarian cancer (HBOC) in Afro-Caribbean countries can lead to understanding the pattern of inherited traits in US-Caribbean immigrants and their subsequent generations...

Introduction: Breast reduction mammoplasty (BRM) is a common procedure performed by plastic surgeons treating patients with hypermastia. It is customary to give preoperative prophylactic intravenous antibiotics for BRM, followed by several days of postoperative prophylactic oral antibiotics, despite the lack of evidence of their effectiveness in preventing surgical site infections (SSIs). The purpose of this study is to determine if the addition of prophylactic postoperative antibiotics is more effective in preventing SSIs in comparison to a single dose of preoperative prophylactic antibiotics in BRM...

Policy-makers need to rethink the connections between the economy and health. The World Health Organization Council on the Economics of Health for All has called for human and planetary health and well-being to be moved to the core of decision-making to build economies for health. Doing so involves valuing and measuring what matters, more and better health financing, innovation for the common good and rebuilding public sector capacity. We build on this thinking to argue that breastfeeding should be recognized in food and well-being statistics, while investments in breastfeeding should be considered a carbon offset in global financing arrangements for sustainable food, health and economic systems...

IL-21 is a cytokine with versatile antitumor and pro-tumorigenic activities. It is mainly produced by CD4+ T cells and B cells are one of its pivotal targets. In this study, we assessed and compared the expression of IL-21 by CD4+ T cells and the IL-21 receptor (IL-21R) on B cells in the peripheral blood of women with breast cancer and healthy individuals. Blood samples were taken from both patients and controls. Mononuclear cells were seperated using Ficoll-Hypaque density gradient centrifugation. These isolated cells were then stained with either anti-CD19/anti-IL-21R or anti-CD4/anti-IL-21 antibodies and analyzed using flow cytometry...

BACKGROUND: Ultrasound-guided percutaneous cryoablation (PCA) for early-stage breast cancer (ESBC) can be performed under local anesthesia in an outpatient clinic. This study continues a pilot stage to examine local control, safety, patient quality of life (QoL), satisfaction and cosmetic outcomes of cryoablation for ESBC. METHODS: PCA was performed under local anesthesia for patients with primary ESBC, followed by radiation and endocrine therapies. Oncologic outcomes were examined by imaging (mammography, ultrasound, MRI) at baseline and 1, 6, 12, 24, 36, and 60 months post-cryoablation...

BACKGROUND: A family of 4H-benzo[d][1,3]oxazines were obtained from a group of N-(2-alkynyl)aryl benzamides precursors via gold(I) catalysed chemoselective 6-exo-dig C-O cyclization. BACKGROUND: Current clinical markers overestimate the recurrence risk in many lymph node negative (LNN) breast cancer (BC) patients such that a majority of these low-risk patients unnecessarily receive systemic treatments. We tested if differential microRNA expression in primary tumors allows reliable identification of indolent LNN BC patients to provide an improved classification tool for overtreatment reduction in this patient group. Gemcitabine is a nucleoside analog effective against a number of cancers. However, it has an oral bioavailability of less than 10%, due to its high hydrophilicity and low permeability through the intestinal epithelium. Therefore, the aim of this project was to develop a novel nanoparticulate drug delivery system for the oral delivery of gemcitabine to improve its oral bioavailability. In this study, gemcitabine-loaded β-glucan NPs were fabricated using a film-casting method followed by a freezer-milling technique...

In monarchE, adjuvant abemaciclib significantly improved invasive disease-free survival (IDFS) and distant relapse-free survival (DRFS), with sustained benefit beyond the 2-year treatment period. Abemaciclib dose reductions were allowed to proactively manage adverse events. Exploratory analyses to investigate the impact of dose reductions on efficacy were conducted. Across the three patient subgroups as defined by relative dose intensity (≤66%, 66-93%, ≥93%), the estimated 4-year IDFS rates were generally consistent (87...

Paclitaxel (PTX) is one of the first-line chemotherapeutic agents for treating breast cancer. However, PTX resistance remains a major hurdle in breast cancer therapy. Crocin, the main chemical constituent of saffron, shows anti-cancer activity against various types of cancer. However, the effect of crocin on the resistance of PTX in breast cancer is still unknown. CCK-8 and TUNEL assays were employed to detect cell viability and apoptosis, respectively. The targets of crocin were predicted using HERB database and the targets associated with breast cancer were acquired using GEPIA database...

In this editorial, we have analyzed the historical evolution of rectal and breast cancer surgery, focusing on the progressive reduction of demolitive approaches and the increasing use of more conservative strategies, accompanied by a growing emphasis on perioperative treatments aimed at enhancing surgical outcomes. All of these changes have been made possible due to an increased awareness and understanding of oncological diseases and improved perioperative treatments.
