Gastric cancer with peritoneal dissemination is difficult to treat surgically, and frequently recurs and metastasizes. Currently, there is no effective treatment for this disease, and there is an urgent need to elucidate the molecular mechanisms underlying peritoneal dissemination and metastasis. Our previous study demonstrated that galectin-4 participates in the peritoneal dissemination of poorly differentiated gastric cancer cells. In this study, the glycan profiles of cell surface proteins and glycosphingolipids (GSLs) of the original (wild), galectin-4 knockout (KO), and rescue cells were investigated to understand the precise mechanisms involved in the galectin-4-mediated regulation of associated molecules, especially with respect to glycosylation...

BACKGROUND: Advances in treatment of peritoneal surface malignancies including cytoreductive surgery and hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (CRS±HIPEC) have led to long-term survivorship, yet the subsequent quality of life (QOL) and values of these patients are unknown. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Survivors were offered surveys via online support groups. Novel items assessed how patients prioritized experience, costs, longevity, and wellbeing. RESULTS: Of the 453 gastrointestinal/hepatobiliary (GI/HPB) surgical patients that responded, 74 underwent CRS±HIPEC and were 54±12 years old, 87% female, and 93% white...

INTRODUCTION: Ovarian cancer is the leading cause of death among all gynecological malignancies. Most patients present with an advanced stage of the disease. The routes of spread in ovarian cancer include peritoneal dissemination, direct invasion, and lymphatic or hematogenous spread, with peritoneal and lymphatic spread being the most common among them. The flow direction of the peritoneal fluid makes the right subphrenic space a target site for peritoneal metastases, and the most frequently affected anatomical area in advanced cases is the right upper quadrant...

BACKGROUND: Diffuse malignant peritoneal mesothelioma (DMPM) is a rare and aggressive primary peritoneal disease, with recommended treatment, in eligible patients, of a combination of complete cytoreductive surgery (CRS) and hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC). As treatment is multimodal, there is a wide heterogeneity of HIPEC protocols precluding clear comparisons. Standardization at an international level is required. METHODS: The Peritoneal Surface Oncology Group International (PSOGI) designated a steering committee to produce consensus recommendations for HIPEC regimens, adapted to each etiology...

Gastric cancer (GC) continues to be one of the leading types of malignancies worldwide, despite an ongoing decrease in incidence. It is the fifth most frequent type of cancer in the world and the fourth leading cause of cancer death. Peritoneal metastases (PMs) occur in 20-30% of cases during the natural history of the disease. Systemic chemotherapy (SC) is undoubtedly the standard of care for patients with GC and PMs. However, with the development of highly effective regimens (SC combined with intraperitoneal chemotherapy), significant tumor shrinkage has been observed in many patients with synchronous GC and PMs, allowing some to undergo curative resection "conversion surgery" with long-term survival...

The combination of cytoreductive surgery (CRS) and hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC) showed promising results in selected patients, but standardization is lacking so far. The use of open cytoreductive surgery (CRS) and hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC) has shown improved oncological survival in terms of treating peritoneal surface malignancies (PSM). However, this procedure often comes with associated morbidity. The move towards use of laparoscopic surgery in this field is postulated to lead to a reduction in morbidity and earlier return to function, but literature on its use for CRS and HIPEC has been scarce. We performed a retrospective review of 6 patients with PSM who underwent laparoscopic CRS and HIPEC in our institution and analysed the patient characteristics, oncological history, perioperative and postoperative outcomes...

Urachal carcinoma (UC) is a rare and aggressive tumor arising from the urachal remnants, with the potential for peritoneal dissemination. Patients diagnosed with UC often have a poor prognosis. To date, there is no standardized treatment. Our objective is to present two cases of patients with peritoneal carcinomatosis (PC) secondary to an UC, who were treated with cytoreductive surgery (CRS) and hyperthermic peroperative intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC). A review of the literature on CRS and HIPEC in UC suggests CRS and HIPEC to be a safe and viable treatment option...

Hepatoid adenocarcinoma (HAC) is an extremely rare disease, which could develop from any thoraco-abdominal organ and which exhibits features mimicking hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Its diagnosis is thus highly challenging, so is the treatment of that disease. So far, 12 cases have been reported in the literature as issued from the peritoneum. These primary peritoneal HAC were associated with a dismal prognosis and heterogenous management. Two additional cases were described here, managed in a multidisciplinary way as rare peritoneal surface malignancies in an expert center, following the strategy based on a comprehensive tumor burden extension assessment and a radical approach combining iterative complete cytoreductive surgeries followed by hyperthermic intra-peritoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC) and limited systemic chemotherapy sequences...

Extrapelvic endometriosis is a rare presentation of endometriosis with atypical clinical symptoms. It can mimic peritoneal surface malignancy, as well as some abdominal infectious diseases. A 29-year-old Moroccan woman presented with abdominal pain, progressive abdominal distention, and an intermittent inflammatory syndrome. Imaging revealed multiple, progressively growing abdominal cysts. She had elevated tumor markers CA125 and CA19.9. Despite thorough investigation, several differential diagnoses persisted for a long time...

UNLABELLED: A previous report from the Indian HIPEC registry showed acceptable early survival and morbidity in patients undergoing cytoreductive surgery (CRS) + / - hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC). The goal of this retrospective study was to evaluate the long-term outcomes in these patients. Three hundred seventy-four patients treated from December 2010 to December 2016 and enrolled in the Indian HIPEC registry were included. All patients had completed 5 years from the date of surgery...

STK11 adnexal tumor is a recently described entity with less than 25 cases reported to date. These aggressive tumors typically occur in paratubal/paraovarian soft tissues, have characteristically striking morphologic and immunohistochemical heterogeneity, and harbor pathognomonic alterations in STK11 . These occur almost exclusively in adult patients, with only one reported in a pediatric patient (to our knowledge). A previously healthy 16-year-old female presented with acute abdominal pain. Imaging studies revealed large bilateral solid and cystic adnexal masses, ascites, and peritoneal nodules...
