Hemorrhagic bowel syndrome (HBS) is characterized by a dissecting intramucosal hematoma at the small bowel, causing obstruction and severe hemorrhage in dairy cattle. Recent investigation revealed the presence of early-stage lesions in cows affected by HBS. These are presumed to be the initial stage of the hematoma, as both share unique dissection of the lamina muscularis mucosae (LMM) as histological hallmark. Early-stage lesions of HBS have not been characterized in greater detail, and neither has the hypothesis of mucosal abrasion as etiology been explored...

KEY CLINICAL MESSAGE: Vaginal cuff dehiscence post-hysterectomy is rare yet significant. Early recognition and prompt surgical intervention are crucial to prevent complications like bowel infarction. Consider second-look laparotomy in cases of uncertain bowel viability. ABSTRACT: Vaginal cuff dehiscence (VCD) is a rare but potentially life-threatening complication following a hysterectomy characterized by the separation of the vaginal vault. This condition, which may result in vaginal evisceration (VE), presents a significant risk of pelvic contents, particularly the small bowel, protruding into the vagina...

Postoperative intussusception (POI) after abdominal and non-abdominal operations is a rare but recognized condition discussed several times in literature. There are scarce reports regarding POI in children operated primarily for intussusception. We discuss three such cases that were seen in our institution in the last two years. The patients showed symptoms of atypical ileus that failed to resolve two to eight days following primary surgery. Ultrasound reported intussusception and surgical intervention was sought...

INTRODUCTION: Midgut volvulus in adults based on congenital malrotation, which required emergency surgery, may occur under the stimulation of adverse factors and is rare and easy to be misdiagnosed. PRESENTATION OF CASE: A young male was taken to the emergency room of a local hospital after six hours abdominal pain. Computed tomography (CT) shows intestinal volvulus and exploratory laparotomy was performed. Postoperative CT revealed remission of small intestinal torsion and congenital malrotation of the midgut...

Colonic lipomas are benign masses typically found incidentally during routine screening exams. They rarely grow large enough to become symptomatic. While most colonic lipomas are small and do not lead to complications, giant lipomas can present with symptoms ranging from changes in bowel patterns and mild abdominal pain to bowel obstruction. Ulcerated giant colonic lipomas are even more rare findings on screening colonoscopies. Diagnosis in this context can be challenging, and resection is warranted in most cases...

Phytobezoars is a rare disease and less common in Western countries. The stomach is the primary site for these formations, and endoscopic treatment involving fragmentation and extraction has traditionally been the most effective approach. However, medical treatments using enzymatic and chemical agents, such as cellulase and Coca-Cola, aimed at dissolving the bezoars, have also been utilized, showing varying degrees of resolution success. Notably, the oral dissolution treatment with Coca-Cola has emerged as a promising, simpler, and more cost-effective method...

Diaphragmatic hernia (DH) is an uncommon cause of small bowel obstruction (SBO), particularly in the absence of trauma. This rarity can pose a diagnostic challenge, leading to significant delays in treatment and increased morbidity. We report a case of a 79-year-old male patient who presented with acute signs of small bowel obstruction. The patient had no reported history of trauma. Computed tomography (CT) of the abdomen revealed a diaphragmatic hernia causing small bowel obstruction. The patient underwent an initial laparoscopy, which was converted to laparotomy, small bowel resection, and subsequent hernia repair...

A jejunal intussusception as a presentation of retroperitoneal liposarcoma (RLPS) is a rare occurrence. The majority of RLPS are presented as an abdominal mass, however, having a jejunal obstruction is an interesting case. The aim is to describe the management of jejunal intussusception secondary to atypical lipomatous tumours with concurrent RLPS. A 61-year-old lady presented with a sudden onset of intestinal obstruction with 1 month of constitutional symptoms and an enlarging right lumbar mass. Computed tomography showed a small bowel intussusception with diffuse peritoneal and retroperitoneal lipomatosis...

Intussusception is defined as the telescoping of bowel into itself. Intussusception is the leading cause of bowel obstruction in children, but it is rare in adults [1, 2]. It has a pathological intramural or extramural lead point. In adults, it accounts for 1%-5% of cases of bowel obstruction [3, 4]. Unlike presentation in the paediatric population of cramping abdominal pain, bloody mucus, and palpable mass in right iliac fossa, presentation in adults can be more varied and non-specific [1, 4]. Hence, diagnosis of small bowel intussusception (SBI) can be challenging, requiring a higher degree of clinical suspicion [5]...

Common complications following laparoscopic appendectomy include wound infection, bleeding, intra-abdominal abscess, small bowel obstruction, stump leakage, and stump appendicitis. Here, we presented a case reporting detailing a rare complication following laparoscopic appendectomy: the development of a metastatic neck abscess induced by Klebsiella pneumoniae(K. pneumoniae) . A 49-year-old male underwent emergency laparoscopic surgery with prophylactic antibiotic administration for acute appendicitis. Subsequently, he experienced persistent neck pain and fever postoperatively, prompting further investigation...

Adult intussusception is an infrequent occurrence typically resulting from an identifiable lead point of a benign or malignant etiology. Here, we present a case of a 19-year-old male who presented to the emergency department with complaints of abdominal pain, intractable nausea, and fluctuations between bloody diarrhea and constipation. These symptoms had begun two months prior and had increased in severity, resulting in significant appetite changes. An abdominal and pelvic computed tomography scan without contrast was obtained, which showed evidence of intussusception of the ileocecum into the transverse colon with resultant small bowel obstruction...

A relatively rare inherited condition known as Peutz-Jeghers syndrome (PJS) causes mucocutaneous pigmentation and gastrointestinal hamartomatous polyps. These polyps are non-cancerous, but the presence of PJS significantly increases the chances of developing various types of cancers, such as colorectal, pancreatic, gastric, and breast cancer. The purpose of this review article is to give an abbreviated summary of what is currently known about this syndrome, covering its clinical symptoms, pathophysiology, genetics, and management...

Cocaine represents one of the most frequently used recreational drugs worldwide. Cocaine-related disorders mostly affect the nervous and cardiovascular system, although gastrointestinal complications are not negligible and sometimes life-threatening. The most common gastrointestinal manifestations of cocaine abuse are ulceration, infarction, perforation, ischemic enterocolitis, and rarely hemorrhage, with mesenteric ischemia being the underlying pathophysiological mechanism. Herein, we report a rare case of cocaine-induced small bowel obstruction in a young female patient, caused by chronic mesenteric ischemia and excessive intestinal wall fibrosis...

Magnetic foreign body ingestion poses a threat especially if more than one is ingested. If consumed alone, small magnetic foreign bodies are likely to pass without significant event; however, when multiple magnets are ingested, they can be attracted to each other through the intestinal wall, which may lead to serious consequences and complications, including bowel perforation, obstruction, peritonitis, and death. We report a case of a 2-years male child patient presented with multiple small round magnetic beads ingestion from a magnetic pendant that appeared like a necklace pearl after conglomeration on abdominal radiograph...
