BACKGROUND: Malignant salivary gland tumors are rare. However, their morphological overlap and difficulty to differentiate benign from malignant makes diagnosing such diseases a challenging task. Geographical variation in distribution of these diseases is well documented in the literature. This study aims to review the histological and epidemiological variations of malignant salivary gland tumors in Sudanese patients considering the new WHO 2022 classification. METHODOLOGY: This retrospective study included malignant salivary gland tumours in our lab spanning from the period of 2014 to 2022...

BACKGROUND: Sleep disorders such as insomnia can lead to a range of health problems. The high risk of side effects and drug abuse of traditional pharmacotherapy calls for a safer non-pharmacotherapy. AIMS: To examine the use and efficacy of weighted blankets in improving sleep and related disorders in different populations and explore the possible mechanisms. METHODS: A literature search was conducted using PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, MEDLINE, Cochrane Library and CNKI databases...

The textile industry, with its extensive use of dyes and chemicals, stands out as a significant source of water pollution. Exposure to certain textile dyes, such as azo dyes and their breakdown products like aromatic amines, has been associated with health concerns like skin sensitization, allergic reactions, and even cancer in humans. Annually, the worldwide production of synthetic dyes approximates 7 × 107 tons, of which the textile industry accounts for over 10,000 tons. Inefficient dyeing procedures result in the discharge of 15-50% of azo dyes, which do not adequately bind to fibers, into wastewater...

Sosuga virus (SOSV), a rare human pathogenic paramyxovirus, was first discovered in 2012 when a person became ill after working in South Sudan and Uganda. During an ecological investigation, several species of bats were sampled and tested for SOSV RNA and only one species, the Egyptian rousette bat (ERBs; Rousettus aegyptiacus ), tested positive. Since that time, multiple other species have been sampled and ERBs in Uganda have continued to be the only species of bat positive for SOSV infection. Subsequent studies of ERBs with SOSV demonstrated that ERBs are a competent host for SOSV and shed this infectious virus while exhibiting only minor infection-associated pathology...

BACKGROUND: Early isolation and care for Ebola Disease patients at Ebola Treatment Units (ETU) curb outbreak spread. We evaluated time to ETU entry and associated factors during the 2022 Sudan virus disease (SVD) outbreak in Uganda. METHODS: We included persons with RT-PCR-confirmed SVD with onset September 20-November 30, 2022. We categorized days from symptom onset to ETU entry ('delays') as short (≤2), moderate (3-5), and long (≥6); the latter two were 'delayed isolation'...

Background Sepsis is one of the most common causes of morbidity and mortality in newborns. Diagnosis of neonatal sepsis may be difficult because the clinical presentations are often nonspecific. Neonatal sepsis may have an early onset (zero to three days) or a late onset (four days or later). Onset is most rapid in premature neonates. In this study, we aimed to assess the correlation between positive cultures, high C-reactive protein (CRP) levels, and the diagnosis of neonatal sepsis. Methodology This descriptive, prospective, cross-sectional study was undertaken over four months starting from December 15, 2019, to April 15, 2020, in Atbara Teaching Hospital, Sudan...

BACKGROUND This retrospective study of 42 patients with popliteal cysts (or Baker cysts) aimed to compare the effects on duration and outcomes of arthroscopic surgical debridement with and without the use of cyst injection with methylene blue (MB). MATERIAL AND METHODS Medical records of patients who underwent conventional arthroscopic surgery (n=20) or arthroscopic surgery after MB injection (n=22) for popliteal cysts between 2018 and 2021 were reviewed. The MB group underwent arthroscopic popliteal cystectomy with MB as the marker, and the control group underwent conventional arthroscopic popliteal cystectomy...

In this study, nitrogen-doped carbon dots (N-CDs) were facilely fabricated by one-pot hydrothermal method with levulinic acid and triethanolamine. A fluorescent sensor array was established for identifying azo compounds including Sudan Orange G (SOG), p-diaminoazobenzene, p-aminoazobenzene, azobenzene and quantitative detection of SOG. Experimental results revealed that azo compounds could quench the fluorescent intensity of N-CDs. Owing to various azo compounds showing different affinities to N-CDs, the sensor array exhibited different fluorescence quenching changes, which were further analyzed with principal component analysis to discriminate azo compounds...

Giving birth during adolescence is linked to a variety of negative outcomes, including poor health and well-being. Girls who have been displaced by conflict are at increased risk for becoming young mothers. While prevalence rates and health outcomes have been documented, rarely have the complex personal narratives of early motherhood been examined from the perspectives of mothers themselves, particularly in the Global South. This study relies on in-depth, inductive, narrative analysis of qualitative interviews with 67 young mothers and 10 relatives in South Sudan and the Kurdistan Region of Iraq (KRI) who had been displaced by conflict...

During a 2021 parasitological survey of birds in the Nyae Nyae-Khaudum Dispersal Area (Kavango-Zambezi Transfrontier Conservation Area, Namibia), we collected 9 specimens of Dendritobilharzia pulverulenta (Braun, 1901) Skrjabin, 1924 infecting the blood (heart lumen) of a white-backed duck, Thalassornis leuconotus (Eyton, 1838) (Anseriformes: Anatidae), and a fulvous whistling duck, Dendrocygna bicolor (Vieillot, 1816) (Anatidae). These flukes were fixed for morphology and preserved for DNA extraction. We assigned our specimens to DendritobilharziaSkrjabin and Zakharow, 1920 because they were strongly dorso-ventrally flattened in both sexes and had an intestinal cyclocoel with a zig-zag common cecum with lateral dendritic ramifications, numerous testes posterior to the cyclocoel and flanking the dendritic ramifications, and a tightly compacted convoluted ovary as well as lacking an oral sucker, ventral sucker, and gynaecophoric canal...

Continuous remodeling of the heart can result in adverse events such as reduced myocardial function and heart failure. Available evidence indicates that ferroptosis is a key process in the emergence of cardiac disease. P2 family purinergic receptor P2X7 receptor (P2X7R) activation plays a crucial role in numerous aspects of cardiovascular disease. The aim of this study was to elucidate any potential interactions between P2X7R and ferroptosis in cardiac remodeling stimulated by angiotensin II (Ang II), and P2X7R knockout mice were utilized to explore the role of P2X7R and elucidate its underlying mechanism through molecular biological methods...

Polymorphism of killer-cell immunoglobulin-like receptors (KIRs) and their HLA class I ligands impacts the effector activity of cytotoxic NK cell and T cell subsets. Therefore, understanding the extent and implications of KIR and HLA class I genetic polymorphism across various populations is important for immunological and medical research.
