AIM: Reactivation of hepatitis B virus (HBV) after liver transplantation (LT) remains a problem; thus, development of more effective HBV reactivation prophylaxis is desirable. We evaluated the efficacy of a combination of a long-term nucleotide analog (NA), such as entecavir (ETV) or tenofovir alafenamide (TAF), and short-term hepatitis B immunoglobulin (HBIG) in preventing HBV reactivation and compared it with conventional HBV prophylaxis. METHODS: Between February 1999 and August 2023, 135 patients underwent living-donor liver transplantation for liver cirrhosis or acute liver failure caused by HBV infection or received an LT from a hepatitis B core antibody-positive donor...

Eleutherococcus senticosus (Rupr. et Maxim.) Maxim. (ES) has gained popularity for its adaptogenic, immunostimulant, and anti-inflammatory properties. Because of overexploitation of the roots, the species is considered to be endangered and has been put on the Red List in some countries (e.g., the Republic of Korea). Therefore, the fruits of E. senticosus might be explored as a new sustainable source of compounds with adaptogenic activity. This study aimed to assess the chemical composition and the safety profile (hepatotoxicity, blood morphology, biochemical parameters of blood plasma) of E...

BACKGROUND & AIMS: XBP1, most conserved transcription factor of endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress, plays important roles in physiological and pathological settings and has profound effects on disease progression and prognosis, so it's necessary to investigate XBP1 in macrophage-originated sterile inflammation during liver ischemia/reperfusion injury (IRI). Macrophage XBP1 expression and liver injury are analyzed in patients undergoing ischemia-related hepatectomy. METHODS: A myeloid-specific male XBP1-knockout (XBP1M-KO ) strain is created for function and mechanism of XBP1 on macrophage-derived sterile inflammation in murine liver IRI with in-vitro parallel research...

Mammalian cells release several membrane-enclosed vesicles called extracellular vesicles. Those vesicles can contain several molecules such as proteins, DNA and various RNA. Therefore, extracellular vesicles can act as a target delivery system and exert multiple biological effects. Several works demonstrated that extracellular vesicles are increased or dysregulated in patients with cirrhosis, and they can be predictive of disease progression, complications and mortality. This review aims to summarize and highlight the role of extracellular vesicles in the cirrhotic patient and how they correlate with the degree of disease and with complications, particularly with the development of portal thrombosis and hepatocellular carcinoma...

INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVES: The impact of sleep on metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) in American adults remains unclear. This study aimed to address the relationship of sleep patterns and disorders with MASLD and liver fibrosis comprehensively. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This cross-sectional study included adult participants from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2017-2020. Multivariate adjusted regression analysis were used to examine the association of sleep with MASLD and liver fibrosis...

Microscopic colitis is an inflammatory bowel disease that commonly presents with debilitating chronic watery diarrhea. Recent epidemiologic studies and randomized trials of therapeutics have improved our understanding of the disease. Medications such as non-steroidal anti-inflammatories, proton pump inhibitors, and antidepressants have traditionally been considered as the main risk factors for microscopic colitis. However, recent studies have challenged this observation. Additionally, a number of epidemiologic studies have identified other risk factors for the disease including older age, female sex, smoking, alcohol use, immune-mediated diseases, and select gastrointestinal infections...

Metabolic dysfunction-associated fatty liver disease (MAFLD) or metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD), has become the leading cause of chronic liver disease worldwide. Optimal dietary intervention strategies for MAFLD are not standardized. This study aimed to achieve consensus on prevention of MAFLD through dietary modification. A multidisciplinary panel of 55 international experts, including specialists in hepatology, gastroenterology, dietetics, endocrinology and other medical specialties from six continents collaborated in a Delphi-based consensus development process...

Oncoviruses can integrate into the host genome and cause tumorigenesis. In particular, hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection accounts for more than 50% of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) worldwide. We revealed the global geographical disparity of HBV integration that the landscape of HBV integration between HCC tumor and non-tumorous liver varied in regional cohorts, suggesting the different degrees of clonal enrichment. Most HBV integrations were positionally enriched at telomeres and centromeres (T&C) and they highlighted the novel co-involvement of HBV integration, which likely introduces genomic instability in HCC development...

OBJECTIVE: Direct-acting antiviral (DAA) drugs have resulted in high rates of virological cure in chronic hepatitis C (CHC)-infected patients. We used noninvasive tests to assess fibrosis in subjects who had been cured with DAA. METHODS: Retrospective data collection (2014-2019) from the medical record of CHC patients at the hepatology clinic was performed. Subjects co-infected with HIV and hepatitis B, post-liver transplant, and lost to follow-up were excluded...
