Pompe disease (PD) is a rare metabolic disorder with progressive neuromuscular consequences that negatively impact a child's development and quality of life (QoL). Despite an improved prognosis with treatment, the risk for early death due cardiorespiratory crisis remains. Parents not only face physical fatigue and family distress in coping with the child's special needs but also experience emotions, worries, and unexpressed needs (a "humanistic burden") that require supportive interventions. Fourteen parents of children with PD completed an online self-report questionnaire assessing their child's QoL, their own parental burden of care, and disease-related issues...

With as many as 13% of adolescents diagnosed with depressive disorders each year, prevention of depressive disorders has become a key priority for the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH). Currently, we have no widely available interventions to prevent these disorders. To address this need, we developed a multi-health system collaboration to develop and evaluate the primary care based technology "behavioral vaccine," Competent Adulthood Transition with Cognitive-Behavioral Humanistic and Interpersonal Therapy (CATCH-IT)...

UNLABELLED: WHAT IS KNOWN ON THE SUBJECT?: Safewards was developed for acute mental health units, and while could be effective in forensic mental health services, there are some gaps in the model for such services, where factors including offending behaviour and longer term care can have an influence. WHAT THIS PAPER ADDS TO EXISTING KNOWLEDGE?: The importance of acknowledging and addressing responses related to offending behaviour in forensic mental health settings, while also understanding the vulnerability of the consumer group and responsibilities to the maintenance of professional boundaries...

BACKGROUND: Artificial intelligence (AI) is transforming the mental health care environment. AI tools are increasingly accessed by clients and service users. Mental health professionals must be prepared not only to use AI but also to have conversations about it when delivering care. Despite the potential for AI to enable more efficient and reliable and higher-quality care delivery, there is a persistent gap among mental health professionals in the adoption of AI. OBJECTIVE: A needs assessment was conducted among mental health professionals to (1) understand the learning needs of the workforce and their attitudes toward AI and (2) inform the development of AI education curricula and knowledge translation products...

GPT-4 (Generative Pre-trained Transformer 4) is an AI system with a chat interface. The number of studies testing GPT-4 in clinical applications has been increasing. We hypothesized that GPT-4 would be able to suggest management strategies for medical issues in elderly oncology patients, similar to those provided by geriatricians. We compared the responses of GPT-4 to those of a geriatrician for four oncological patients. After these case conferences, none of the patients required admission for medical consultation...

INTRODUCTION: The purpose of this study was to identify whether the incorporation of a combined Patient as teacher (PAT) and arts-based reflection (ABR) program during a surgical clerkship rotation could influence more humanistic perceptions of surgeons, using an innovative evaluation approach. METHODS: A novel, single question evaluation tool was created. Third year medical-students were asked to "list the top 5 attributes of a surgeon, in order of perceived importance" both before and after their surgical clerkship rotations and participation in the PAT/ABR program...

INTRODUCTION: Distress is part of the experiences and care for people with chronic low back pain. However, distress is often pathologised and individualised; it is seen as a problem within the individual in pain and something to be downplayed, avoided, or fixed. To that end, we situate distress as a normal everyday relational experience circulating, affecting, moving in, through, and across bodies. Challenging practices that may amplify distress, we draw on the theorisation of affect as a relational assemblage to analyse physiotherapy clinical encounters in the care of people with chronic low back pain...

INTRODUCTION: Rare diseases are chronic conditions, generally incurable, progressive and disabling, which may result in early death. Access to therapeutic products, both medicines and appropriate medical devices, is essential to prevent the progression of the disease and maintain the patients' quality of life. Pharmacists can be part of health teams, in charge of guiding patients' journey, monitoring pharmacotherapy and identifying risks. This scoping review aims to identify and summarise evidence on the role of pharmacists and its impact in the field of rare diseases...

BACKGROUND: Neuroscientific approaches have historically triggered changes in the conception of creativity and artistic experience, which can be revealed by noting the intersection of these fields of study in terms of variables such as global trends, methodologies, objects of study, or application of new technologies; however, these neuroscientific approaches are still often considered as disciplines detached from the arts and humanities. In this light, the question arises as to what evidence the history of neurotechnologies provides at the intersection of creativity and aesthetic experience...

BACKGROUND: Humanistic care has become an essential quality for modern nurses. However, previous studies have revealed that nursing students lack adequate preparation to meet the needs of patients in intensive care units using a humanistic care approach. OBJECTIVES: To develop a humanistic care digital storytelling programme for intensive care nursing students and assess its acceptance and satisfaction among participants through a satisfaction survey. METHODS: The development of the programme was based on the SHARE framework (S: sense patient's needs; H: help patient out; A: acknowledge patient's feelings; R: respect patient's dignity and privacy; E: explain what is happening) and involved three steps...

BACKGROUND: The elderly admitted to nursing homes have especially suffered the havoc of the COVID-19 pandemic since most of them are not prepared to face such health problems. METHODS: An innovative coordinated on-site medicalization program (MP) in response to a sizeable COVID-19 outbreak in three consecutive waves was deployed, sharing coordination and resources among primary care, the referral hospital, and the eleven residences. The objectives were providing the best possible medical care to residents in their environment, avoiding dehumanization and loneliness of hospital admission, and reducing the saturation of hospitals and the risk of spreading the infection...

Health care should address the holistic gap between health outcomes, spirituality, religion, and humanistic care to optimize patient care. Treating the whole person encompasses both physical and metaphysical elements. Patients want health care professionals to recognize their spiritual and religious preferences, because these matter in their approach to illness, coping, and long-term outcomes.

PURPOSE: Metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer (mCRPC) is a lethal disease that imposes a major burden on patients and healthcare systems. Three structured literature reviews (treatment guidelines, treatment landscape, and human/clinical/patient burden) and one systematic literature review (economic burden) were conducted to better understand the disease burden and unmet needs for patients with late-stage mCRPC, for whom optimal treatment options are unclear. METHODS: Embase® , MEDLINE® , MEDLINE® In-Process, the CENTRAL database (structured and systematic reviews), and the Centre for Reviews and Dissemination database (systematic review only) were searched for English-language records from 2009 to 2021 to identify mCRPC treatment guidelines and studies related to the treatment landscape and the humanistic/economic burden of mCRPC in adult men (aged ≥18 years) of any ethnicity...

BACKGROUND: Exposure to rape, sexual assault and sexual abuse has lifelong impacts for mental health and well-being. Prolonged Exposure (PE), Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT) and Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR) are among the most common interventions offered to survivors to alleviate post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and other psychological impacts. Beyond such trauma-focused cognitive and behavioural approaches, there is a range of low-intensity interventions along with new and emerging non-exposure based approaches (trauma-sensitive yoga, Reconsolidation of Traumatic Memories and Lifespan Integration)...
