Provitamin A (proVA) carotenoid synthesis and degradation are strongly influenced by environmental factors, including during post-harvest storage. Hypobaric and hyperbaric storages increase the shelf-life of many crops, but their effects on proVA carotenoids are not known. Our aim was to investigate the effects of modifications of atmospheric pressure and composition on α - and β -carotene concentration and bioaccessibility during the post-harvest storage of carrots and sweet potatoes. Vegetables were stored for 11-14 days at 20 °C in the dark in chambers with modified pressure and O2 concentrations...

Pneumocephalus is the pathologic collection of air in the intracranial cavity. In sufficient volumes, it can contribute to symptoms ranging from headaches to death. For conservative treatment, oxygen use is commonplace. Although this is an accepted tenet of clinical practice, it is not necessarily founded on robust trials. An electronic search of databases EMBASE and MEDLINE and the Cochrane Library was undertaken as per the 2020 Preferred Reporting Items of Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) statement...

OBJECTIVE: The Los Angeles County Fire Department Lifeguard Division responds to water rescues and medical and dive emergencies across 72 miles of Southern California coastline and Catalina Island. Limited advanced life support resources make cardiac arrest resuscitations logistically challenging during transport to shore or the hyperbaric chamber. This proof-of-concept study looked to determine if an i-Gel (Intersurgical Complete Respiratory Systems, Wokingham, Berkshire, UK) supraglottic airway device would either become dislodged or compromise ventilations during prolonged resuscitation at high speeds over open water with an ongoing automatic chest compression device (ACCD)...

We report the case of a 23-year-old male novice diver who sustained cerebral arterial gas embolism (CAGE) during his open water certification training whilst practising a free ascent as part of the course. He developed immediate but transient neurological symptoms that had resolved on arrival to hospital. Radiological imaging of his chest showed small bilateral pneumothoraces, pneumopericardium and pneumomediastinum. In view of this he was treated with high flow normobaric oxygen rather than recompression, because of the risk of development of tension pneumothorax upon chamber decompression...

INTRODUCTION: Capnography aids assessment of the adequacy of mechanical patient ventilation. Physical and physiological changes in hyperbaric environments create ventilation challenges which make end-tidal carbon dioxide (ETCO2 ) measurement particularly important. However, obtaining accurate capnography in hyperbaric environments is widely considered difficult. This study investigated the EMMA capnograph for hyperbaric use. METHODS: We compared the EMMA capnograph to sidestream capnography and the gold standard arterial carbon dioxide blood gas analysis in a hyperbaric chamber...

INTRODUCTION: To develop the diving capacity in the Swedish armed forces the current air decompression tables are under revision. A new decompression table named SWEN21 has been created to have a projected risk level of 1% for decompression sickness (DCS) at the no stop limits. The aim of this study was to evaluate the safety of SWEN21 through the measurement of venous gas emboli (VGE) in a dive series. METHODS: A total 154 dives were conducted by 47 divers in a hyperbaric wet chamber...

Long COVID-19 patients show systemic inflammation and persistent symptoms such as fatigue and malaise, profoundly affecting their quality of life. Since improving oxygenation can oppose inflammation at multiple tissue levels, we hypothesized that hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) could arrest inflammation progression and thus relieve symptoms of COVID-19. We evaluated oxy-inflammation biomarkers in long COVID-19 subjects treated with HBOT and monitored with non-invasive methods. Five subjects (two athletes and three patients with other comorbidities) were assigned to receive HBOT: 100% inspired O2 at 2...

BACKGROUND: Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) during hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) presents unique challenges due to limited access to patients in cardiac arrest (CA) and the distinct physiological conditions present during hyperbaric therapy. Despite these challenges, guidelines specifically addressing CPR during HBOT are lacking. This review aims to consolidate the available evidence and offer recommendations for clinical practice in this context. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A comprehensive literature search was conducted in PubMed, EMBASE, Cochrane Library, and CINAHL using the search string: "(pressure chamber OR decompression OR hyperbaric) AND (cardiac arrest OR cardiopulmonary resuscitation OR advanced life support OR ALS OR life support OR chest compression OR ventricular fibrillation OR heart arrest OR heart massage OR resuscitation)"...

BACKGROUND: Approaches to chronic wound care are worlds apart: In developing nations, the care of chronic wounds often involves traditional management with local products (eg, honey, boiled potato peels, aloe vera gel, banana leaves); whereas in developed nations, more expensive and technologically advanced products are available (eg, wound vacuum, saline wound chamber, hyperbaric oxygen therapy, antibacterial foam). The cost for wound care plays a significant role in total health care costs, and that cost is expected to rise dramatically...

Sulforaphane (SFN) has attracted much attention due to its ability on antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and anti-apoptotic properties, while its functional targets and underlying mechanism of action on brain injury caused by acute carbon monoxide poisoning (ACOP) have not been fully elucidated. Herein, we used a systematic network pharmacology approach to explore the mechanism of SFN in the treatment of brain damage after ACOP. In this study, the results of network pharmacology demonstrated that there were a total of 81 effective target genes of SFN and 36 drug-disease targets, which were strongly in connection with autophagy-animal signaling pathway, drug metabolism, and transcription disorders in cancer...

Background and Objectives : Thermal skin injuries are a prevalent cause of skin damage, potentially leading to severe morbidity and significant mortality. In this study, we intended to estimate the effects of HBO (hyperbaric oxygen treatment) and antioxidant supplementation with Filipendula ulmaria extract, individually and simultaneously, in the treatment of thermal skin injuries. Materials and Methods : As a thermal skin injury experimental model, we used two-month-old male Wistar albino rats. Our aim was to identify proteins that reflect an acute systemic response to prolonged hyperbaric stress and discover potential biomarker pathways for pulmonary O2 toxicity. The study was a double-blind, randomized, crossover design in trained male Navy diver subjects. Each subject completed two dry resting hyperbaric chamber dives separated by a minimum of one week. One dive exposed the subject to 6.5 h of 100% oxygen (O2 ) at 2ATA. The alternate dive exposed the subjects to an enhanced air nitrox mixture (EAN) containing 30...

BACKGROUND: Normobaric hyperoxia (NBH) and hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) are effective treatment plan for traumatic brain injury (TBI). Carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning accounts for over 50,000 estimated emergency room visits and approximately 1200 deaths per year in the US. Despite the high prevalence, there is a paucity of data looking at the association between laboratory biomarkers and clinical outcomes. Our study investigates the association between myocardial injury as assessed by increased troponin levels and its effect on in-hospital outcomes in CO poisoning.
