Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) is an gamma of herpes virus affecting exclusively humans, was the first oncogenic virus described and is associated with over seven different cancers. Curiously, the exchange of genes during viral infections has enabled the evolution of other cellular organisms, favoring new functions and the survival of the host. EBV has been co-evolving with mammals for hundreds of millions of years, and more than 95% of adults have been infected in one moment of their life. The infection is acquired primarily during childhood, in most cases as an asymptomatic infection...

INTRODUCTION: Patients with sedative overdose may have residual cognitive impairment at the time they are deemed medically cleared for discharge. Impairment could affect the performance of high-risk activities, including driving. The Trail Making Test is an alpha-numeric assessment that can be performed at the bedside to assess cognitive function. We examined whether there were differences in cognitive function when medically cleared between patients that overdosed on sedative and non-sedative drugs...

This paper evaluates an innovative framework for spoken dialect density prediction on children's and adults' African American English. A speaker's dialect density is defined as the frequency with which dialect-specific language characteristics occur in their speech. Rather than treating the presence or absence of a target dialect in a user's speech as a binary decision, instead, a classifier is trained to predict the level of dialect density to provide a higher degree of specificity in downstream tasks. For this, self-supervised learning representations from HuBERT, handcrafted grammar-based features extracted from ASR transcripts, prosodic features, and other feature sets are experimented with as the input to an XGBoost classifier...

The context-based Extended Speech Transmission Index (cESTI) (van Schoonhoven et al., 2022, J. Acoust. Soc. Am. 151, 1404-1415) was successfully applied to predict the intelligibility of monosyllabic words with different degrees of context in interrupted noise. The current study aimed to use the same model for the prediction of sentence intelligibility in different types of non-stationary noise. The necessary context factors and transfer functions were based on values found in existing literature. The cESTI performed similar to or better than the original ESTI when noise had speech-like characteristics...

This study sought to evaluate the perceptions of pressure injury (PI) management staff regarding skin failure (SF). Additionally, an analysis of influencing factors based on the collected data was conducted to establish a foundation for targeted SF training. A descriptive, cross-sectional survey was undertaken in October-November 2023, utilising a convenience sampling method involving selected management staff of PI from 16 provinces in China. A total of 501 nursing participants were included, exhibiting an overall perception level that was moderately low...

When the eyes view separate and incompatible images, the brain suppresses one image and promotes the other into visual awareness. Periods of interocular suppression can be prolonged during continuous flash suppression (CFS) - when one eye views a static 'target' while the other views a complex dynamic stimulus. Measuring the time needed for a suppressed image to break CFS (bCFS) has been widely used to investigate unconscious processing, and the results have generated controversy regarding the scope of visual processing without awareness...

INTRODUCTION: Anti-nuclear antibody (ANA) testing is among the most common immunological test requested in the diagnostic immunology laboratory. The main purpose of this test is to screen for the underlying systemic autoimmune rheumatic diseases (SARDs). The gold standard laboratory method for ANA detection is by the indirect immunofluorescence (IIF) assay. In most laboratories, positive ANA-IIF is reported in terms of titration and pattern. OBJECTIVE: This study was conducted with the aim of determining the correlation between ANA-IIF titration and pattern for the diagnosis of SARDs...

Significant progress has been achieved in enhancing early outcomes for individuals with maple syrup urine disease (MSUD), a rare metabolic disorder that leads to the accumulation of branched-chain amino acids leucine, isoleucine, and valine, where leucine is known as the primary neurotoxic metabolite. Newborn screening is helpful in early diagnosis and implementation of dietary treatment, thus reducing neurological deterioration and complications in young children. However, patients face the life-long challenge of maintaining metabolic control through adherence to a strict low-leucine diet to avoid long-term consequences of chronic hyperleucinemia, which include cognitive deficits, mood disorders, and movement disorders...

Israel is endemic for Old-World cutaneous leishmaniasis. The most common species is Leishmania major. However, the available treatment options are limited. This study's objective was to compare the authors' experience with different antimony intralesional treatments of Leishmania major cutaneous leishmaniasis. A retrospective evaluation was undertaken for cases of Leishmania major cutaneous leishmaniasis treated by pentavalent antimony in a university-affiliated medical centre in Israel. The previous treatment of intralesional sodium stibogluconate (Pentostam®) was compared with the current treatment of meglumine antimoniate (Glucantime®)...

Early diagnosis of genetic myopathies can prevent future complications and provide families with genetic counselling.
