Impedance pneumography (IP) has provided static assessments of subjects' breathing patterns in previous studies. Evaluating the feasibility and limitation of ambulatory IP based respiratory monitoring needs further investigation on clinically relevant exercise designs. The aim of this study was to evaluate the capacity of an advanced IP in ambulatory respiratory monitoring, and its predictive value in independent ventilatory capacity quantification during cardiopulmonary exercise testing (CPET).
Approach:
35 volunteers were examined with the same calibration methodology and CPET exercise protocol comprising phases of rest, unloaded, incremental load, maximum load, recovery and further-recovery...

Tracheal rupture is a very rare but life-threatening complication of endotracheal intubation. It is more common in women and patients older than 50 years old. Overinflation of endotracheal tube cuff and tracheal wall weakening are the most important pathogenetic mechanisms. Laceration sites are located in the posterior membranous wall in most cases. Subcutaneous and mediastinal emphysema and respiratory distress are the most common manifestations. A 55-year-old female presented with postoperative subcutaneous and mediastinal emphysema without dyspnea because of a tear in the posterior tracheal wall...

BACKGROUND: Various forms of commonly used noninvasive respiratory support strategies have considerable effect on diaphragmatic contractile function which can be evaluated using sonographic diaphragm activity parameters. OBJECTIVE: To compare the magnitude of respiratory workload decreased as assessed by thickening fraction of the diaphragm and longitudinal diaphragmatic strain while using high-flow nasal cannula (HFNC) and noninvasive ventilation (NIV) modes [nasal intermittent positive pressure ventilation (NIPPV) and bilevel positive airway pressure (BiPAP)] in pediatric patients after cardiothoracic surgery...

BACKGROUND: Preterm infants (born before 37 weeks' gestation) are often unable to co-ordinate sucking, swallowing, and breathing for oral feeding because of their immaturity. In such cases, initial nutrition is provided by orogastric or nasogastric tube feeding. Feeding intolerance is common and can delay attainment of full enteral and sucking feeds, prolonging the need for nutritional support and the hospital stay. Smell and taste play an important role in the activation of physiological pre-absorptive processes that contribute to food digestion and absorption...

Acute carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning may cause liver damage and liver dysfunction. Therefore, in this study, we aimed to compare the efficiency of normobaric (NBO) and high flow nasal cannula oxygen (HFNCO) treatments on liver injury. For that purpose, twenty-eight male Wistar albino rats were divided into four groups (Control, CO, CO + NBO, CO + HFNCO). The control group was allowed to breath room air for 30 min. Acute CO poisoning in CO, CO + NBO, CO + HFNCO was induced by CO exposure for 30 min...

The study presented in this Research Communication aimed to investigate the relationship between physiological responses, body surface temperature and shade-seeking behaviour in Nili Ravi dairy buffaloes during summer months. We enrolled 60 buffaloes, and each animal was observed for three consecutive days starting before sunrise until they moved towards the shade structures. A repeated measures ANOVA was employed to assess the changes in physiological parameters and body surface temperature between the early morning and the occurrence of shade-seeking behaviour...

KEY CLINICAL MESSAGE: Gastric adenocarcinoma can present uncommonly. This emphasizes the need for intensified vigilance in the absence of typical gastrointestinal symptoms, particularly in areas where infectious diseases are common. ABSTRACT: Gastric adenocarcinoma, a common advanced-age global malignancy is typically associated with abdominal symptoms. However, atypical presentations such as back pain and respiratory distress particularly in younger patients represent diagnostic challenges...

Preeclampsia is a rare complication of pregnancy and can cause maternal death. This case report serves to increase awareness of the range and severity of symptoms in postpartum preeclampsia and highlights a stepwise approach to provide prompt management. The cause of preeclampsia is not fully understood but is correlated with many placental and maternal factors. Preeclampsia typically resolves with delivery, and it is uncommon to have symptoms in the postpartum period. Due to the rarity of the disease, it is not typically at the top of a differential list for postpartum women...

Background Of all fatalities occurring globally each year caused by noncommunicable diseases, obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) and obesity are associated with an increased risk of sudden death and cardiovascular mortality. Metabolic syndrome and its comorbidities are linked to OSA. The three essential elements of the metabolic syndrome are improper lipid metabolism, hypertension, and insulin resistance. The effect of continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) on metabolic syndrome elements and related symptoms and whether CPAP therapy helps reverse the syndrome was studied...

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Spontaneous intracranial hypotension (SIH) from CSF leak commonly produces headache. It also may produce sagging brain syndrome (SBS), often with neurocognitive symptoms indistinguishable from behavioral-variant frontotemporal dementia (bvFTD). The authors describe a new clinical sign that appears to be pathognomonic of SBS. METHODS: We reviewed medical records and brain imaging in patients seen at our 2 centers who presented with SIH, SBS, and bvFTD symptoms...

BACKGROUND: Magnetic resonance elastography (MRE) is a non-invasive method to measure the viscoelastic properties of tissue and has been applied in multiple abdominal organs. However, abdominal MRE suffers from detrimental breathing motion causing misalignment of structures between repeated acquisitions for different MRE dimensions (e.g., motion encoding directions and wave phase offsets). This study investigated motion correction strategies to resolve all breathing motion on sagittal free-breathing MRE acquisitions in a phantom, in healthy volunteers and showed feasibility in patients...

BACKGROUND: Several publications have examined diaphragmatic ultrasound using two-dimensional (2D) parameters in the context of weaning from mechanical ventilation (MV) and extubation. However, the studied cohorts had rather short duration of ventilation. Examinations on patients with prolonged weaning after long-term ventilation were missing. It was the aim of this study to assess of the diaphragm and peripheral musculature of patients undergoing prolonged weaning creating a chronological sequence of ultrasonic parameters during the course of weaning...

BACKGROUND: Although thyroid tumors with tracheal stenosis are occasionally encountered, severe tracheal stenosis caused by benign thyroid tumors is rare. We herein describe a case in which a silicone tracheal stent was placed for severe tracheal stenosis induced by a giant goiter due to Graves' disease. CASE DESCRIPTION: A 93-year-old woman had been receiving thiamazole treatment for Graves' disease with a thyroid goiter for 32 years. Infantile colic is excessive crying for no apparent reason in an otherwise healthy infant. Although its physiopathology is not completely understood, therapies usually target gastrointestinal symptoms. This systematic review of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) analyzes the efficacy of lactase supplementation in infantile colic. PubMed, Embase, and Cochrane were searched for RCTs evaluating lactase supplementation in infants up to 6 months old with infantile colic. Out of six RCTs including 394 patients, three reported a significantly shorter crying time in the lactase group than in the placebo group, while the other three found no significant difference between groups...

Respiratory symptoms are ubiquitous and impair health-related quality of life in people with respiratory disease. This European Respiratory Society (ERS) task force aimed to provide recommendations for symptomatic treatment in people with serious respiratory illness. The ERS task force comprised 16 members, including representatives of people with serious respiratory illness and informal caregivers. Seven questions were formulated, six in the "Population, Intervention, Comparison, Outcome" (PICO) format, which were addressed with full systematic reviews and evidence assessed using Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development and Evaluation (GRADE)...
