People with (a history of) hepatitis C have concerns about privacy and the confidentiality of their health information. This is often due to the association between hepatitis C and injecting drug use and related stigma. In Australia, recent data breaches at a major private health insurer and legislative reforms to increase access to electronic health records have heightened these concerns. Drawing from interviews with people with lived experience of hepatitis C and stakeholders working in this area, this article explores the experiences and concerns of people with (a history of) hepatitis C in relation to the sharing of their health records...

Improved software for processing medical images has inspired tremendous interest in modern medicine in recent years. Modern healthcare equipment generates huge amounts of data, such as scanned medical images and computerized patient information, which must be secured for future use. Diversity in the healthcare industry, namely in the form of medical data, is one of the largest challenges for researchers. Cloud environment and the Block chain technology have both demonstrated their own use. The purpose of this study is to combine both technologies for safe and secure transaction...

AIM: To deepen our understanding of why nurses decide to leave their occupation instead of changing jobs, we examined the antecedents that led to this decision through the theoretical lens of psychological contract breach. DESIGN: A qualitative design with semi-structured interviews. METHODS: We collected 28 interviewees from our social networks and a social media platform. We included professional nurses who had decided to leave or had left the occupation...

BACKGROUND: Invasive meningococcal disease (IMD), including sepsis and meningitis, can develop when Neisseria meningitidis bacteria breach the barrier and gain access to the circulation. While IMD is a rare outcome of bacterial exposure, colonization of the oropharynx is present in approximately 10% of the human population. This asymptomatic carriage can be long or short term, and it is unknown which determining factors regulate bacterial colonization. Despite descriptions of many bacterial virulence factors and recent advances in detailed genetic identification and characterization of bacteria, the factors mediating invasion and disease vs...

The Doce River Basin (DRB) suffers with the adverse impacts of mining activities, due to its high level of urbanization and numerous industrial operations. In this study, we present novel insights into contaminant flow dynamics, seasonal variations, and the primary factors driving concentration levels within the region. We conducted an extensive analysis using a database sourced from the literature, which contained data on the contamination of arsenic (As) and lead (Pb) in the Doce River. Our primary aim was to investigate the patterns of As and Pb flow throughout the entire basin, their response to seasonal fluctuations, and the key parameters influencing their concentration levels...

Predictive modeling is a central technique in neuroimaging to identify brain-behavior relationships and test their generalizability to unseen data. However, data leakage undermines the validity of predictive models by breaching the separation between training and test data. Leakage is always an incorrect practice but still pervasive in machine learning. Understanding its effects on neuroimaging predictive models can inform how leakage affects existing literature. Here, we investigate the effects of five forms of leakage-involving feature selection, covariate correction, and dependence between subjects-on functional and structural connectome-based machine learning models across four datasets and three phenotypes...

In 2019 an independent Tribunal found the Government had breached Te Tiriti o Waitangi by "failing to design and administer the current primary health care system to actively address persistent Māori health inequities". Many Māori (44%) have unmet needs for primary care. Seven models of primary care were identified by the funders and the research team, including Māori-owned practices...

The Crumbs homolog 1 (CRB1) gene is associated with retinal degeneration, most commonly Leber congenital amaurosis (LCA) and retinitis pigmentosa (RP). Here, we demonstrate that murine retinas bearing the Rd8 mutation of Crb1 are characterized by the presence of intralesional bacteria. While normal CRB1 expression was enriched in the apical junctional complexes of retinal pigment epithelium and colonic enterocytes, Crb1 mutations dampened its expression at both sites. Consequent impairment of the outer blood retinal barrier and colonic intestinal epithelial barrier in Rd8 mice led to the translocation of intestinal bacteria from the lower gastrointestinal (GI) tract to the retina, resulting in secondary retinal degeneration...

However, there is limited research on the distinct vulnerabilities and risks underlying the causes of death in this population. In this retrospective cohort study, we examined the individual and criminal justice-related factors associated with different causes of death. Factors were assessed in relation to the type of supervision, distinguishing between those under post-custodial release and those serving a community sentence...

In modern times, various user authentication technologies, including strong security features based on ownership, such as certificates and security cards, have been introduced. Nevertheless, password-based authentication technology is currently mainly used due to its convenience of use and ease of implementation. However, according to Verizon's "2022 Data Breach Investigations Report", among all security incidents, security incidents caused by password exposures accounted for 82%...

INTRODUCTION: Healthcare reorientation aims for health services focused not exclusively on diseases but also on prevention and health promotion. The implementation depends strongly on professionals' willingness to actively participate in the reorientation. An effective strategy to boost reorientation is to reorient education and role definition of future professionals. This paper examines whether photovoice can be a suitable method to i) increase future health professionals' awareness of users' needs and expectations; and ii) enable a process of critical reflection on role definition and health services organisation...

In recent years, the use of intraoperative three-dimensional (3D) imaging has become available with the Gertzbein-Robbins system (GRS) to assess PS breach and positioning confirmation. The aim is to determine if 2D imaging is sufficient to assess PS position in comparison to advanced 3D imaging.Retrospective review of prospectively collected data from 204 consecutive adult patients who underwent posterior thoracic and lumbar instrumented fusion for degenerative spinal surgery by a single surgeon (2019-2022)...

The stress-strain curve of biological soft tissues helps characterize their mechanical behavior. The yield point on this curve is when a specimen breaches its elastic range due to irreversible microstructural damage. The yield point is easily found using the offset yield method in traditional engineering materials. However, correctly identifying the yield point in soft tissues can be subjective due to its nonlinear material behavior. The typical method for yield point identification is visual inspection, which is investigator-dependent and does not lend itself to automation of the analysis pipeline...

The high-level nuclear waste, HLW, from Swedish and Finnish reactors will be deposited in crystalline rock at depths around 500 m. The waste is enclosed in steel canisters protected against corrosion by a 5 cm thick copper shell, which ensures a lifetime far longer than 100 000 years. Should some canister be breached any leaking nuclides will have decayed to so low activity that even if they reached the biosphere, they would cause minimal risk to humans. The cost of the copper is significant. The dismantling of the nuclear reactors, with induced activity must also be disposed of and this waste volume is much larger than that of the HLW, which makes it impossible to protect it in the same way...
