BACKGROUND: Carrying out dialysis at home brings non-medical factors, including social support, or caretaker relationship, and internal features relevant to personality into the forefront. In this study, we aimed to explore the relationship between coping strategies of patients undergoing continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis (CAPD) and health outcomes. METHODS: Our post-hoc analysis was based on one previous randomized controlled trial that enrolled 150 incident patients who started CAPD from December 2010 to June 2016...

Up to 80% of women living with chronic kidney disease (CKD) experience sexual dysfunction, though its link with sexual activity and sexual satisfaction is not well understood. Among older women with CKD treated with hemodialysis, the majority report sexual inactivity, though few describe sexual difficulty and most report high sexual satisfaction. Whether this applies to reproductive-aged females living with CKD is yet unknown. This study aimed to assess the sexual activity, function, and satisfaction of reproductive-aged females living with CKD...

Contraception, pregnancy and fertility are seldom discussed with women receiving dialysis and the medical staff of dialysis centres. Since the majority of women on dialysis are past childbearing age, these themes are not always given proper consideration and this category of patients may be missing important information. Young women of childbearing age who are on dialysis frequently experience sexual dysfunction and hormonal disorders of the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis. In addition, dialysis often has a relevant psychological impact and affects the person's social role...

BACKGROUND: Glycemic control is crucial in peritoneal dialysis (PD) patients with diabetes. Although fasting blood glucose (FBG) is the most commonly used index to measure blood glucose levels, there is currently no evidence supporting the association between FBG level and mortality risk in PD patients. METHODS: A total of 3548 diabetic PD patients between 2002 and 2018 were enrolled from the National Health Insurance Service database of Korea. We investigated the association between FBG levels and the risk of all-cause and cause-specific mortality...

One of the most common causes of peritoneal dialysis withdrawal is ultrafiltration failure which is characterized by peritoneal membrane thickening and fibrosis. Although previous studies have demonstrated the inhibitory effect of p38 MAPK inhibitors on peritoneal fibrosis in mice, it was unclear which specific cells contribute to peritoneal fibrosis. To investigate the role of p38 MAPK in peritoneal fibrosis more precisely, we examined the expression of p38 MAPK in human peritoneum and generated systemic inducible p38 MAPK knockout mice and macrophage-specific p38 MAPK knockout mice...

A 57-year-old man was diagnosed with peritoneal dialysis (PD)-associated peritonitis 2 months after surgery for tunnel infection (TI) caused by Mycobacteroides abscessus (M. abscessus). The patient was treated with multiple antibiotics, and the cell count in the PD effluent decreased. However, the patient experienced abdominal pain and developed hiccups. Computed tomography revealed an encapsulated fluid collection, indicating intra-abdominal abscess (IAA) formation. Percutaneous drainage was performed to treat IAA, and the catheter was removed...

BACKGROUND: Peritoneal dialysis (PD) is a home-based kidney replacement therapy (KRT) performed in people with kidney failure. PD can be performed by manual filling and draining of the abdominal cavity, i.e. continuous ambulatory PD (CAPD), or using a device connected to the PD catheter that is programmed to perform PD exchanges, i.e. automated PD (APD). APD is considered to have several advantages over CAPD, such as a lower incidence of peritonitis, fewer mechanical complications, and greater psychosocial acceptability...

Tumoral calcinosis (TC) is a rare condition characterized by dystrophic calcinosis. TC in end stage kidney disease is associated with severe hyperparathyroidism. It is radiologically characterized by multilobulated cystic calcifications in periarticular regions without erosive arthropathy or osseus destruction. Secondary TC may necessitate medical or surgical parathyroidectomy for symptom control.

BACKGROUND: Kidney diseases are a major global health problem affecting millions of people. Despite this, there is as yet no effective drug therapy improving outcome in patients with renal disease. The aim of this study was to examine the nephroprotective effect of α-lipoic acid (ALA) in vitro and to examine the effect of ALA administered in vivo on the production of reactive sulfur species (RSS), including hydrogen sulfide (H2S) and compounds containing sulfane sulfur. METHODS: The effect of ALA was studied in vitro by determining the viability of human embryonic kidney cells (HEK293) in normoxic and hypoxic conditions as well as in vivo in two groups of chronic kidney disease (CKD) patients: non-dialyzed (ND) and undergoing continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis (PD) after 30 days of ALA supplementation...
