I re-examined data for relative growth by the heart in four species of mammal to reconcile divergent reports that appear in the literature. Raw data for heart and body mass for Horro sheep, humans, gray kangaroos, and tammar wallabies were studied by linear and nonlinear regression, thereby enabling me to avoid the confounding effects of logarithmic transformation and to evaluate multiple statistical models for describing pattern in each set of observations. My analyses indicate that relative growth by the heart is monophasic in all four species and either isometric or near isometric on the arithmetic scale...

We report the preparation of enantiomerically pure constrained geometry complexes ( cgc ) of the rare-earth metals bearing a pentadienyl moiety (pdl) derived from the natural product (1 R )-(-)-myrtenal. The potassium salt 1 , [Kpdl*], was treated with ClSiMe 2 NH t Bu, and the resulting pentadiene 2 was deprotonated with the Schlosser -type base KO t Pen/ n -BuLi ( t Pen = CMe 2 (CH 2 Me)) to yield the dipotassium salt [K 2 (pdl*SiMe 2 N t Bu)] ( 3 ). However, 3 rearranges in THF solution to its isomer 3' by a 1,3-H shift, which elongates the bridge between the pdl and SiMe 2 N t Bu moieties by one CH 2 unit...

Eleven St. Croix ewes (46.9 ± 1.59 kg BW and 3.6 ± 0.67 yr age) were used in a crossover design to evaluate effects of restricted drinking water availability on intake of a 50% concentrate diet, digestion, and energy utilization. After 2 wk to determine ad libitum water consumption, there were two 4-wk periods, with measures in metabolism cages during wk 4. One treatment was water offered at the ad libitum level (CONT) and the other entailed a 25% reduction in wk 1 and 50% thereafter (REST). Although, some water was refused in wk 4, with intake of 2556 and 1707 g/day for CONT and REST, respectively (SEM=170...

The optical anisotropy of the Sb2 Se3 crystals was investigated at 300 and 11 K. Excitonic features of four excitons (A, B, C, and D) were observed in the optical spectra of the Sb2 Se3 single crystals and in the photoelectric spectra of the Me-Sb2 Se3 structures. The exciton parameters, such as the ground ( n = 1) and excited ( n = 2) state positions and the binding energy (Ry), were determined. The effective mass of the electrons at the bottom of the conduction band ( m c * = 0.67 m 0 ) as well as the holes at the four top valence bands ( m v1 * = 3...

Zea mays and Miscanthus × giganteus use NADP-ME subtype C4 photosynthesis and are important food and biomass crops, respectively. Both crops are grown in dense stands where shaded leaves can contribute a significant proportion of overall canopy productivity. This is because shaded leaves, despite intercepting little light, typically process light energy very efficiently for photosynthesis, when compared to light-saturated leaves at the top of the canopy. However, an apparently maladaptive loss in photosynthetic light-use efficiency as leaves become shaded has been shown to reduce productivity in these two species...

Cerebral ischemia is a severe, acute condition, normally caused by cerebrovascular disease, and results in high rates of disability, and death. Phagoptosis is a newly recognized form of cell death caused by phagocytosis of viable cells, and has been reported to contribute to neuronal loss in brain tissue after ischemic stroke. Previous data indicated that exposure of phosphatidylserine to viable neurons could induce microglial phagocytosis of such neurons. Phosphatidylserine can be reversibly exposed to viable cells as a result of a calcium-activated phospholipid scramblase named TMEM16F...

BACKGROUND: The Affordable Care Act's Medicaid expansions (ME) increased insurance coverage for low-income Americans, among whom unmet need for mental health care is high. Empirical evidence regarding the impact of expanding insurance coverage on use of mental health services among low income and minority populations is lacking. METHODS: Data on mental health service use collected between 2007 and 2015 by the Medical Expenditures Panel Survey from nationally representative cross-sectional samples of low income (income<138% of the federal poverty line) adults were analyzed...

OBJECTIVES: 'Undetectable equals Untransmittable' (U=U) is an empowering message that may enable people living with HIV (PLHIV) to reach and maintain undetectability. We estimated the percentage of PLHIV who ever discussed U=U with their main HIV care provider, and measured associations with health-related outcomes. Secondarily, we evaluated whether the impact of the U=U message varied between those who heard it from their healthcare provider (HCP) vs from elsewhere. METHODS: Data were from the 25-country 2019 Positive Perspectives Survey of PLHIV on treatment (n=2389)...

Myocardial elastography (ME) is an ultrasound-based strain imaging method that aims to determine the degree of ischemia or infarction as a result of the change in the elastic properties of the myocardium. A survival canine model (n = 11) was employed to investigate the ability of ME to image myocardial infarction formation and recovery. Infarcts were generated by ligation of the left anterior descending coronary artery. Canines were survived and imaged for 4 days (n = 7) or 4 weeks (n = 4), allowing sufficient time for recovery via collateral perfusion...

Poly(dimethylosiloxane) (PDMS) cross-linked by metal-ligand coordination has a potential functionality for electronic devices applications. In this work, the molecular dynamics of bipyridine (bpy)-PDMS-MeCl2 (Me: Mn2+ , Fe2+ , Ni2+ , and Zn2+ ) are investigated by means of broadband dielectric spectroscopy and supported by differential scanning calorimetry and density functional theory calculations. The study of molecular motions covered a broad range of temperatures and frequencies and was performed for the first time for metal-ligand cross-linked PDMS...

Protein arginine phosphorylation (pArg) is a relatively novel posttranslational modification. Protein arginine phosphatase YwlE negatively regulates arginine phosphorylation and consequently induces the expression of stress-response genes that are crucial for bacterial stress tolerance and pathogenic homolog Staphylococcus aureus virulence. However, little is known about the factors that affect the enzymatic activity of YwlE with the exception of the effect of oxidative stress. Herein, based on the hydrolysis of the chromogenic substrate p-nitrophenyl phosphate (pNPP) by YwlE, we investigate the role of metal cations and oxyanions in the regulation of YwlE activity...
