Purpose: To evaluate the effectiveness and safety of Ologen implantation versus conjunctival autograft transplantation for primary pterygium. Methods: A retrospective case-series analysis. Thirty-one eyes of 29 patients were included in the Ologen group and 42 eyes of 35 patients in the autograft group. The patients were followed up for 1 year and evaluated for slit-lamp biomicroscopy, intraocular pressure, and adverse events. Recurrence rate, complications, and final appearance of the cases were evaluated prospectively...

The squamous cell carcinoma of the conjunctiva is a neoplasia of the ocular surface that may present with different macroscopic patterns. We present the case of a 75-year-old man that comes presenting this tumor for a long time, involving in an important way its vision.

Ocular drug delivery is still a challenge for researchers in the field of pharmaceutical technology due to anatomical and physiological eye characteristics. The tissue barriers (such as cornea, conjunctiva, blood aqueous barrier, and blood-retinal barrier) limit the access of drugs to their targets. Taking into account the short retention time in the precorneal area of classical ocular dosage forms (e.g. solutions, suspensions or ointments) which are rapidly eliminated by tears and eyelid movement, only less than five percent of the administered drug attains intraocular structures...

Primary acquired melanosis (PAM) is an acquired pigmentation of the conjunctival epithelium, a preinvasive pigmented lesion. When it is associated with cellular atypia it can lead to the developement of melanoma. We report a case report of malignant melanoma of the conjuntiva, which arrised from the conjuntival PAM. The disease was too extensive for ocular conservation, therefore exenteration was performed. This case highlights the need for regular follow-up of patients with melanocytic lesions of the ocular adnexa, and particular attention to the surgical technique, and careful follow-up to detect further disease activity...

It has been reported that chymase activity was increased in allergic conjunctivitis patients and this activity was correlated with the severity of the disease. However, the precise roles of chymase in allergic conjunctivitis are unclear, and whether chymase inhibitors are effective for allergic conjunctivitis has not been reported even in experimental animal models. In this study, the roles of chymase in the pathogenesis were evaluated using a selective chymase inhibitor, ONO-WH-236, in a guinea pig model of allergic conjunctivitis induced by cedar pollen...

BACKGROUND: Ichthyosis is an infrequent clinical entity worldwide (1:300,000 births). When diagnosed in a newborn, two forms can be identified: collodion baby and its most severe form, harlequin fetus or maligna keratoma. In both cases, clinical manifestations are thick and hard skin with deep splits. The splits are more prominent in the flexion areas. CASE: We report a case of a 4- day-old baby who was referred to JNMC Eye OPD by the Pediatric Department of the JNMC...

Thyroid associated ophthalmopathy is an uncommon disease, characterized by a diffuse inflammation of the orbit in a bilateral and asymmetric pattern, causing proptosis and swelling of the eyelids and conjuntiva. In 90% of the patients it is associated with Graves' disease, however it may occur with hipothyroidism or even without thyroid disease. During its course spontaneous remission or exacerbations are common, evolving independently from the thyroid disease, most often without serious complications for the patient, being blindness the worse of them, in 1% of the cases...

BACKGROUND: To evaluate the safety and efficacy of sub-Tenon anesthesia for segmental scleral buckling. METHODS: Thirty-two patients diagnosed with rhegmatogenous retinal detachment were treated with segmental scleral buckling under sub-Tenon anesthesia. After topical anesthesia, a buttonhole was made through the conjuntiva and Tenon's capsule 4 mm posterior to the limbus. Four milliliters of anesthetic solution was then delivered into the posterior sub-Tenon space using a blunt cannula...

PURPOSE: Endoscopy is a useful technique that may be applied to study orbital pathology because it is safe. In this paper we describe the surgical technique using endoscopy for orbital foreign body extraction. METHODS: In an experimental model in the dog we inserted a spheric metallic foreign body into the intraconal portion of the orbit. After general anesthesia we performed a 2 mm. peritomy in the conjuntiva. Then we introduced the optic system connected to a TV monitor...

PURPOSE: The host response to allergens appears to be regulated by specific patterns of local cytokine production. More than 20,000 conjunctival superficial cells were collected with a special brush, a smaller version of the Cytobrush used in cervical cytology, from the upper palpebral conjuntiva. METHODS: Samples were obtained by cytology brush from seven patients with allergic conjunctivitis and from seven healthy volunteers. Giemsa staining, immunocytochemistry, and flow cytometric analysis were performed...

Ocular melanoma is the most common malignant tumor of the eye and accounts for 70 to 80 percent of all extracutaneous melanomas. Its biologic behavior differs from that of its cutaneous counterpart. To elucidate this, 62 patients with histologically proven melanoma of eye (58 uveal tract and 4 conjuntiva) at Roswell Park Memorial Institute from 1945 to 1977 were studied. The prominent contradistinctions from other head and neck melanomas were (1) a very high percentage of patients had either locally advanced or systemic disease at diagnosis, although the eye is the most sensitive organ; (2) regional lymph node involvement was absent even in the late stages of disease; (3) hematogenous spread involved single organs, most commonly the liver and the lung; (4) local recurrence was rare; (5) most recurrences occurred evenly in first 10 years after treatment; (6) regional resection, chemotherapy or both are advocated for distant metastases since they are confined to a single organ and are amenable to it; and (7) despite hematogenous spread and advanced disease at diagnosis, the overall prognosis of ocular melanoma is comparable to that of cutaneous melanoma...

The authors present a case of multiple sebaceous naevi associated with severe mental retardation and ocular lesions in a six month-old female. Several elevated yellowish lesions were present in the skin of the face and an extensive atrophic lesion was observed in the scalp. Histopathological examination of the elevated yellowish plaque disclosed hyperplasia of mature sebaceous glands. In the linear lesion it was observed hyperplasia of hypotrophic sebaceous glands. Otherwise in the atrophic lesion of the scalp atrophy of the dermis associated with marked hypoplasia of the skin appendages was observed...

A new bovine red blood cell (RBC) test is presented as a biological in vitro assay for rapid assessment of the membrane and protein damaging effects of tensides. The system uses the hemoglobin released during RBC damage as an indicator to determine quantitatively the concentration at which the tensioactive agents affect and disrupt the plasma membrane. The spectrophotometric assay also considers the denaturation of hemoglobin caused by high concentrations of the tensides. Thus besides the halfmaximal concentrations to cause hemolysis (H50), a denaturation index (DI in %) can be determined for each test agent...

The authors report on their own treatment results with the drug carrier Ocusert (Federal Rep. of Germany: Chemie Grunenthal). Furthermore the effect on the IOP and the compatibility including the accomodative myopia is discussed. The effect on IOP was approximately equal to Pilocarpine 2% four times daily. The accommodation myopia was significanly less than using Pilocarpin drops. A short time after insertion the conjuntiva was irritated but the irritation faded within a short time.
