In this theoretical article, I examine various conceptions of focused listening-including those held by specific First Nations communities-to determine how each conception might offer insights for listening while conducting cross-cultural music education research. First, I discuss the notion of "Big Ears," as it is understood by the jazz community. Then, I turn to scholars from various First Nations in British Columbia to learn about their conceptions of listening. I outline decolonial listening strategies as proposed by Indigenous Arts scholar Dylan Robinson, before learning about the role of listening from a settler-Canadian who formally Witnessed the testimonies of Indigenous residential school survivors over a period of years while working for the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada...

BACKGROUND: C2 fractures can be classified differently when dens, pedicles or body are injured. With regards to the best management of Type-II Anderson-D'Alonzo fractures, Hangman's fractures of pedicles and C2 body fractures are more debatable. However, vertebral pedicle and/or articular screw and dorsal wiring are the most common surgical posterior approaches opted for. Compared to the screw technique, dorsal wiring provides certain benefits such as a lower risk of vertebral artery injury, no need for navigation, less lateral dissection of the paraspinal muscles, shorter surgery time and lower medical costs...

The generation of complex movements such as dance might be possible due to the utilization of movement building blocks, i.e., movement primitives. However, it is largely unexplored how the temporal structure of a movement sequence and the recruitment of these primitives change with experience. Therefore, we obtained a representation of primitives with the temporal movement primitive model from the motion capture data of dancers with varying experience, both for improvised and choreographed movements (elements from contemporary/modern/jazz) with different qualitative expressions...

Due to situational fluidity and intrinsic uncertainty of emergency response, there needs to be a fast vehicle routing algorithm that meets the constraints of the situation, thus the receiving-staging-storing-distributing (RSSD) algorithm was developed. Benchmarking the quality of this satisficing algorithm is important to understand the consequences of not engaging with the NP-Hard task of vehicle routing problem. This benchmarking will inform whether the RSSD algorithm is producing acceptable and consistent solutions to be used in decision support systems for emergency response planning...

The capacity of animals to respond to hazardous stimuli in their surroundings is crucial for their survival. In mammals, complex evaluations of the environment require large numbers and different subtypes of neurons. The nematode C. elegans avoids hazardous chemicals they encounter by reversing their direction of movement. How does the worms' compact nervous system process the spatial information and direct motion change? We show here that a single interneuron, AVA, receives glutamatergic excitatory and inhibitory signals from head and tail sensory neurons, respectively...

INTRODUCTION: Music students in higher education experience health-related challenges linked to practice and performance, while an understanding of these challenges and access to resources to deal with them are required to promote the students´ health. Health literacy and health education are integral parts of health promotion and resources for health, which encompasses health-related knowledge and competence aiming to improve health. The aim of this study was to explore Norwegian music students' perceptions and experiences of resources and challenges for health and address the following research question: What health-related challenges do music students in higher music education meet, and what health promoting resources do they need and use to deal with these challenges and promote their health? METHODS: We conducted a qualitative study including three focus group interviews with 13 music students aged between 19 and 31 years studying classical, folk, jazz or rhythmic genres from five different music departments in Norwegian universities...

This paper presents novel preliminary research that investigates the relationship between the flow of a group of jazz musicians, quantified through multi-person pose synchronization, and their collective emotions. We have developed a real-time software to calculate the physical synchronicity of team members by tracking the difference in arm, leg, and head movements using Lightweight OpenPose. We employ facial expression recognition to evaluate the musicians' collective emotions. Through correlation and regression analysis, we establish that higher levels of synchronized body and head movements correspond to lower levels of disgust, anger, sadness, and higher levels of joy among the musicians...

In the past 2 decades, research on atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease has uncovered inflammation to be a key driver of the pathophysiological process. A pressing need therefore exists to quantitatively and longitudinally probe inflammation, in preclinical models and in cardiovascular disease patients, ideally using non-invasive methods and at multiple levels. Here, we developed and employed in vivo multiparametric imaging approaches to investigate the immune response following myocardial infarction. The myocardial infarction models encompassed either transient or permanent left anterior descending coronary artery occlusion in C57BL/6 and Apoe-/- mice...

Succession is a fundamental concept in ecology because it indicates how species populations, communities, and ecosystems change over time on new substrate or after a disturbance. A mechanistic understanding of succession is needed to predict how ecosystems will respond to land-use change and to design effective ecosystem restoration strategies. Yet, despite a century of conceptual advances a comprehensive successional theory is lacking. Here we provide an overview of 19 successional theories ('models') and their key points, group them based on conceptual similarity, explain conceptual development in successional ideas and provide suggestions how to move forward...

Immunoparalysis is a compensatory and persistent anti-inflammatory response to trauma, sepsis or another serious insult, which increases the risk of opportunistic infections, morbidity and mortality. Here, we show that in cultured primary human monocytes, interleukin-4 (IL4) inhibits acute inflammation, while simultaneously inducing a long-lasting innate immune memory named trained immunity. To take advantage of this paradoxical IL4 feature in vivo, we developed a fusion protein of apolipoprotein A1 (apoA1) and IL4, which integrates into a lipid nanoparticle...

BACKGROUND: HER2 is overexpressed or amplified in a subset of biliary tract cancer. BACKGROUND: CPX-351, an encapsulated form of cytarabine and daunorubicin, has shown greater efficacy than the classic 3 + 7 treatment administration in secondary acute myeloid leukaemia. In comparison to the general population, lung cancer patients are more likely to suffer from severe Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) and associated mortality. Considering this increased risk, and in order to prevent symptoms and severe disease, patients with lung cancer have been prioritized for COVID-19 vaccination primary and booster doses. Despite this, the pivotal clinical trials did not include these patients, which leaves open questions regarding vaccine efficacy and humoral immune response. This review outlines the findings of recent investigations into the humoral responses of lung cancer patients to COVID-19 vaccination, particularly the primary doses and first boost...
