BACKGROUND: Device-associated healthcare-acquired infections (DA-HAI) pose a threat to patient safety, particularly in the intensive care unit (ICU). We report the results of the International Infection Control Consortium (INICC) study conducted in Turkey from August 2003 through October 2012. METHODS: A DA-HAI surveillance study in 63 adult, paediatric ICUs and neonatal ICUs (NICUs) from 29 hospitals, in 19 cities using the methods and definitions of the U.S. NHSN and INICC methods...

Background: Pazopanib (PZP) may induce prolonged cardiac repolarization and proarrhythmic effects, similarly to other tyrosine kinase inhibitors. Objectives: To demonstrate PZP-induced prolonged cardiac repolarization and proarrhythmic electrophysiological effects and to investigate possible preventive effects of metoprolol and diltiazem on ECG changes (prolonged QT) in an experimental rat model. Methods: Twenty-four Sprague-Dawley adult male rats were randomly assigned to 4 groups (n = 6). The first group (normal group) received 4 mL of tap water and the other groups received 100 mg/kg of PZP (Votrient® tablet) perorally, via orogastric tubes...

BACKGROUND: Elevated gamma-glutamyl transferase (GGT) levels have been demonstrated to be associated with poor prognoses in patients with coronary artery disease. Coronary computed tomography angiography (CCTA) is a noninvasive imaging modality that may differentiate the structure of coronary plaques. Elevated plaque burdens and noncalcified plaques, detected by CCTA, are important predictors of atherosclerosis in young adults. HYPOTHESIS: The present study investigated the possible relationship between GGT levels and coronary plaque burdens/structures in young adults with coronary atherosclerosis...

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to assess subclinical left (LV) and right ventricular (RV) dysfunction novel load-independent isovolumic myocardial acceleration (IVA) derived from tissue Doppler imaging (TDI) in patient with metabolic syndrome (MetS). METHODS: This study had an observational case-control design. The study included 133 subjects which were divided into two groups: 75 patients with MetS and 58 controls without MetS. MetS was defined by the presence of ≥3 criteria according to ATP-NCEP III guidelines...

The maintenance of energetic homeostasis in the face of limited available nutrients is a complex problem faced by all organisms. One important mechanism to maintain energetic homeostasis involves the activation of the energy sensor AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK). AMPK is a cell-autonomous energy sensor that is highly sensitive to and regulated by the ATP to ADP and ATP to AMP ratios. However, the genetic analysis of AMPK signaling in vertebrates has been complicated by the existence of multiple redundant AMPK subunits...

The aim of this study is to investigate the effect of low-intensity static magnetic fields (SMFs) on invertase activity and growth on different newly identified molds. The most positive effect of SMFs on invertase activity and growth was observed for Aspergillus niger OZ-3. The submerged production of invertase was performed with the spores obtained at the different exposure times (120, 144, 168, and 196 hr) and magnetic field intensities (0.45, 3, 5, 7, and 9 mT). The normal magnetic field of the laboratory was assayed as 0...

OBJECTIVE: To determine the subclinical effects of isolated obesity and its duration on cardiac function by using routine echocardiography and tissue Doppler myocardial strain rate. METHODS: Forty-nine subjects were enrolled in this study; 29 with isolated obesity defined as a body mass index > or = 30 kg/m(2) with no other cardiovascular comorbidities, and 20 nonobese controls. All subjects underwent two-dimensional and Doppler echocardiography including tissue Doppler imaging and myocardial strain rate...

Condyloma acuminatum is located in the perianal region, anal canal, vagina and the perineum. It is caused by human papillomavirus types 6 and 11. A 18 year-old man was admitted to the clinic because of a perianal mass. On examination of the patient's perianal area and inside the anal canal, a mass was found, which was nearly 8 x 8 cm in size. We could not obtain any information about venereal transmission. The mass was totally excised and the defect was reconstructed with a bilateral V-Y advancement flap. This technique has been used for sacrococcygeal, ischial and other defects but rarely used for condyloma acuminatum...

AIMS: The aim of this study was to evaluate the relationship between homocysteine levels and the development of left ventricular thrombus in acute anterior myocardial infarction patients directed to thrombolytic therapy. METHODS AND RESULTS: Seventy-nine patients presenting with ST elevated acute anterior myocardial infarction and treated with thrombolytic agent, t-PA, were included in the study. Two-dimensional echocardiography was used to divide patients into 2 groups according to the presence (n = 14) or absence (n = 65) of thrombus in the left ventricle following myocardial infarction...

The objective is to investigate the effect of obesity and hepatosteatosis on the Doppler waveform pattern of the hepatic veins. B-mode and duplex Doppler sonography of the liver and the right hepatic vein was performed in 102 obese subjects and 84 healthy volunteers. The severity of fatty infiltration was graded as mild, moderate and severe. The flow pattern of the right hepatic vein was classified as triphasic, biphasic and monophasic. The Doppler flow pattern in the right hepatic vein was triphasic in 56 (55%), biphasic in 27 (26%) and monophasic in 19 (19%) obese patients, whereas it was triphasic in 83 (99%) and biphasic in 1 (1%) control subject, achieving a statistical significance (Mann-Whitney U-test, P<0...

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: The aim of this study was to assess management strategies for patients with nipple discharge (ND). PATIENTS AND METHODS: The records of 13,443 women with breast-related complaints who were examined by the same surgeon between 1 January 1960 and 31 December 2000 were retrospectively assessed. Patients with ND were grouped according to whether they had had a spontaneous or provoked discharge. The parameters investigated in each group were age, physical findings, number of pregnancies, duration of lactation, duration of discharge, colour of discharge, and histopathological features...

INTRODUCTION: We evaluated the results and effects of radical nephrectomy followed by immunochemotherapy and embolization alone on the survival of patients with metastatic renal cell carcinoma. PATIENTS AND METHODS: The study included 20 patients with histologically confirmed renal cell carcinoma. Ten patients were in the combined therapy group and the other 10 patients who were unable to undergo nephrectomy because of poor performance status or unresectable tumor were in the embolization group...

AIMS: To evaluate the clinical significance of estimation of the regional cerebral oxygen saturation (rSO2) in the patients with ischaemic stroke by the cerebral oximetry during acute, sub-acute and chronic phases. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: In this prospective study, 24 patients with ischaemic stroke in the middle cerebral artery territory were included. A detailed clinical examination and appropriate laboratory investigations were carried out. The rSO2 was determined by oximetery (INVOS 3100-SD) bilaterally on the first, third, seventh, and fifteenth days...
