UNLABELLED: BACKGROUND Patients with ulcerative colitis (UC) carry autoantibodies such as perinuclear antineutrophil cytoplasmic antibodies (p-ANCA). OBJECTIVE: The aim of the present study was to evaluate the target antigens for p-ANCA in Iranian patients with UC. METHODS p-ANCA target antigens including elastase, lactoferrin, cathepsin G, myeloproxidase, lysozyme, and bactericidal permeability increasing protein (BPI) were determined in 113 patients with UC using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA)...

The aim of the present study was to determine the role of prostaglandins (PG), nitric oxide (NO) and capsaicin-sensitive sensory nerves in neutrophil infiltration in gastric adaptation to cold restraint stress in rats. Wistar rats were exposed to single or repeated cold restraint stress for 3.5 h every other day for up to 4 days. Prior to repeated stress, rats were pretreated with NG-nitro-L-arginine methyl ester (L-NAME; 10 mg/kg, s.c.), indomethacin (10 mg/kg, s.c.) or capsaicin (125 mg/kg, s.c.). The extent of gastric mucosal lesions was evaluated histologically and myeloproxidase (MPO) activity, PGE2, NO and calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) levels were measured in gastric tissue...

We investigated the effect of a therapeutic dose of raloxifene on the plasma levels of myeloperoxidase and F2alpha-isoprostanes, two markers of oxidative stress recently described as reliable indicators of coronary heart disease. Contrary to changes described in the literature for estrogens (E), raloxifene did not modify the levels of either myeloproxidase or F2alpha-isoprostanes after 3 or 6 months of treatment.

Selectin-mediated leucocyte accumulation is implicated in the pathogenesis of splanchnic artery occlusion. Sulfatide is recognized by P-selectin and blocks this adhesion molecule. We investigated the effects of sulfatide in rats subjected to splanchnic artery occlusion shock. Anaesthetized rats, subjected to total occlusion of the superior mesenteric artery and the coeliac trunk for 45 min developed severe shock resulting in death within 85-90 min after the release of occlusion. Sham operated animals were used as controls...
