OBJECTIVE: The off-label use in clinical practice of non-approved syringes for intravitreal drug administration has resulted in the detection of silicone oil drops in the vitreous of some patients. This situation derives from the lack of approved syringes for intraocular use in the Spanish market. The aim of this work is to review the use of syringes for intraocular administration, as well as to search for alternatives that meet the legal requirements for these unmet needs. METHOD: A systematic review was performed following the PRISMA 2020 Guidelines by searching PubMed with the descriptors: "silicone" AND "syringes" AND ("intraocular" OR "intravitreal") and filtering all existing publications from January 2006 to December 2023, including all those articles dealing with silicone oil release in intravitreal injections and analysing the possible consequences...

The standard of care to treat small- and medium-sized macular holes (<400μm diameter) consists of a conventional transconjunctival sutureless pars plana vitrectomy followed by ILM peeling and endotamponade, mainly with gas or in some cases with silicone oil, resulting in closure rates of over 90% and good functional results. Large (>400μm diameter), chronic and persistent macular holes remain a surgical challenge since closure rates and functional results decrease with larger macular hole diameters...

It is over 60 years since Paul Cibis et al. reported the experimental use of liquid silicone in the surgical management of retinal detachment. Initial experiences were complicated by significant side-effects associated with the impurities in the non-medical grade commercial silicone oils deployed at the time. These were substantially reduced (but not eliminated) by the adoption of refined high-viscosity medical grade silicone oils. Two of the major complications associated with silicone tamponade are (i) the variability of focus due to its movement and higher refractive index, and (ii) progressive emulsification, particularly with low viscosity oils...

The performance of silicone rubber gel elastomers is affected by the composition and structure of the crosslinker. In this work, a two-component addition liquid silicone rubber gel material was developed, and the effects of the contents of two methyl hydro-silicone oils on the compression modulus and breakdown strength of the silicone rubber gel insulating material, as well as the performance change after hot air aging at different times (24 h, 48 h, 72 h, 96 h, 120 h, 144 h, 168 h), were studied. The results showed that the breakdown strength and compression modulus exhibited an upward trend with the increase in the hydrogen silicone oil content...

Linusorbs (LOs), significantly influence oil quality and sensory properties of flaxseed oil. Trp-containing LOs exhibit distinct oxidative behavior when γ-tocopherol (γ-T) is present. Polar fractions of crude flaxseed oil were stripped via silica absorption, and reintroduced (LO and γ-T) separately into the oil matrix to investigate their interaction during storage. Compared with crude oil, LOs account for 18.49% reduction of p-anisidine value, while LOs with γ-T contributed to most of the endogenous antioxidant effect in crude oil...

A 48-year-old male with oculocutaneous albinism (OCA) presented with bilateral diminution of vision. Ocular examination revealed bilateral central corneal thinning, scarring with ectasia, depigmented irides, transillumination defects, and pseudophakia. Examination of the right eye also revealed a hyperoleon, emulsified silicon oil in the vitreous cavity, and an attached retina, while the left eye had a total rhegmatogenous retinal detachment (RRD). This case describes a unique set of challenges (the presence of an ectatic scarred cornea and a hypopigmented fundus) and sodium fluorescein dye as an adjunct in the surgical management of a complex RRD...

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: There is concern that subvisible aggregates in biotherapeutic drug products pose a risk to patient safety. We investigated the threshold of biotherapeutic aggregates needed to induce immunogenic responses. METHODS AND RESULTS: Highly aggregated samples were tested in cell-based assays and induced cellular responses in a manner that depended on the number of particles. The threshold of immune activation varied by disease state (cancer, rheumatoid arthritis, allergy), concomitant therapies, and particle number...

The key parameters governing the mechanical stability of highly porous materials such as metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are yet to be clearly understood. This study focuses on the role of the linker connectivity by investigating the mechanical stability of MIL-100(Cr), a mesoporous MOF with a hierarchical structure and a tritopic linker, and comparing it to MIL-101(Cr) having instead a ditopic linker. Using synchrotron X-ray diffraction and infrared spectroscopy, we investigate the high-pressure behavior of MIL-100(Cr) with both solid and fluid pressure transmitting media (PTM)...

PURPOSE: To report a technique consisting of inverted internal limiting membrane (ILM) flap coverage with autologous blood after air-fluid exchange and silicone oil tamponade in treating extensive retinal detachment (RD) secondary to a myopic macular hole (MH). METHODS: Retrospective case series. The technique was applied in 18 eyes with MH-RD extending beyond the equator with a minimum follow-up of 6 months. The procedures for pars plan vitrectomy (PPV) included the following:1) the ILM was peeled to the superior and inferior arcade margins, and except for the ILM in the temporal region, was hinged toward the edge of the MH...

This study explores the potential of geranium essential oil as a natural solution for combating marine biofouling, addressing the environmental concerns associated with commercial antifouling coatings. Compounds with bactericidal activities were identified by 13 Carbon nuclear magnetic resonance (13 C NMR). Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) revealed minimal impact on film thermal stability, maintaining suitability for antifouling applications. The addition of essential oil induced changes in the morphology of the film and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) analysis indicated that oil remained within the film...

Retinal necrosis is a severe condition that threatens visual function. It is caused by viruses that are known to cause acute retinal necrosis (ARN) and progressive outer retinal necrosis (PORN), which are called necrotizing herpetic retinopathies (NHR). ARN causes severe intraocular inflammation, including anterior chamber intravitreal cells, keratic precipitate, vitreous opacity, and retinal vasculitis, whereas intraocular inflammation in PORN is considered mild or virtually absent. In addition, PORN is a disease that manifests in immunosuppressive patients, such as those with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome...

Indwelling medical catheters are frequently utilized in medical procedures, but they are highly susceptible to infection, posing a vital challenge for both health workers and patients. In this study, the superhydrophobic micro-nanostructure surface was constructed on the surface of thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) membrane using heavy calcium carbonate (CaCO3 ) template. To decrease the surface free energy, hydroxyl silicone oil was grafted onto the surface, forming a super-hydrophobic surface. The water contact angle (WCA) increased from 91...

The development of slippery surfaces has been widely investigated due to their excellent icephobic properties. A distinct kind of an ice-repellent structure known as a slippery liquid-infused porous surface (SLIPS) has recently drawn attention due to its simplicity and efficacy as a passive ice-protection method. These surfaces are well known for exhibiting very low ice adhesion values (τice < 20 kPa). In this study, pure Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) fibers were fabricated using the electrospinning process to produce superhydrophobic (SHS) porous coatings on samples of the aeronautical alloy AA6061-T6...

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to search for contaminants in silicone oil tamponades removed from eyes treated for retinal detachment, and to correlate chemical results with some clinical/functional parameters of the considered eyes. METHODS: We examined a sequential cohort of eyes grouped according to the tamponade received: (1) Siluron2000 (S2), (2) RS-OIL ECS5000 (S5), and (3) Densiron Xtra (DX).
