INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVES: Organ transplanted recipients have a higher risk of non melanoma skin cancer. Our objectives were to determine incidence of skin cancer and search for associations with clinical or demographic factors in a series of kidney transplant recipients. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A prospective study with face-to-face interview of 127 kidney transplant recipients who were observed for the first time during the second half of 2010 and in 2011. All diagnosed skin cancers were confirmed by histopathology...

Melanoma incidence rates in Switzerland are very high for European standards. Incidence is increasing like in other white populations; melanoma mortality has stopped its secular increase and is decreasing in people under the age of 65. The reasons for the high melanoma rates in Switzerland can only be guessed: Switzerland is a rich country (melanoma is more prevalent among the rich); the Swiss are known to spend their vacations in Southern countries, exposing themselves to the sun. The paradox of increasing incidence and decreasing mortality rates is discussed, also from the view of the histopathologist...

Excessive exposure to solar UVA and UVB radiation is widely considered to cause skin cancers such as squamous cell carcinoma and basalioma. Direct UVB damage to skin cell DNA as well as UV-induced chronic skin inflammation, accelerated keratinocyte proliferation, inhibited apoptosis, and immunosuppression seem to underlie the UV-induced carcinogenesis. Also, UVB induces cytochrome P450 subfamilies (CYP1A1 and CYP1B1) involved in metabolic activation of organic pro-carcinogens and their conversion to ultimate carcinogens...

Gorlin-Goltz syndrome is a rare multisystemic disease, characterized by numerous basal cell carcinomas. The ideal approach for patients with the syndrome would be a treatment with a high cure rate, minimal scarring, short healing time and mild side-effects. Electrochemo-therapy is a novel therapeutic option that ablates tumours with electrical current and simultaneously administered anticancer drugs. Three patients with Gorlin-Goltz syndrome were treated with electrochemotherapy using intravenous bleomycin...

In a retrospective study, initial diagnosis and method of treatment were evaluated in 118 patients with invasive basal cell carcinoma (formerly basalioma terebrans) of the head and neck. In 97 of the total 118 patients, radical surgery with resection of important organs had to be performed, and the follow-up results of 107 patients were recorded. In 44 (41%) of the latter 107 cases, recurrences were observed despite radical tumor excision, and only 63 (59%) patients were free of tumor. In 20 patients a second recurrence and in 12 patients a third recurrence was found...

In our cohort of patients we also assessed a relation between the recurrence and chosen clinical parameters (localisation and size of tumour, TNM classification, histopathological grade of differentiation, margins of excision). MATERIAL AND METHODS: Retrospective analysis of data from patients with basalioma of the eyelid treated surgically at the Department of Ophthalmology, Faculty of Medicine Comenius University in Bratislava during the years 2005-2007...

BACKGROUND: The therapy of choice of the basalcellcarcinoma is the surgical removal often combined with soft-tissue reconstruction. Aim of this study was to evaluate the subjective aesthetic outcome and the complication rate in consequence of the chosen surgical procedure. METHOD: 57 patients formerly treated by surgery enclosing free grafts, Hughes flaps, interpolated flaps or primary wound closures were included. The patients were examined to evaluate possible surgery derived complications...

Pilomatricomas (PM) are benign skin appendageal tumors, with differentiation towards hair-forming cells, usually found in children. They are frequently misdiagnosed by clinicians, and there are also many reports of false positive diagnoses made on fine needle aspiration (FNA) cytology. PM are often mistaken for "small round blue cell" tumors in children, or for Merkel cell carcinoma, basalioma and metastatic small cell carcinoma in adults, with possible over-aggressive therapeutic approach. We present 6 cases of PM, correctly diagnosed preoperatively by FNA...

Large defects following resection of skin cancers are sometimes a challenge for the reconstructive surgeon. Although skin grafts are considered as the first choice for reconstruction of large skin defects at the trunk region, pedicled or free flaps provide sometimes a superior functional and aesthetic outcome. Perforator flaps represent a valuable option for these patients. The progress in understanding the perforator vessel system of the body facilitated the development of a plethora of novel pedicled flaps which could be transferred over long distances with minimal donor site morbidity...

Basal cell carcinoma (basalioma, BCC) is undoubtedly the most common malignant skin cancer and the most common human malignancy in general, with the continuous increase in its incidence. BCC is generally a disorder of white individuals, especially those with fair skin. UV radiation is the most important risk factor in the development of BCC. Short-wavelength UVB radiation (290-320 nm, sunburn rays) is believed to play a greater role in BCC formation than long-wavelength UVA radiation (320-400 nm, tanning rays)...

Basal cell carcinoma (basalioma, BCC) is the most common skin cancer and the most common human malignancy in general, with a continuously increasing incidence. In most cases, BCC develops on chronically sun-exposed skin in elderly people, most commonly in the head and neck region. Besides chronic UV radiation, other risk factors for the development of BCC include sun bed use, family history of skin cancer, skin type 1 and 2, a tendency to freckle in childhood, immunosuppression, previous radiotherapy, and chronic exposure to certain toxic substances such as inorganic arsenic...

The paper presents our approach to reconstruction after periocular basalioma (pBCC) excision, especially of large lower lid (LL) and medial canthal (MC) pBCC. Retrospective analysis of data of 123 patients with pBCC, confirmed on histologic examination (HE), operated in period from 1998 to 2006, was performed. Oncologic safety margins of 3 mm were marked after local anesthesia was administered. Reconstruction was done in time of surgery. In pBCC away from a lid margin, adjacent myocutaneous flaps were used...

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this article is to evaluate the diagnostic accuracy of high-resolution MRI using a microscopy surface coil to stage basal cell carcinomas of the face. BACKGROUND: Oral squamous-cell carcinoma is a frequent form of cancer in the head and neck region. The survival rate is poor. Therapy success is highly dependent on the stage of cancer development at which diagnosis is made. The disease is mostly diagnosed at a late stage. Photodynamic diagnosis is a new tool for screening examinations. This technique calls for reliable photosensitizers, such as aminolevulinic acid (ALA) and aminolevulinic acid hexylester (h-ALA). ALA and h-ALA are the source material for the synthesis of protoporphyrin IX in tumor cells...

Muir-Torre syndrome (MTS) is a rare cancer-predisposing syndrome that is autosomal dominantly inherited and characterized by the development of sebaceous skin lesions (adenomas, epitheliomas, basaliomas and carcinomas). These lesions are typically associated with tumors that belong to the spectrum of hereditary nonpolyposis colorectal cancer (HNPCC) (i.e., tumors of the colorectum, endometrium, stomach or ovary). Biliary malignancy in association with MTS has only rarely been reported. We report a case of Muir-Torre syndrome associated with intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma, a location not previously described, and associated with a novel missense mutation of the MSH2 gene (c...

In addition, in one of the cases, basalioma-like intraductal cell proliferation was observed, also showing focal acrosyringeal differentiation...
