BACKGROUND: Keratinocyte cancers are malignant diseases with a broad incidence of spread which tends to increase during the last couple of decades. The solar radiation plays a dominant role in the occurrence of BCC, but certain genetic phenotypes appear to be risky from an etiological point of view. Metatypical basal cell carcinoma (MTBCC) is a rare variant of BCC which combines the clinical and histological characteristics of BCC and SCC. Clinically they are indistinguishable from the conventional BCC, and only the histological examination can differentiate them...

Background and purpose - Metal-on-metal (MoM) total hip arthroplasty (THA) and hip resurfacing arthroplasty (HRA) have been widely used during the early 21st century. We assessed the midterm risk of cancer of patients treated with modern MoM hip implants compared with patients with non-MoM hip implants and the general Finnish population with special interest in soft tissue sarcomas and basalioma due to the findings of our previous report. Patients and methods - All large-diameter head MoM THAs and hip resurfacings performed in Finland between 2001 and 2010 were extracted from the Finnish Arthroplasty Register (10,728 patients)...

BACKGROUND: Experts worldwide agree that skin cancer is a global health issue, but only a few studies have reported on world populations' interest in skin cancer. Internet search data can reflect the interest of a population in different topics and thereby identify what the population wants to know. OBJECTIVE: Our aim was to assess the interest of the German population in nonmelanoma skin cancer and melanoma. METHODS: Google AdWords Keyword Planner was used to identify search terms related to nonmelanoma skin cancer and melanoma in Germany from November 2013 to October 2017...

The Gorlin-Goltz syndrome is a rare autosomal dominant hereditary condition, with complete penetrance and variable expressivity. Characterized by the appearance of multiple basaliomas, and often the development of keratocyst, it can also express itself by the presence of palmar/plantar depressions, calcification of brain sickle, and skeletal birth defects, although less frequently. This article presents two cases involving direct relatives, referred after the identification of several basaliomas and jaw cysts...

We present a 68-year-old patient with multiple primary infiltrative BCCs in the scalp area, initially treated 14 years ago with superficial contact X-ray therapy, end dose 60 greys, followed by electrocautery (x2) several years later. He presented in the dermatologic policlinic for diagnosis and therapy of two additional, newly-formed pigmented lesions, and because of an uncomfortable, itchy, burning sensation in the area where lesions had been treated years before. Screening cranial computer-tomography (CT) examination revealed two deformities in the form of tumor-mediated osteolysis, affecting the diploe of the tabula externa on the left parietal and parasagittal areas...

Basal cell carcinoma (BCC) also known as basalioma or basal cell cancer, is the most common skin cancer. BCC has a very low metastatic risk. This tumor can cause significant disfigurement by invading surrounding tissues. It occurs mainly in fair-skinned patients with a family history of this cancer. Sunlight is a factor in about two-thirds of these cancers. Standard surgical excision is the treatment of choice. Mohs micrographic surgery is an outpatient or inpatient procedure in which the tumor is surgically excised and then immediately examined under a microscope...

AIM: In the contemporary medicine, strong emphasis is put on early closing of body surface defects, which contributes to good and early healing, but, of course, closes the entrance gate for possible infection as well. The easiest closing of the defect is the direct suture of the emerged wound. But some defects are of such an extent, so their closure is necessary to handle other way than simple suture, e.g. by rotating flap plastic surgery. In the paper are evaluated results of flap surgery technique in 56 patients...

There are some indications that the prevalence of benign and malign neoplasms is increased in patients with a mitochondrial disorder (MID). This study aimed at calculating the prevalence of malign and benign neoplasms in MID patients compared to the general population. Among 103 adult patients with definite or probable MID 16 had a malignancy (15.5%) and 11 (10.7%) a benign neoplasm. Four patients had thyroid cancer, three patients had prostate cancer, two patients each colon cancer, or ovarian cancer, and one each lung cancer, basalioma, Paget carcinoma of the skin, Bowen disease, renal cancer, and urinary bladder cancer...

BACKGROUND/AIM: Basal cell carcinoma (BCC) is one of the most common malignant skin tumors on the head in 90% of cases and is characterized by a high local infiltrating potential and destructive growth. The aim of this study was to show the characteristics of a correlation between pathohistological types of basal cell carcinoma and the size of this lesion, aggressiveness and infiltration of basal cell carcinoma, and its effect on the course of the therapy. METHODS: We analyzed 27 patients operated on for BCC that affected the scalp and the bone...

Cutaneous head and neck tumors mainly comprise malignant melanoma, squamous cell carcinoma, trichoblastic carcinoma, Merkel cell carcinoma, adnexal carcinoma, dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans, sclerodermiform basalioma and angiosarcoma. Adapted management requires an experienced team with good knowledge of the various parameters relating to health status, histology, location and extension: risk factors for aggression, extension assessment, resection margin requirements, indications for specific procedures, such as lateral temporal bone resection, orbital exenteration, resection of the calvarium and meningeal envelopes, neck dissection and muscle resection...

Cantharis vesicatoria (blister beetle) is used in Chinese medicine and has been categorized as highly toxic in the Chinese pharmacopeia. In Europe, Cantharis patches have been used since ages to treat various skin-related diseases. We investigated the cytotoxicity of the Cantharis ingredient, cantharidin, in 41 tumor cell lines (Oncotest panel) and compared the results with those of 60 cell lines of the National Cancer Institute, USA. We found profound activity at low micromolar concentrations (log ₁₀IC₅₀ values between -6...

Basal cell carcinoma is the most common malignant tumor of the periocular region with local aggressive growth and extensive destruction. The histological subtypes of periocular basalioma, the recurrence rates and resection border relationships were analyzed and the results were compared with basaliomas from other body regions. The results of gender and age distribution, histological subtypes, recurrence rates and resection border relationships were evaluated using the χ(2)-test. The results showed a significantly higher recurrence rate (p < 0...

Melanoma incidence rates in Switzerland are very high for European standards. Incidence is increasing like in other white populations; melanoma mortality has stopped its secular increase and is decreasing in people under the age of 65. The reasons for the high melanoma rates in Switzerland can only be guessed: Switzerland is a rich country (melanoma is more prevalent among the rich); the Swiss are known to spend their vacations in Southern countries, exposing themselves to the sun. The paradox of increasing incidence and decreasing mortality rates is discussed, also from the view of the histopathologist...

Excessive exposure to solar UVA and UVB radiation is widely considered to cause skin cancers such as squamous cell carcinoma and basalioma. Direct UVB damage to skin cell DNA as well as UV-induced chronic skin inflammation, accelerated keratinocyte proliferation, inhibited apoptosis, and immunosuppression seem to underlie the UV-induced carcinogenesis. Also, UVB induces cytochrome P450 subfamilies (CYP1A1 and CYP1B1) involved in metabolic activation of organic pro-carcinogens and their conversion to ultimate carcinogens...

Gorlin-Goltz syndrome is a rare multisystemic disease, characterized by numerous basal cell carcinomas. The ideal approach for patients with the syndrome would be a treatment with a high cure rate, minimal scarring, short healing time and mild side-effects. Electrochemo-therapy is a novel therapeutic option that ablates tumours with electrical current and simultaneously administered anticancer drugs. Three patients with Gorlin-Goltz syndrome were treated with electrochemotherapy using intravenous bleomycin...

In a retrospective study, initial diagnosis and method of treatment were evaluated in 118 patients with invasive basal cell carcinoma (formerly basalioma terebrans) of the head and neck. In 97 of the total 118 patients, radical surgery with resection of important organs had to be performed, and the follow-up results of 107 patients were recorded. In 44 (41%) of the latter 107 cases, recurrences were observed despite radical tumor excision, and only 63 (59%) patients were free of tumor. In 20 patients a second recurrence and in 12 patients a third recurrence was found...
