A sensor ear tag (SET) containing Global Positioning System (GPS), accelerometer, Radio-Frequency Identification (RFID), and Bluetooth technologies was tested for wearing comfort and compliance with animal welfare requirements in cattle in a free stall barn and on summer pasture in Switzerland. The SET was equipped with a long-lasting battery via solar panel and used a «twin pin» fixing system. Right ears of 12 newborns and 26 adolescent animals were tagged with the SET. While left ears were tagged simultaneously with official ear tags in newborns, the adolescent animals already carried the official ear tags...

INTRODUCTION: Heart failure has an enormous impact in terms of mortality, morbidity, and costs for healthcare organizations. Indications for implanted heart devices, such as pacemakers or implantable cardioverter defibrillators (ICDs) are constantly increasing. With the arrival of the telemedicine, nurses play an important role in the remote management of chronic heart diseases. The purpose of this study was to describe the experiences of nurses who remotely monitor patients with an implanted heart device in Italy...

The search for silent atrial tachyarrhythmias remains one of the cornerstones in patients suffering from embolic stroke of undetermined source. We report the case of a 76-year-old female patient suffering from recurrence of ischemic stroke, adequately selected based on the presence of predictors of atrial fibrillation (AF), to perform prolonged ECG monitoring. This recording allowed to document long-lasting AF triggered by atrial tachycardia. It was also possible to demonstrate a direct correlation between AF and new cerebral stroke...

PURPOSE: The correct placement of people with mental disorders in psychiatric residential facilities (PRF) and the monitoring of their progress in these facilities is a critical issue that has not been fully settled in the Italian system. To overcome this problem, some validated instruments are used, which mostly assess the patient's functioning/disability, while no instruments have been set up to assess functional autonomy in patients with a psychiatric disorder residents in RFs. The Verona Department of Mental Health has created the Monitoring of the Path of Rehabilitation (MPR) Form with the aim of assessing the functional autonomy of patients to admit and monitor them adequately in their residential pathways...

Then it was necessary to evaluate the application and usefulness of the score in the specific contest. The aim of this project was adopting a validated and standardized methodology for detecting vital parameters to identificate early the signs and symptoms of a possible clinical deterioration and to create an effective communication between professionals...

The current COVID-19 pandemic has renewed interest in providing healthcare services based on the implementation of innovative technologies. Such strategy capillarizes the therapeutic opportunities for larger urban areas, mostly when people are living under extraordinarily difficult circumstances. Improving care delivery in cardiovascular diseases appears particularly feasible when telemedicine is pursued, especially with regard to baseline standard 12-lead electrocardiography, ambulatory electrocardiographic monitoring, and 24-hour ambulatory blood pressure monitoring...

The project «Healthy claws - the foundation for the future» aims to establish a Swiss national claw health monitoring based on digital recordings by claw trimmers during claw trimming. To assess claw health on the participating farms, between-herd prevalence, within-herd prevalence and cow prevalence of all claw disorders based on the «ICAR Claw Health Atlas» were calculated during this study. Claw trimmers underwent an intensive training and examination in order to ensure data quality. To guarantee the representativity of the prevalences, only farm claw trimmings were considered, where ≥ 80 % of the cows in a herd were trimmed...

This paper describes how the health surveillance protocols adopted in hospitals and nursing homes have changed in response to the spread of SARS-CoV-2 and its risks. These changes concern assessments that must be performed with urgency, to detect potential cases and symptoms that may indicate contagion and to protect vulnerable and hypersensitive workers. Besides, these changes have been implemented in order to regulate how the appointed occupational physician should perform everyday tasks, particularly in regard to preventive visits, periodic visits, office visits, and visits meant to authorize one's return to the workplace...

The results of the OsMed reports of the Italian Medicines Agency (AIFA) on consumption and expenditure related to biosimilar medicines show a high heterogeneity at the regional level, with great differences in terms of both consumption and price. In light of the potential savings and the growing number of biological medicines whose patents have expired or are about to expire, it is therefore desirable that the regions with the lowest levels of consumption take action to increase the awareness of health professionals on efficacy and safety of such treatments and the potential advantages in terms of sustainability of the national health system...

This made it possible to identify specific trends in hospital and local purchases, such as the extensive use of off-label drugs with little evidence of efficacy during the first weeks of the epidemic, and to progressively assess the degree of implementation of regulatory and ministerial recommendations.Fin dalle prime fasi dell'emergenza covid-19 è emersa per l'Agenzia Italiana del Farmaco (AIFA) la necessità di monitorare in modo specifico l'uso dei farmaci utilizzati nel corso dell'epidemia...

We are presenting here the findings of the reaction to the COVID-19 epidemic during the period March to June 2020 of those centres participating in the research EASY-NET which is on-going in Italy, funded by the Ministry of Health and co-founded by the Regional Health Authorities. The objective of EASY-NET is to evaluate the effectiveness of the audit and feedback (A&F) strategies in different clinical and organizational settings in seven regions. As a negative consequence of the COVID-19 epidemic, the activities of the project have suddenly slowed down; nevertheless, the COVID-19 epidemic represented an opportunity to apply the A&F methodology and support the healthcare within the regional authorities in order to manage and monitor the impact of this new disease...

Peritoneal dialysis (PD) related infections continue to be a major cause of morbidity and mortality in patients undertaking renal replacement therapy with PD. Nevertheless, despite the great effort invested in the prevention of PD infective episodes, almost one third of technical failures are still caused by peritonitis. Recent studies support the idea that there is a direct role of exit-site (ESIs) and tunnel infections (TIs) in causing peritonitis. Hence, both the prompt ESI/TI diagnosis and correct prognostic hypothesis would allow the timely start of an appropriate antibiotic therapy decreasing the associated complications and preserving the PD technique...

The 19 of February 2018 the Italian Medicines Agency (AIFA - Agenzia Italiana del Farmaco) temporary stopped the new administration of Ulipristal Acetate (UPA) for treating uterine leiomyomas symptoms, because liver injury and hepatic failure had been reported in relationship with UPA use. After the European Medicines Agency review of risks of UPA, the 3 of August 2018 the AIFA produced another note, disclosing that a cause-effect relationship between the UPA use and liver injury is not proved and that some patients can be discontinuously treated if surgery is not recommended...

Pharmacological treatment of alcohol use disorder represents an essential core of the therapeutic project in a multidisciplinary approach. While non-drug treatment is evolving, from a medical perspective few pharmacotherapies are available; in particular acamprosate, naltrexone and more recently nalmefene among anticraving drugs, disulfiram as an antidipsotropic medication. New studies are focusing on off-label drugs. Moreover, scientific evidence has to support any therapeutic indication which should be tailored on patient needs and comorbidity by considering the individual bio-psycho-social profile...
