PURPOSE: To compare changes in corneal endothelial parameters following femtosecond laser-assisted cataract surgery (FLACS) and conventional phacoemulsification (CPS) in different corneal regions. SETTING: Chang Gung Memorial Hospital, Linkou, Taiwan, 2018- 2022. DESIGN: Single-center, retrospective. METHODS: Before and 1, 3, and 6 months post-op, specular microscopy was performed to measure endothelial cell density (ECD), corneal thickness, hexagonal cell rate (Hex), and coefficient of variation (CoV)...

PURPOSE: The main objective is to quantify the lens nuclear opacity using spectral-domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT) and to evaluate its association with Lens Opacities Classification System III (LOCS-III) system, lens thickness (LT), and surgical parameters. The secondary objective is to assess the diagnostic model performance for hard nuclear cataract. METHODS: This study included 70 eyes of 57 adults with cataract, with 49 (70%) and 21 (30%) in training and validation cohort, respectively...

PURPOSE: To assess the surgical efficiency in cataract surgery comparing two phacoemulsification systems. METHODS: Prospective, consecutive-comparative study in a two-site private practice. Three hundred and one eyes undergoing standard or femtosecond laser-assisted (FLACS) cataract surgery with either the R-Evo Smart (BVI, Waltham, USA) and/or the Centurion Vision System (Alcon, Fort Worth, USA). Preoperative eye characteristics (degree of cataract using the lens opacities classification system LOCS III grading) and intraoperative outcomes (total ultrasound time and total estimated fluid aspirated/drainage bag weighting) were registered in all cases...

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Pediatric refractive surgery has been growing at a steady pace since its introduction in the early 1980 s. This article will review common laser refractive surgeries performed on pediatric patients along with controversies regarding the practice. RECENT FINDINGS: Pediatric refractive surgery is reserved for a small population of children who fail amblyopic treatment due to high anisometropic refractive errors. Publications over the years have treated these children with various types of laser refractive surgery...

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Higher degrees of myopia are currently being treated with refractive surgery. However, there is limited characterization and outcomes data for this cohort. This article aims to review the literature on highly myopic patients who had refractive surgery and present a retrospective analysis of 149 patients (270 eyes) with high to extreme myopia (≤-5.0D SE) who underwent refractive surgery [laser-assisted subepithelial keratomileusis (LASIK), photorefractive keratectomy (PRK), or implantable collamer lense (ICL)] at a single practice...

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Laser keratorefractive surgery achieves excellent visual outcomes for refractive error correction. With femtosecond laser, small incision lenticule extraction (SMILE) is an increasingly viable alternative to laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis (LASIK). Comparative studies demonstrate similar efficacy and predictability between SMILE and LASIK, making it difficult for clinicians to choose which to use. This review thus compares femtosecond-LASIK (FS-LASK) and SMILE in various scenarios, to assist clinicians in deciding which refractive surgery procedure to recommend...

METHODS: In this retrospective observational study, we enrolled patients who underwent conventional cataract surgery or FLACS with the implantation of hydrophobic 1-piece monofocal IOL. The magnitude of IOL decentration and tilt were measured using S S-OCT...

Clinical studies using suspensions or sheets of human pluripotent cell-derived retinal pigment epithelial cells (hiPSC-RPE) have been conducted globally for diseases such as age-related macular degeneration. Despite being minimally invasive, cell suspension transplantation faces challenges in targeted cell delivery and frequent cell leakage. Conversely, although the RPE sheet ensures targeted delivery with correct cell polarity, it requires invasive surgery, and graft preparation is time-consuming. We previously reported hiPSC-RPE strips as a form of quick cell aggregate that allows for reliable cell delivery to the target area with minimal invasiveness...

OBJECTIVES: Detailed superiority of CAD EYE (Fujifilm, Tokyo, Japan), an artificial intelligence for polyp detection/diagnosis, compared to endoscopists is not well examined. We examined endoscopist's ability using movie sets of colorectal lesions which were detected and diagnosed by CAD EYE accurately. METHODS: Consecutive lesions of ≤10 mm were examined live by CAD EYE from March-June 2022 in our institution. Short unique movie sets of each lesion with and without CAD EYE were recorded simultaneously using two recorders for detection under white light imaging (WLI) and linked color imaging (LCI) and diagnosis under blue laser/light imaging (BLI)...

Uveal cysts have been reported to cause vision changes in dogs. The objective of this article is to report removing multiple uveal cysts from both eyes of a canine patient using a previously unreported methodology. A bimanual irrigation and aspiration procedure is reported here as an alternative method for managing multiple anterior segment iris cysts in the dog. The results of the surgery were mild postoperative inflammation that resolved within 1 week and no other complications were encountered. Overall, the authors conclude that the procedure was a less invasive alternative to the traditional approaches for removal of multiple uveal cysts including laser rupture of cysts, direct aspiration or removal using coaxial irrigation and aspiration through a standard clear corneal approach to the anterior chamber with or without the aid of viscoelastic floatation...

BACKGROUND: Diabetic patients with cataracts encounter specific difficulties during cataract surgery due to alterations in microcirculation, blood supply, metabolism, and the microenvironment. Traditional phacoemulsification may not fully tackle these issues, especially in instances with substantial preoperative astigmatism. The utilization of femtosecond laser-assisted phacoemulsification, in conjunction with Toric intraocular lens (IOL) implantation, offers a potentially more efficient strategy...
