INTRODUCTION: Erectile dysfunction (ED) is a common medical condition that requires high-quality evidence to guide clinical practice; however, systematic reviews (SRs) and meta-analyses (MAs) often vary in quality, raising concerns regarding the validity of their results. AIM: To perform an objective analysis of SRs and MAs in ED treatment and management and to report on the quality of published literature. METHODS: A comprehensive search in PubMed/MEDLINE and EMBASE of 12 high-impact urology journals was used to identify relevant publications...

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the landscape of retractions of literature and determine the prevalence of research misconduct in the field of Urology. METHODS: Three databases (PUBMED, EMBASE, Retraction Watch) were queried for all retracted studies of urologic topics in both urologic and non-urologic journals from April 1999 to March 2018. Two reviewers screened the records and determined the final list of articles to be included in the analysis. RESULTS: 138 articles met the inclusion criteria...

The February 2015 issue of ckj started a new era with renewed efforts to be useful to the training and practicing nephrologists and a new focus on Clinical and Translational Nephrology. Four years later, it has become a truly global journal with contributors and readers from all over the world. The increase in quality of the published material has resulted in a nearly exponential growth of citations. Since 2016, ckj is listed in the new Emerging Sources Citation Index (ESCI) database from Clarivate Analytics and from January 2019 it will be listed in the full Science Citation Index...

Following the publication of this paper, the authors have realized that two out of the three of the authors' address affiliations were not presented correctly. Essentially, the information provided in the first and third address affiliations was confused (and there is no third address affiliation applicable to this study), and the Chinese People's Liberation Army Hospital for the first affilation was presented incorrectly with a Weifang address. In spite of these errors in the affiliations, note that the corresponding author's address featured in the Correspondence box was presented correctly in the paper...

Educational research (ER) should be defined as the motivated guidance of residents to be involved and to conduct structured research. ER does not only pursue the goal to promote residents for an academic career but it also concentrates on the improvement of residency in general. Based on the data of national and international studies lack of time, enthusiastic mentors and financial resources represent the most significant obstacles to realize concepts of dedicated ER. The current article highlights options to improving ER with a structured curriculum starting in medical school and extending to board examination and fellowship training...

In an effort to improve the quality of statistics in the clinical urology literature, statisticians at European Urology, The Journal of Urology, Urology and BJUI came together to develop a set of guidelines to address common errors of statistical analysis, reporting and interpretation. Authors should "break any of the guidelines if it makes scientific sense to do so" but would need to provide a clear justification. Adoption of the guidelines will in our view not only increase the quality of published papers in our journals but improve statistical knowledge in our field in general...

The role of surgery in the locoregional management of many solid tumors has long been established. For testicular cancer, the incorporation of lymphadenectomy has played an important part in generating long-term survival outcomes in excess of 90% for germ cell tumor patients. In this review, we address several clinical scenarios in which lymphadenectomy at times is underutilized, and others ill advised.

Background: As the specialty of Andrology expands it is important to establish the most important studies that have shaped, and continue to shape, current research and clinical practice. Bibliometric analysis involving a citation rank list is an established means by which to identify the published material within a given field that has greatest intellectual influence. This bibliometric analysis sought to identify the 100 most influential manuscripts in Andrology, as well as the key research themes that have shaped contemporary understanding and management of andrological conditions...

OBJECTIVE: To determine what factors of published urology research articles are associated with future citations. METHODS: We identified all primary research articles published between 1997 and 2007 in Journal of Urology, British Journal of Urology International, Urology, and European Urology. Only 50 articles in this period had accrued 0 or 1 citation in a 10-year period following publication. We compared the characteristics of the articles in the low citation cohort to the 50 articles with the highest number of citations from the same journals and time period...

INTRODUCTION: Silodosin determines smooth muscle relaxation in bladder and prostate tissues, increases bladder blood flow in conditions of chronic bladder ischemia and regulates the activity of transcriptional factors responsible for stromal growth and prostate hyperplasia. Phase III trials have already demonstrated the efficacy and safety of silodosin in the treatment of patients bothered by lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) secondary to benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). OBJECTIVE: We aimed to describe the rationality for the use of silodosin and to summarize the current literature on the use of Silodosin for the treatment of LUTS...

Urinary tract dilatation is identified sonographically in 1-2% of fetuses and reflects a spectrum of possible nephro-uropathies. There is significant variability in the clinical management of individuals with prenatal urinary tract dilatation to postnatal urinary pathologies, because of a lack of consensus and uniformity in defining and classifying urinary tract dilation. Ultrasonography is the first step to screen and diagnose kidneys and the urinary tract diseases of the children. The need for a correct ultrasound approach led to the realization of algorithms aimed at standardizing the procedures, the parameters and the classifications...

The purpose of the review was to present the latest updates on percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL) procedure in terms of indications and evolving techniques, and to identify the advantages and disadvantages of each modality. The data for this review were collected after a thorough PubMed search in core clinical journals in English language. The key words included "PCNL" and "PNL" in combination with "indications", "techniques", "review" and "miniaturized PCNL"...

BACKGROUND: Surgical intervention is one of the common therapeutic interventions applied to a vast class of diseases. Unwarranted variation in practice style in different locations is considered as practice style variations (PSVs), which cause undesirable effects on patient health status and economic consequences. The magnitude of the variations in surgical interventions and its effects on clinical outcomes of patients and also utilization of resources have been investigated in recent years...

European Urology has established three principles for improving the quality of statistics in papers published in our journal: (1) systematic guidance for authors based on common statistical errors in urology research; (2) all papers with substantive statistics are reviewed by a statistician; and (3) ongoing innovation with respect to statistical reporting.

OBJECTIVE: To quantify the relationship between the number of Twitter mentions and the number of academic citations a urology publication receives. MATERIALS AND METHODS: 213 papers from 7 prominent urology journals were examined 37 months after publication. Articles were evaluated with 2 citation based "bibliometrics" (Scopus, Google Scholar) and Twitter mentions were tracked using the Altmetric Bookmarklet. The number of citations and Twitter mentions were compared using one way ANOVA and bivariate fit analysis...
