The origin of high-energy cosmic rays, atomic nuclei that continuously impact Earth's atmosphere, is unknown. Because of deflection by interstellar magnetic fields, cosmic rays produced within the Milky Way arrive at Earth from random directions. However, cosmic rays interact with matter near their sources and during propagation, which produces high-energy neutrinos. We searched for neutrino emission using machine learning techniques applied to 10 years of data from the IceCube Neutrino Observatory. By comparing diffuse emission models to a background-only hypothesis, we identified neutrino emission from the Galactic plane at the 4...

IMPORTANCE: SARS-CoV-2 infection can result in ongoing, relapsing, or new symptoms or other health effects after the acute phase of infection; termed post-acute sequelae of SARS-CoV-2 infection (PASC), or long COVID. The characteristics, prevalence, trajectory and mechanisms of PASC are ill-defined. The objectives of the Researching COVID to Enhance Recovery (RECOVER) Multi-site Observational Study of PASC in Adults (RECOVER-Adult) are to: (1) characterize PASC prevalence; (2) characterize the symptoms, organ dysfunction, natural history, and distinct phenotypes of PASC; (3) identify demographic, social and clinical risk factors for PASC onset and recovery; and (4) define the biological mechanisms underlying PASC pathogenesis...

BACKGROUND: There is a growing presence of literature within plastic surgery that establishes best practice for postoperative antibiotics after implant-based breast reconstruction (IBBR), although it has not been widely adopted or translated into clinical practice. This study aims to determine how antibiotic and duration affects patient outcomes. We hypothesize that IBBR patients who receive a longer duration of postoperative antibiotics will demonstrate higher rates of antibiotic resistance as compared with the institutional antibiogram...

BACKGROUND: Achieving optimal surgical outcomes in pancreatic adenocarcinoma requires a combination of both curative-intent resection to oncologic standards and stage-specific neoadjuvant or adjuvant therapy. This investigation sought to examine factors associated with receipt of standard-adherent surgery (SAS) and guideline-recommended therapy (GRT) and determine the impact of compliance on patient survival. PATIENTS AND METHODS: From the 2006-2016 National Cancer Database, 21,304 patients underwent resection for nonmetastatic pancreatic adenocarcinoma...

BACKGROUND: Spino-pelvic orientation (SPO) may affect dislocation risk following total hip arthroplasty (THA). It can be measured on lateral lumbo-pelvic radiographs. The sacro-femoro-pubic (SFP) angle, measured on an antero-posterior (AP) pelvis radiograph, is a reliable proxy for pelvic tilt (PT), a measurement of SPO measured on a lateral lumbo-pelvic radiograph. The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between SFP angle and dislocation following THA. METHODS: An Institutional Review Board-approved retrospective case-control study was conducted at a single academic center...

BACKGROUND: Patients admitted to internal medicine may be moved to more advanced-care settings when their condition deteriorates. Modular polyketide synthases (PKSs) are polymerases that employ α-carboxyacyl-CoAs as extender substrates. This enzyme family contains several catalytic modules, where each module is responsible for a single round of polyketide chain extension. Although PKS modules typically use malonyl-CoA or methylmalonyl-CoA for chain elongation, many other malonyl-CoA analogues are used to diversify polyketide structures in nature. Previously, we developed a method to alter an extension substrate of a given module by exchanging an acyltransferase (AT) domain while maintaining protein folding...

Approximately 15% of adult Canadians with SARS-CoV-2 infection develop lingering symptoms beyond 12 weeks after acute infection, known as post-COVID condition or long COVID. Some of the commonly reported long COVID cardiovascular symptoms include fatigue, shortness of breath, chest pain, and palpitations. Suspected long-term cardiovascular complications of SARS-CoV-2 infection might present as a constellation of symptoms that can be challenging for clinicians to diagnose and treat. When assessing patients with these symptoms, clinicians need to keep in mind myalgic encephalomyelitis/chronic fatigue syndrome, postexertional malaise and postexertional symptom exacerbation, dysautonomia with cardiac manifestations such as inappropriate sinus tachycardia, and postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome, and occasionally mast cell activation syndrome...

Vascularization is essential for realizing thick and functional tissue constructs that can be utilized for in vitro study platforms and in vivo grafts. The vasculature enables the transport of nutrients, oxygen, and wastes and is also indispensable to organ functional units such as the nephron filtration unit, the blood-air barrier, and the blood-brain barrier. This review aims to discuss the latest progress of organ-like vascularized constructs with specific functionalities and realizations even though they are not yet ready to be used as organ substitutes...

The Blood Profiling Atlas in Cancer (BLOODPAC) Consortium is a collaborative effort involving stakeholders from the public, industry, academia, and regulatory agencies focused on developing shared best practices on liquid biopsy.
