Since the publication of the draft sequence of the human genome in April 2001 (1,2), the pressure on life scientists to annotate and gain useful knowledge from the millions of As, Gs, Cs and Ts, is ever increasing. Now that the initial hype has passed, the life sciences field demands the technologies and computer power that can produce and analyze data in a high-throughput manner for drug discovery and disease diagnosis. Cambridge Healthtech Institute's Beyond Genome 2001 conference(1) (17-22 June 2001, San Francisco, CA, USA) brought together the latest research in these technologies in a 'tri-conference' that encompassed the 10th Annual Conference of Bioinformatics and Genome Research, the 3rd Annual Conference of In Silico Biology and the 5th Annual Conference of Proteomics...

A major goal of pharmacogenomics is to identify the human genetic variation that influences susceptibility to complex diseases. Recently, theoretical statistical analyses have suggested that genes for complex diseases may be found by linkage disequilibrium (i.e., association). Single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) susceptibility alleles for common diseases can occur at high frequencies in various populations and, thus, have a major impact on morbidity and mortality. To be successful, SNP mapping studies require successful teamwork, integrating clinicians, epidemiologists, molecular genetics experts, laboratory automation engineers, bioinformatics and database experts...

Cambridge Healthtech Institute's Third Annual Conference on Lab-on-a-Chip and Microarray technology covered the latest advances in this technology and applications in life sciences. Highlights of the meetings are reported briefly with emphasis on applications in genomics, drug discovery and molecular diagnostics. There was an emphasis on microfluidics because of the wide applications in laboratory and drug discovery. The lab-on-a-chip provides the facilities of a complete laboratory in a hand-held miniature device...

A merger between two multi-million dollar IS firms in July 1993 created a company with $315 million in sales and a sharp focus on healthcare. National Healthtech Corp., parent firm of MRI, brought the focus to the deal. And Dallas-based Affiliated Computer Services, a data services provider to financial, commercial and healthcare organizations, brought telecommunications and outsourcing expertise. Bill Childs, editor-in-chief, recently spoke with the two firms' principals--Richard A. Montgomery, CEO of National Healthtech Corp...
