Phenomenon : Medical students have difficulties applying knowledge about biomedical mechanisms learned before clerkships to patient care activities. Many studies frame this challenge as a problem of basic science knowledge transfer predominantly influenced by students' individual cognitive processes. Social cognitive theory would support extending this framing to the interplay between the individual's cognition, the environment, and their behaviors. This study investigates senior medical students' experiences of biochemistry knowledge use during workplace learning and examines how their experiences were influenced by interactions with people and other elements of the clinical learning environment...

PURPOSE: The Harvard Medical School Pathways curriculum represents a major reform effort. Our goals were to enhance reasoning and clinical skills and improve the learning environment and students' approach to learning via use of collaborative, case-based pedagogy; early clinical exposure; and enhanced approaches to teaching and evaluating clinical skills. We evaluated the impact of Pathways on key outcomes related to these goals. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this prospective, mixed-methods study, we compared the last prior-curriculum cohort (2014 matriculation, n  = 135) and first new-curriculum cohort (2015 matriculation, n  = 135)...

OBJECTIVE: The authors describe how attitudes and confidence in the integration of psychiatry into other areas of medicine change over time during clinical clerkship in medical school. METHODS: From January 2015 to December 2016, medical students from the University of Iowa were recruited for a prospective study of changes in the Attitudes and Confidence in the Integration of Psychiatry Scale (ACIP) scale. The survey instrument was completed before their psychiatry clerkship, after the clerkship, and at the end of the year following that and other clinical clerkships...

BACKGROUND: In curriculum reforms under Competency-Based Medical Education (CBME) introduced by the National Medical Commission, medical students are recognized as one of the stake holders. The well-designed multiple-choice questions (MCQs) help students in assessment as well as promote deep learning. The objective of this study is to assess the perceptions of the Indian medical students towards the examination patterns in their undergraduate curriculum with particular reference to MCQs...

E-learning strategies have become an essential part of biomedical education. However, why and how students select hardware tools and software formats during their education has not been sufficiently analyzed and documented. Yet, these aspects should be taken into account when designing or offering new e-learning modalities to learners. Two medical school classes at a major US medical school were surveyed about their use of e-learning resources during their first year of medical school or their preparation for their first licensing examination (USMLE® Step 1), respectively...

Unlike previous generations, Gen Z are inundated with an abundance of digital information that is readily and freely available, including professional advice from external sources which are not part of the formal curriculum (unspecified social networks, handed down Anki cards, etc...

INTRODUCTION: In 2019, 4.6% of US-MD students self-identified as students with disabilities (SWD); many of these students will require accommodations on the USMLE Step-1 examination. Given the high-stakes nature of Step-1 for medical school advancement and residency match, SWD denied accommodations on Step-1 face considerable consequences. To date no study has investigated the rate of accommodation denial and its impact on medical school operations. METHODS: To investigate the rate of accommodation denial and evaluate whether Step-1 accommodation denial impacts medical school operations, a 10-question survey was sent to Student Affairs Deans and disability resource professionals at all fully-accredited US-MD granting programs...

Phenomenon: According to adult learning theories, effective cognitive integration of basic and clinical science may promote the transfer of knowledge to patient care. The placement of the U.S. Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE) Step 1 after the core clerkships is one strategy intended to facilitate cognitive integration, though learner experiences with this model are unexplored. The purpose of this study is to understand students' perspectives on basic and clinical science integration in a post-clerkship Step 1 curriculum...

INTRODUCTION: Point-of-care ultrasound (US) is used in clinical practice across many specialties. Ultrasound (US) curricula for medical students are increasingly common. Optimal timing, structure, and effect of ultrasound education during medical school remains poorly understood. This study aims to retrospectively determine the association between participation in a preclinical, longitudinal US curriculum and medical student academic performance. METHODS: All first-year medical students at a medical school in the Midwest region of the United States were offered a voluntary longitudinal US curriculum...

BACKGROUND: Nearly all U.S. medical students engage in a 4-8 week period of intense preparation for their first-level licensure exams, termed a "dedicated preparation period" (DPP). It is widely assumed that student well-being is harmed during DPPs, but evidence is limited. This study characterized students' physical, intellectual, emotional, and social well-being during DPPs. METHODS: This was a cross-sectional survey sent electronically to all second-year students at four U...

The United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE) Step 1 examination will transition from graded to pass/fail scoring starting no earlier than January 2022. Orthopedic surgery residency programs will need to adapt to these changes. The goal of this study was to investigate the perceptions of orthopedic surgery residency program directors on the change of Step 1 from a graded to a pass/fail examination. We also investigated how the change would affect the other factors that are typically considered in the selection of orthopedic surgery residents...

Background United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE) Step 1 is a common metric looked at by residency programs to determine invitations for candidates to interview. However, USMLE Step 2 Clinical Knowledge (CK) has also been an important factor for selecting applicants to interview and plays a significant role during applicant selection. This study aims to identify academic performance measures that correlate with USMLE Step 2 CK scores and to develop a model to predict USMLE Step 2 CK scores using previous academic measures from the first two cohorts in the longitudinal interleaved clerkship (LInC) at the Kirk Kerkorian School of Medicine at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (KSOM)...

Medical scribes have become a common fixture in healthcare, but little is known about the impact of a scribe experience on medical school performance. The objective of this study was to determine the frequency of scribe experience for medical students and impact on performance. Thirty-four percent of students were scribes prior to medical school. The majority of scribes felt their scribe experience helped them during their pre-clerkship curriculum. However, there were no significant differences in USMLE Step 1 scores, pre-clerkship class rank, post-encounter note grades, and wellbeing between students with and without scribe experience...
