Atmospheric aerosol particles, collected with the particle-into-liquid sampler at SMEARII station in Finland in mid-August 2007, were analysed for biogenic acids. The sample pretreatment method, comprising solid-phase extraction with anion exchange and hydrophilic-lipophilic balance materials, was optimized. Extraction efficiencies of solid-phase extraction from 10 and 20ml samples were about 100%, with average relative standard deviation of 8.9%, in concentration range from 12.5 to 50ng/ml of the acid. Extraction of aldehydes was less successful, with efficiencies from 69 to 163% and average 10% deviation...

Oxidation products of biogenic volatile organic compounds (BVOCs) (isoprene, monoterpenes, and sesquiterpene) were investigated in the Canadian High Arctic aerosols using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. Twelve specific secondary organic aerosol (SOA) tracers and two hydroxyacids (glycolic and salicylic acids) were determined. The total concentrations of alpha-/beta-pinene oxidation products (e.g., pinic and 3-hydroxyglutaric acids, 138-5303 pg m(-3), average 1646 pg m(-3)) were much higher than those of isoprene oxidation products (e...

Essential oil and oleoresins (ethanol and ethyl acetate) of Piper nigrum were extracted by using Clevenger and Soxhlet apparatus, respectively. GC-MS analysis of pepper essential oil showed the presence of 54 components representing about 96.6% of the total weight. beta-Caryophylline (29.9%) was found as the major component along with limonene (13.2%), beta-pinene (7.9%), sabinene (5.9%), and several other minor components. The major component of both ethanol and ethyl acetate oleoresins was found to contain piperine (63...
