The ( S )-(+)-1-(4-bromo-phen-yl)- N -[(4-methoxyphen-yl)methyl-idene]ethyl-amine ligand, C16 H16 BrNO, (I), was synthesized through the reaction of 4-meth-oxy-anisaldehyde with ( S )-(-)-1-(4-bromo-phen-yl)ethyl-amine. The title complex, [PdCl2 (C9 H13 N)2 ], comprises a single mol-ecule in the asymmetric unit. The PdII atom is tetra-coordinated by two N atoms from two trans -aligned organic ligands and two Cl ligands, forming a square-planar metal coordination environment. The distances from the ortho -H atoms on the phenyl ring to the central PdII atom fall within the range 4.70-5.30 Å, precluding any significant intra-molecular Pd⋯H inter-actions.

We present four proton-responsive palladium and platinum complexes, [MCl2(RPONNHO)] (M = Pd, Pt; R = iPr, tBu) synthesised by complexation of PdCl2 or PtCl2(COD) with the 1,8-naphthyridine ligand RPONNHO. Deprotonation of [MCl2(tBuPONNHO)] switches the ligand coordination from mono- to dinucleating, offering a synthetic pathway to bimetallic PdII and PtII complexes [M2Cl2(tBuPONNO)2]. Two-electron reduction gives planar MI-MI complexes [M2(tBuPONNO)2] (M = Pd, Pt) containing a metal-metal bond. The 1,2,4,5-tetrakis(alkylthio)benzenes are redox-active organosulfur molecules that support oxidation to a stable radical cation. Their utility as ligands for the assembly of multimetal complexes with tailored functionality/property is unexamined.
