Two discrete nitrate-bridged novel "pseudo-double-propeller"-shaped hexanuclear Cu/Ln clusters of the formula [Cu(4)Ln(2)L(4)L'(4)(NO(3))(2)(OH(2))(2)]·3NO(3)·4H(2)O [Ln = Dy, Gd; LH = o-vanilin; L'H = 2-(hydroxyethyl)pyridine] were synthesized and characterized. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction studies revealed the trimeric half-propeller-type Cu(2)/Ln core connected to other opposite-handed similar trimers by a bridging nitrate ligand. The Dy analogue, [Cu(4)Dy(2)L(4)L'(4)(NO(3))(2)(OH(2))(2)]·3NO(3)·4H(2)O, shows frequency-dependent out-of-phase alternating-current magnetic susceptibility, which indicates that this novel discrete [Cu(4)Dy(2)] heterometallic cluster may exhibit single-molecule-magnet behavior...

Molecular structures of aroylhydrazones derived from salicylaldehyde, o-vanilin and nicotinic acid hydrazide in DMSO and DMSO/H(2)O mixtures have been studied by NMR, UV-Vis, ATR and Raman spectroscopy. The addition of water to the system did not induce the tautomeric conversion of the existing form constituted of the ketoamino hydrazide part and the enolimino aldehyde part, but it was involved in the formation of hydrated molecules. Vibrational spectra (ATR and Raman) clearly indicated hydrogen bonding of the studied hydrazones through the carbonyl, amino and hydroxyl groups with water molecules...

In the title compound, C(6)H(6)N(2)O·C(8)H(8)O(3), an equimolar co-crystal of nicotinamide and vanillin, the aromatic ring and the amide fragment of the nicotinamide mol-ecule make a dihedral angle of 32.6 (2)°. The vanillin mol-ecule is almost planar, with an r.m.s. deviation for all non-H atoms of 0.0094 Å. The vaniline and nicotinamide aromatic rings are nearly coplanar, the dihedral angle between them being 3.20 (9)°. In the crystal, the two components are linked through N-H⋯O and O-H⋯N hydrogen bonds into chains along the a axis...

The title compound, C(16)H(16)N(2)O(4), was obtained from the reaction of hydrazine hydrate and o-vanilin in absolute ethanol. The mol-ecule is almost planar (except for the methyl H atoms), with a mean deviation from the plane of 0.0259 Å. The mol-ecular structure also exhibits an approximate non-crystallographic twofold axis. Intra-molecular O-H⋯N hydrogen bonds occur. In the crystal, inter-molecular C-H⋯O hydrogen bonds generate mol-ecular zigzag sheets. The sheets stack through C-H⋯π inter-actions, leading to a three-dimensional-network...

The results and the significance of neonatal mass-screening programmes for inborn errors of metabolism, conducted by the National Research Institute of Mother and Child (NRIMC), are discussed. As the first in Poland, in 1964, mass-screening for phenylketonuria (PKU) was introduced. The BIA-Guthrie test was used. Other Guthrie tests (GBIA) were applied in homocystinuria, tyrosinemia, histidinemia and leucinosis (Maple Syrup Urine Disease-MSUD). In the middle of the 60. the Beutler and Baluda test was introduced for galactosaemia, as well as the Efron urine test in infant screening for different inborn errors of metabolism...

A micromethod, developed for estimation of total lipids in lymphocytes, other blood cells and body tissues, involved extraction of lymphocyte suspension with chloroform-methanol mixture, elimination of non-lipid impurities by means of the extract washing, concentration of the lipid fraction and hydrolysis of dry pellet in minimal volume of concentrated H2SO4. After reaction of the hydrolyzate with phosphorus-vanilin reagent the colour intensity of the reaction products was measured. The procedure described was sensitive and enabled to estimate lipids in minimal volume of biological material; in the lymphocyte fraction isolated from 2 ml of peripheric blood total lipids were measured with accuracy of 1-2 mg...
