BACKGROUND: Pregnant women with latent tuberculosis infection (LTBI) may develop active tuberculosis infection and could infect their neonates, which could impair the child's immune system due to infection-mediated immunological responses. In order to develop a preventative TB program in this study, we desired to understand the impact of calcitriol in LTBI pregnant women and immunological responses in neonates. PATIENTS AND METHODS: In three hospitals in Medan, North Sumatra, we implemented a case-control design with 84 pregnant women in their third trimester and their newborns...

Polyvinyl chloride (PVC) is commonly utilized as a food-contact surface by the food industry for processing and storage purposes due to its durability, ease of fabrication, and cost-effectiveness. Herein, we report a composite coating for the superhydrophobization of PVC without the use of polyfluoroalkyl chemistry. This coating rendered the PVC superhydrophobic, exhibiting a static water contact angle of 151.9 ± 0.7° and a contact angle hysteresis of only 3.1 ± 1.0°. The structure of this composite coating, consisting of polydopamine, nanodiamonds, and an alkyl silane, was investigated by utilizing both scanning electron microscopy and atomic force microscopy...

BACKGROUND: PET scan stands as a valuable diagnostic tool in nuclear medicine, enabling the observation of metabolic and physiological changes at a molecular level. However, PET scans have a number of drawbacks, such as poor spatial resolution, noisy images, scattered radiation, artifacts, and radiation exposure. These challenges demonstrate the need for optimization in image processing techniques. OBJECTIVES: Our objective is to identify the evolving trends and impacts of publication in this field, as well as the most productive and influential countries, institutions, authors, themes, and articles...

BACKGROUND: Many studies on multiple sclerosis (MS) reveal different prevalence and epidemiologic results. OBJECTIVES: In this study, we aimed to determine the epidemiologic profile of MS using official health records in Turkey. METHODS: Patients diagnosed with MS from the official health data of the Ministry of Health, representing the entire population of Turkey, were included in the study. Prevalence and incidence calculations were performed using the data on gender, age, year of birth, city of residence, and year of diagnosis...

OBJECTIVE: Infants who meet the screening guidelines for retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) based on birth weight and gestational age undergo serial ophthalmological examinations for its detection and treatment. However, <10% of patients require treatment, and less than half develop ROP. Poor postnatal weight gain has been reported to be a strong indicator of ROP development; however, the information regarding this is unclear. Therefore, this study aimed to determine the relationship between postnatal weight gain and ROP development in preterm infants...

BACKGROUND: Ischemia-reperfusion injury (IRI) poses a significant challenge for physicians, necessitating the management of cell damage and the preservation of organ functions. Various surgical procedures, such as vascular surgery on extremities, temporary cross-clamping of the abdominal aorta in aortic surgery, and the use of a tourniquet in extremity surgeries, may induce lower limb IRI. The susceptibility to IRI is heightened in individuals with diabetes. This study aimed to investigate the effects of fullerenol C60 and sevoflurane on mouse muscle tissue in a lower limb IRI model and to assess their potential in preventing complications arising from ischemia-reperfusion in mice with streptozocin-induced diabetes...
