No reports of longitudinal studies on phase angle (PhA) in lumbar spinal stenosis (LSS) exist, and its association with postoperative clinical outcomes is unclear. We longitudinally investigated PhA in patients with LSS preoperatively to 12 months postoperatively and determined the association between PhA and the Japanese Orthopedic Association (JOA) score. This prospective observational study included patients who underwent consecutive surgical treatments for clinically and radiologically defined LSS...

BACKGROUND: This study aimed to compare radiological features and short-term clinical outcomes between open-wedge high tibial osteotomy (OWHTO) and tibial condylar valgus osteotomy (TCVO), to provide information facilitating decision-making regarding those two procedures. METHODS: Twenty-seven cases involving 30 knees that had undergone OWHTO (HTO group) and eighteen cases involving 19 knees that had undergone TCVO (TCVO group) for medial compartment knee osteoarthritis (OA) were retrospectively evaluated...

PURPOSE: This study aimed to explore an ideal method for hydrogel spacer insertion by analyzing the efficacy and safety of our originally developed apex expansion method. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Overall, 100 patients with low- and intermediate-risk localized prostate cancer treated with stereotactic body radiation therapy were included. A hydrogel spacer was inserted in 64 and 36 patients using the conventional and apex expansion methods, respectively. For dosimetry, we trisected the rectum into the upper rectum, middle rectum, and lower rectum on the sagittal section of magnetic resonance imaging...

BACKGROUND: The validity of Doiguchi's pelvic tilt measurement method has not been proven. The objective in our study was to validate the method. METHODS: Our investigation included 73 total hip arthroplasties (THAs) performed using our cup placement procedure from July 2020 to November 2021. Pelvic tilt formed by the pubic symphysis and sacral promontory (PTPS ) in supine and lateral positions was calculated by two methods (the Doiguchi method and the digital reconstructed radiograph (DRR) method using a 3D computer templating system) based on the transverse and longitudinal diameters of the pelvic ring measured immediately before THA...

AIMS: The risk of postoperative complications after resection of soft-tissue sarcoma in the medial thigh is higher than in other locations. This study investigated whether a vessel sealing system (VSS) could help reduce the risk of postoperative complications after wide resection of soft-tissue sarcoma in the medial thigh. METHODS: Of 285 patients who underwent wide resection for soft-tissue sarcoma between 2014 and 2021 at our institution, 78 patients with tumours in the medial thigh were extracted from our database...

Commissuroplasty is a procedure that is performed to correct deformities at the corner of the mouth or oral commissure. Herein, we report a case of postoperative microstomia treated with commissuroplasty using split dry lips. In a surgical procedure, the dry lip was divided into orbicularis oris muscle cutaneous flaps and transpositioned into the cleft formed. The deformation of the corners of the mouth improved, and mouth opening improved enough to wear dentures. We believe that this method enables commissuroplasty that combines aesthetics with function...

BACKGROUND: Pleuroperitoneal communication (PPC) is a rare complication of continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis (CAPD) and often forces patients to switch to hemodialysis. Some efficiencies of video-assisted thoracic surgery (VATS) for PPC have been reported recently; however, there is no standard approach for these complications. In this case series, we present a combined thoracoscopic and laparoscopic approach for PPC in four patients to better assess its feasibility and efficiency...

METHODS: A prospective study was performed in blepharospasm patients treated with onabotulinumtoxinA. A smartphone (iPhone 6S, Apple) and custom-made software were used to record the eyelid movements for 3 minutes in a standardized manner. Optical coherence tomography of the tear meniscus was used to assess the tear meniscus area...

BACKGROUND: The risks of metal release due to fretting and corrosion at the head-neck junction and consequent adverse local tissue reaction (ALTR) have concerns in metal-on-polyethylene (MoP) total hip arthroplasty (THA). Although trunnions have become thinner in diameter to increase the range of motion, it has remained unclear whether this change affects metal release and ALTR in vivo. This study aimed to investigate serum metal concentrations and the prevalence of ALTR in MoP THA with a 9/10-mm stem trunnion...

Recently, the biallelic expansion of an AAGGG repeat in RFC1 was reported as a cause of cerebellar ataxia with neuropathy and vestibular areflexia syndrome. This mutation has also been reported in more selected nervous disorders, including pure sensory axonal polyneuropathy. Thus, the multisystem disorders caused by this mutation are now considered RFC1-related spectrum disorders. Here, we review the previous reports about RFC1-related spectrum disorders from the aspect of neuropathy.

Aortic valve endocarditis may be destructive and cause an acquired Gerbode-type defect. The use of biological material in the closure of the Gerbode defect and reconstruction of the aortic valve is essential for both early and long-term survival. Herein, we present a 62-year-old male patient whose Gerbode defect was repaired with bovine pericardium. Additionally, the aortic valve was reconstructed by using bovine pericardium with Ozaki neocuspidization technique.

OBJECTIVE: In the intermarginal split lamella with labial mucous membrane graft procedure to manage major trichiasis, the graft is usually sutured in the receptor bed using 6-0 polyglactin sutures. We aimed to compare the use of fibrin sealant to seal the graft to the receptor bed versus the conventional technique using sutures. METHODS: This is a retrospective comparative study of patients who underwent conventional intermarginal split lamella with labial mucous membrane graft or sutureless procedure using fibrin sealant (Tisseel, Baxter Healthcare Corp) between 2016 and 2021...

Background: Although head and neck reconstruction using free flaps has become a common procedure, flap complications remain a concern. This study aimed to analyze the risk factors of free flap complications and to identify the causes of these complications. Methods: We studied 97 patients with head and neck cancer with intraoral defects who underwent reconstruction using free flaps at Tottori University Hospital between 2011 and 2020. BACKGROUND AND AIM: The management of bleeding during endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD) is critical and related to the procedure time. We collaborated on a new image enhancement algorithm with parameter optimization for clinical use being developed by FUJIFILM Co. and processed white light image data offline to evaluate the effectiveness of this technology. This study aims to evaluate the clinical usefulness of this technology. METHODS: Eighteen video scenes of bleeding points from five gastric ESDs were selected and processed by the new image enhancement algorithm...

Hostile vascular disease can pose a challenge for transcatheter aortic valve replacement, for which the preferred access is via a common femoral artery. However, extensive peripheral arterial disease may also preclude traditional points of alternative access in some patients. Herein, we describe two patients in whom successful transcatheter aortic valve replacement was performed via direct innominate artery access.

INTRODUCTION: Patients with thrombocytopenia and chronic liver disease are at increased risk of bleeding during invasive procedures due to low platelet counts. Lusutrombopag, an orally active thrombopoietin receptor agonist, increases platelet count and reduces the need for platelet transfusion in chronic liver disease patients with thrombocytopenia undergoing a planned invasive procedure. The safety of lusutrombopag in patients with Child-Pugh class C chronic liver disease is not known...

Acquired von Willebrand syndrome (aVWS) develops with various underlying diseases. We herein report an individual with aVWS associated with mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue lymphoma in the lungs complicated by hyperviscosity syndrome, Sjögren's syndrome, and hypothyroidism. The use of rituximab caused remission of the lymphoma and hyperviscosity syndrome in parallel with the resolution of aVWS...
