The aim of our prospective study is to compare and analyze the results of two treatment methods of left-sided malignant colon obstruction: Hartmann's procedure (HP) and Resection with primary anastomosis (RPA). 90 Patients with diagnosis of left-sided malignant colon obstructions were enrolled in this study. The patients were assigned into two groups: Hartmann's procedure (HP) group and Resection and Primary anastomosis group (RPA). Several clinical characteristics were determined and compared between the groups: hospital stay days, duration of the surgery, postoperative complications (during 30 days after surgery) and mortality was assessed...

Background : The current use of endoscopic stenting as a bridge to surgery is not always accepted in standard clinical practice to treat neoplastic colonic obstructions. Objectives: The role of colonic self-expandable metal stent (SEMS) positioning as a bridge to resective surgery versus emergency surgery (ES) for malignant obstruction, using all new data and available variables, was studied and we focused on short- and long-term results. Materials and Methods: A systematic review with meta-analysis was performed...

BACKGROUND: Previous studies suggest that urgent colectomy and primary anastomosis with diversion is safe for perforated diverticulitis. Current guidelines support this approach. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to describe the use of urgent or emergent primary anastomosis with diversion in diverticulitis before the 2014 American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons guidelines and compare national outcomes of primary anastomosis with diversion to the Hartmann procedure...

AIM: Comparing the different possible surgical procedures and the results in urgent/emergency and in elective surgery for obstructing colorectal cancer. MATERIAL OF STUDY: From 2008 we operated on 238 patients affected by colorectal cancer, 136 complicated tumours, 115 obstructing and 19 perforated. 23 patients had right-sided and 92 left-sided obstructing colonic tumour, divided retrospectively in 4 groups. 18 decompressive colostomy; 32 two-stages procedures: 25 Hartmann's operations and 7 total colectomies with terminal ileostomy; 7 one-stage procedures, with defunctioning ileostomy: 4 total colectomies and 3 colonic resections with wash-out; 35 one-stage procedures with primary anastomosis+wash-out or milking...
