There is currently an urgent need for new anthelmintic agents due to increasing resistance to the limited available drugs. The chalcone scaffold is a privileged structure for developing new drugs and has been shown to exhibit potential antiparasitic properties. We synthesized a series of chalcones via Claisen-Schmidt condensation, introducing a novel recoverable catalyst derived from biochar obtained from the pyrolysis of tree pruning waste. Employing microwave irradiation and a green solvent, this approach demonstrated significantly reduced reaction times and excellent compatibility with various functional groups...

Bacterial wilt severely jeopardizes plant growth and causes enormous economic loss in the production of many crops, including tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum). Here, we first demonstrated that the roots of bacterial wilt-resistant tobacco mutant KCB-1 can limit the growth and reproduction of Ralstonia solanacearum. Secondly, we demonstrated that KCB-1 specifically induced an upregulation of naringenin content in root metabolites and root secretions. Further experiments showed that naringenin can disrupt the structure of R...

Legume nodulation requires the detection of flavonoids in the rhizosphere by rhizobia to activate their production of Nod factor countersignals. Here we investigated the flavonoids involved in nodulation of Medicago truncatula. We biochemically characterized five flavonoid-O-methyltransferases (OMTs) and a lux-based nod gene reporter was used to investigate the response of Sinorhizobium medicae NodD1 to various flavonoids. We found that chalcone-OMT 1 (ChOMT1) and ChOMT3, but not OMT2, 4, and 5, were able to produce 4,4'-dihydroxy-2'-methoxychalcone (DHMC)...

Additionally, the chalcone with an oxirane ring served as a fundamental building block for the synthesis of various pyrazole and imidazole derivatives, employing diverse nitrogen nucleophiles. All synthesized compounds were confirmed via analytical and spectroscopic analysis, such as FT-IR, 1 H NMR, 13 C NMR, and mass spectroscopy...

This paper introduces a unique and novel method for synthesizing thienyl chalcones using iron oxide nanoparticles (FeONPs) as a heterogeneous catalyst. It stands out as a rare example in the literature for the synthesis of these chalcones from 1,3-diketones and various aromatic aldehydes. The magnetic FeONPs employed as the catalyst bring several advantages, including their efficiency, affordability, and ecofriendly nature, making them an attractive choice for producing thiophene chalcones. One noteworthy aspect of this methodology is the utilization of mild reaction conditions, which greatly simplify the operational aspects of the reaction...

A series of "turn off" pH fluorescence probes with chalcone skeleton for basic system have been developed. The molecules emitted bright yellow fluorescence under acidic condition, resulting AIE coupled ESIPT characteristic and ICT process. What's more, the compounds exhibited excellent sensitivity and selectivity for detecting pH as a facile "On-Off" fluorescence probe, and the fluorescence of them were quenched with the ESIPT process interrupted under alkaline condition. Theoretical calculation for the related compounds also performed to verify the electron effect on photophysical properties and confirm the rational speculation on the mechanism...

Xanthohumol (Xn), a prenylated chalcone found in Hop ( Humulus lupulus L.), has been shown to have potent anti-aging, diabetes, inflammation, microbial infection, and cancer properties. Unfortunately, this molecule has undesirable characteristics such as inadequate intake, low aqueous solubility, and a short half-life. To address these drawbacks, researchers have made numerous attempts to improve its absorption, solubility, and bioavailability. Cassava is susceptible to mites, especially Tetranychus cinnabarinus . Secondary metabolism products such as flavonoids play an important role as antimicrobial metabolites protecting plants against biotic stressors including fungal, pathogen, bacterial, and pest defense. The chalcone synthase (CHS) is the initial step of the phenylpropanoid pathway for producing flavonoids and is the gatekeeper of the pathway. Until recently, the CHS genes family has not been systematically studied in cassava. Thirty-nine CHS genes were identified from the cassava genome database...

Ferroptosis is a recently discovered type of programmed cell death that is mechanistically different from other types of programmed cell death such as apoptosis, necroptosis, and autophagy. It is characterized by the accumulation of intracellular iron, overproduction of reactive oxygen species, depletion of glutathione, and extensive lipid peroxidation of lipids in the cell membrane. It was discovered that ferroptosis is interconnected with many diseases, such as neurodegenerative diseases, ischemia/reperfusion injury, cancer, and chronic kidney disease...

In this study, HMGR and CHS genes were cloned from P. tenuifolia, and their bioinformatics analyses and tissue-specific expression were investigated.
