In this study, we employed spatially aggregated population mobility data, generated from mobile phone locations in 2021, to investigate patterns of grocery store visits among residents east and northeast of Downtown Los Angeles, in which 60% of the census tracts had previously been designated as "food deserts". Further, we examined whether the store visits varied with neighborhood sociodemographics and grocery store accessibility. We found that residents averaged 0.4 trips to grocery stores per week, with only 13% of these visits within home census tracts, and 40% within home and neighboring census tracts...

BACKGROUND: Little is known about sexual minority adults' willingness to use digital health tools, such as pandemic-related tools for screening and tracking, outside of HIV prevention and intervention efforts for sexual minority men, specifically. Additionally, given the current cultural climate in the United States, heterosexual and sexual minority adults may differ in their willingness to use digital health tools, and there may be within-group differences among sexual minority adults...

Cardiometabolic syndrome is unfortunately widely prevalent in medically underserved areas with one possible non-pharmacological solution being food prescriptions from food pharmacies. Food prescriptions are defined as when a physician prescribes certain foods as a treatment for health conditions. There seems to be a promising future for food prescriptions; however, there is a huge literature gap. Given this lack of knowledge regarding this burgeoning practice, we decided to review the current state of food prescriptions used to treat cardiometabolic conditions in the US adult clinical setting...

Environmental epidemiologic studies using geospatial data often estimate exposure at a participant's residence upon enrollment, but mobility during the exposure period can lead to misclassification. We aimed to mitigate this issue by constructing residential histories for participants in the California Teachers Study through follow-up (1995-2018). Address records have been collected from the US Postal Service, LexisNexis, Experian, and California Cancer Registry. We identified records of the same address based on geo-coordinate distance (≤250 m) and street name similarity...

BACKGROUND: Ohio ranks 43rd in the nation in infant mortality rates (IMR); with IMR among non-Hispanic black infants is three times higher than white infants. OBJECTIVE: To identify the social factors determining the vulnerability of Ohio counties to IMR and visualize the spatial association between relative social vulnerability and IMR at county and census tract levels. METHODS: The social vulnerability index (SVICDC ) is a measure of the relative social vulnerability of a geographic unit...

IMPORTANCE: Private Medicare Advantage (MA) plans recently surpassed traditional Medicare (TM) in enrollment. However, MA plans are facing scrutiny for burdensome prior authorization and potential rationing of care, including home health. MA beneficiaries are less likely to receive home health, but recent evidence on differences in service intensity and outcomes among home health patients is lacking. OBJECTIVE: To examine differences in home health service intensity and patient outcomes between MA and TM...

BACKGROUND: Interventions focusing on epilepsy self-management (ESM) are vital for promoting the health of people living with epilepsy. E-technology and mobile health (mHealth) tools are becoming increasingly integrated into practice to promote self-management strategies for chronic diseases, enhance care delivery, and reduce health disparities. Management Information and Decision Support Epilepsy Tool (MINDSET), a bilingual decision support tool (available in English and Spanish), was found to be both feasible and effective in facilitating goal-based ESM in the clinic...

Formaldehyde (HCHO) exposures during a full year were calculated for different race/ethnicity groups living in Southeast Texas using a chemical transport model tagged to track nine emission categories. Petroleum and industrial emissions were the largest anthropogenic sources of HCHO exposure in Southeast Texas, accounting for 44% of the total HCHO population exposure. Approximately 50% of the HCHO exposures associated with petroleum and industrial sources were directly emitted (primary), while the other 50% formed in the atmosphere (secondary) from precursor emissions of reactive compounds such as ethylene and propylene...

OBJECTIVE: To characterize prevalence and severity of pelvic floor disorders (PFDs) in various healthcare settings and to examine unmet Health-related Social Needs (HRSN) among minority women. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Minority women with PFDs were recruited from our academic urogynecology clinic (UG), a general urology clinic at our institution's safety net hospital (SNH), and a community outreach mobile clinic (MC). Questions from the Urinary Distress Index-6 (UDI), Pelvic Organ Prolapse Distress Inventory-6 (POPDI), and Female Genitourinary Pain Index (GUPI) were used to identify patients with stress urinary incontinence (SUI), overactive bladder (OAB) and chronic pelvic pain syndrome (CPPS)...

Mobile mammography units (MMUs) can enhance access to breast cancer screening by providing convenient, cost-effective service, particularly for uninsured and underinsured women. However, prior studies indicate that acceptability concerns about quality and privacy, among other issues, may prevent women from utilizing MMUs. BACKGROUND: African American or Black (hereafter referred to as Black) adults who use cannabis use it more frequently and are more likely to meet criteria for cannabis use disorder (CUD) than both White and Hispanic or Latin individuals. Black adults may be more apt to use cannabis to cope with distress, which constitutes a false safety behavior (FSB; a behavior designed to reduce psychological distress in the short term). Although FSB engagement can perpetuate the cycle of high rates of CUD among Black individuals, limited work has applied an FSB elimination treatment approach to Black adults with CUD, and no previous work has evaluated FSB reduction or elimination in the context of a culturally tailored and highly accessible treatment developed for Black individuals...

Background Publicly-insured and uninsured individuals-many of whom are marginalized because of race/ethnicity, disability and/or sexual preferences-experience barriers to accessing evidence-based interventions for eating disorders (EDs). Additionally, EBIs have not been developed with or for diverse populations, exacerbating poor treatment uptake. Mobile technology is perfectly positioned to bridge this gap and increase access to low-cost, culturally-sensitive EBIs. Methods This study leverages a user-centered design approach to adapt an existing coached cognitive-behavioral therapy-based digital program and evaluate its usability in a sample of 11 participants with (sub)clinical binge-purge type EDs who are publicly-insured ( n  = 10) or uninsured ( n  = 1)...

BACKGROUND: Digital technologies allow users to engage in health-related behaviors associated with positive outcomes. We aimed to identify classes of US adults with distinct digital technologies access and health use patterns and characterize class composition. Data came from Health Information National Trends Survey Wave 5 Cycles 1-4, a nationally representative cross-sectional survey of US adults ( N = 13,993). The built and natural environment factors (e.g., greenspace, walkability) are associated with maternal and infant health during and after pregnancy. Most pregnancy studies assess exposures to environmental factors via static methods (i.e., residential location at a single point in time, usually 3rd trimester). These do not capture dynamic exposures encountered in activity spaces (e.g., locations one visits and paths one travels) and their changes over time. In this study, we aimed to compare daily environmental exposure estimates using residential and global positioning systems (GPS)-measured activity space approaches and evaluated potential for exposure measurement error in the former...
