OBJECTIVE: Introduction: Maternal mortality has always been the main problem in obstetrics worldwide. According to WHO, obstetric hemorrhage is one of the three major causes leading to mortality in 27% of all maternal losses. In Russia, hypotonic hemorrage is the leading cause of maternal mortality, whereas in the developing countries it is usually connected with traumas. However, today modern medicine rejects these ways as ineffective and time-wasting. Instead, doctors use other methods, such as compression hemostatic sutures, controlled balloon tamponade and modern uterotonic drugs...

Hemostasis is a complex and tightly regulated process whereby the body attempts to maintain a homeostatic balance to permit normal blood flow, without bleeding or thrombosis. When this balance is disrupted, due to trauma or underlying congenital bleeding or thrombotic disorders, clinical intervention may be required. To assist clinicians in diagnosing and managing affected patients, hemostasis laboratories offer an arsenal of tests, both routine (screening) and more specialized (diagnostic). In general, screening assays are used to screen for hemostasis-related disease or to monitor or measure the effect of anticoagulant therapy, which may be applied to treat patients with recent thrombosis or at risk of thrombosis...

Platelets play pivotal roles in hemostasis as well as pathological arterial thrombosis. The combination of aspirin and a P2Y12 inhibitor has become the mainstay therapy in the ageing population with cardiovascular conditions, particularly during and after percutaneous coronary intervention. A number of novel P2Y12 inhibitors has become available in the recent years, and they markedly vary in pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic properties. Perioperative physicians today face a challenge of preventing hemorrhage due to platelet inhibitors, while minimizing thrombotic risks...

INTRODUCTION: Fresh whole blood transfusions are a powerful tool in prehospital care; however, the lack of equipment such as a scale in field situations frequently leads to collections being under- or overfilled, leading to complications for both patient and physician. This study describes two methods for simple, rapid control of collection bag volume: (1) a length of material to constrict the bag, and (2) folding/clamping the bag. METHOD: Whole blood collection bags were allowed to fill with saline via gravity...

In this work, we describe a novel technique for producing biocompatible medical products with bioactive properties from the biodegradable polymer dibutyrylchitin (DBC). Materials produced by blowing out polymer solutions have excellent hemostaic properties and are easy to handle during surgery. Biocompatibility studies, encompassing hemostasis and the evaluation of post-implantation reactions, indicate that the biological properties of DBC depend on the molecular mass of the polymer. Lower molecular mass polymers are preferable for use in implanted wound dressings...

Access site complications are major source of morbidity following cardiac catheterization. Their incidence varies in the literature because of multiple definitions and methods of determining the presence of particular complication. The aim of this prospective study was to determine the incidence of access site complications following cardiac catheterization using arterial duplex ultrasonography. A total of 319 consecutive patients, who had cardiac catheterization underwent femoral artery duplex study 24 to 48 hours following manual hemostasis...

A quantitative assay for fluorescent heparin in a purified system and in plasma was developed (Piazolo et al: Semin Thromb Hemostas 20:227-235, 1994). The protamine microbeads (1.6 microns) showed a broad size distribution and a large standard variation in low concentrations. Our aim was to optimize these protamine microbeads for the measurement of fluorescent heparin. The following results were obtained: Paramagnetic protamine microbeads of different average diameters (0.8, 1.6, 2.8, and 4.5 microns) were synthesized by cyclocarbodiimide and tosyl activation...

The antigenicity of glycosaminoglycans and galactosaminoglycans is very weak. Accordingly, only a few reports on the successful production of monoclonal antibodies against glycosaminoglycans and galactosaminoglycans have been published. Antibodies have been raised against the heparinlike compounds heparan sulfate, chondroitin sulfate, and keratan sulfate. The production of heparin antibodies was reported. But further analysis showed that the antibodies were not directed against native heparin but against heparin conjugates or chemically modified heparins...
