A low-cost and facile method to synthesize highly crystallized VO2 (M1) particles is proposed, using carbon black as the reducing agent mixed with V2O5 nanopowders comparing two types of vacuum systems for the thermal activation. In a sealed vacuum system, CO gas is generated in the first reductive step, and continues to reduce the new born VO2, until all the V (+4) is reduced to V (+3), resulting in V2O3 formation at 1000 °C. In contrast, in a dynamic vacuum system, CO gas is ejected through pumping as soon as it is generated, leading to the formation of pure VO2 (M1) at high temperatures (i...

Supernumerary B chromosomes (Bs) are extra karyotype units in addition to A chromosomes, and are found in some fungi and thousands of animals and plant species. Bs are uniquely characterized due to their non-Mendelian inheritance, and represent one of the best examples of genomic conflict. Over the last decades, their genetic composition, function and evolution have remained an unresolved query, although a few successful attempts have been made to address these phenomena. A classical concept based on cytogenetics and genetics is that Bs are selfish and abundant with DNA repeats and transposons, and in most cases, they do not carry any function...

Commercial milks for infants and young children (CMIYC) received much attention during last years for their impact on the nutritional status, health and development of the new-born and babies. Among possible contaminants contained in these foods, biogenic amines (BAs) have rarely been determined although they can exert toxic effects in humans if ingested at high concentrations. Spermine, spermidine, putrescine, histamine, tyramine, β-phenylethylamine and cadaverine have been quantified in CMIYC samples by LC-UV after derivatisation with dansyl-chloride...

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is the most common form of dementia characterized by substantial neuronal loss and progressive brain atrophy. Animal studies have suggested that the process of adult neurogenesis might be altered at the earliest phases of disease onset. The relationship between AD progression and adult neurogenesis in the human brain is, however, not well understood. Here, we present a systematic review of the postmortem studies that investigated changes in human adult neurogenesis in the AD brain. We present findings from 11 postmortem studies that were identified by a systematic search within the literature, focusing on what markers of neurogenesis were used, which stages of AD were investigated, and whether the studies had any confounding information that could potentially hinder clear interpretation of the presented data...

Toxocara canis is one of the most common intestinal parasites in dogs and represents a highly infectious zoonotic parasite worldwide. Adult worms live in the bowel of dogs, and infections in puppies are commonly acquired transplacentally. The biology of the parasite and the commonly used diagnostic method, based on faecal examination, often prevent an early diagnosis of toxocariasis in puppies. Ultrasonographic diagnosis of intestinal ascariasis could be a feasible alternative method to diagnose T. canis infection in puppies during the prepatent period...

We collected 729 Hypanus guttatus from the northern coast of the state of Rio Grande do Norte (RN), of which 196 were used to estimate age and growth. Ninety-five were male (12.7 to 57.0 cm disc width; WD ) and 101 were female (13.0 to 88.5 cm WD ); females were significantly larger than males. Cross sections of vertebrae showed band-pairs ranging from 0 to >14 in females and from 0 to 9 in males. New-borns presented an opaque edge at birth in vertebrae without a birthmark. The average percentage of error (APE; %E) for the entire sample provided evidence that ages were repeatable...

BACKGROUND: Streptococcus agalactiae also known as Group B Streptococcus (GBS) is a major cause of disease in pregnant women and new born babies where it causes early and late onset disease characterised by sepsis, pneumonia and meningitis. Ten to 37 % of pregnant women in the world are colonised with GBS while intrapartum antibiotic prophylaxis has led to significant reduction in early onset disease. The increase in drug resistant microorganisms has become a major threat. Development of vaccines is still in progress so there is need for new and safer alternatives to treatment...

Strandings of live new-born West Indian manatees (WIMs; Trichechus manatus) are one of the main challenges for the conservation of this species in Brazil, particularly in the northeastern states. Congenital malformations (CMs) are rare in sirenians. We identified CMs in two of 19 stranded WIMs that were rescued, rehabilitated and subjected to complete pathological examinations in Ceará and Rio Grande do Norte States between 1992 and 2017. In case 1, dilation of the cerebral lateral and fourth ventricles with abundant cerebrospinal fluid (internal hydrocephalus), was diagnosed...

Carbonic anhydrase IX (CA IX) is the first carbonic anhydrase found to be associated with cancer that is over-expressed in a variety of human solid tumors. As a surrogate marker for hypoxia, the expression of CA IX is strongly upregulated in hypoxic tumors by hypoxia and hypoxia-inducible factor 1a (HIF-1a). In our pursuit of a CA IX-specific PET probe, we designed and synthesized a peptide-based CA IX imaging probe by the efficient click reaction of 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition of terminal alkynes and organic azides...

Cytomegalovirus (CMV), is the most common cause among congenital infections and is the most seen etiology in long-term sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL) and neurological impairment. Congenital CMV infection (CCMV) was reported in 0.15-2.2% of live-borne neonates in studies from different countries. A significant proportion of infected infants are asymptomatic after birth and might only be detected by routine screening methods during the new born period. The aim of this study was to screen the saliva of live-born neonates with areal-time PCR based method for the detection of CCMV in our hospital...

Osteogenic efficiency of pre-vascularization and non-vascularization decalcified bone scaffolds in bone defect repair was investigated. Twenty-one Sprague-Dawley (SD) mice were randomly assigned to three groups, and a bone defect area of ~1.5 cm in length in the thigh bone of the right posterior limbs of each mouse was made. Pre-vascularization decalcified bone scaffolds in vitro (group A) and non-treatment decalcified bone scaffolds (group B) were separately implanted. The defect vacancy was considered as the blank control (group C)...

The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) comprises 15-member states with an estimated population of 350 million. This account relates the present status of maternal, neonatal, and under-five-mortality to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) targets set for 2030. For each SDG indicator, progress observed was compared with that needed to meet the target (assuming linear progression). The time gap was calculated as the difference between the time remaining to the target year (2030) and the estimated time needed to achieve the target...

BACKGROUND: Bovine Viral Diarrhea Virus (BVDV) is associated with gastrointestinal, respiratory and reproductive diseases of livestock across the world that causes continuous economic losses in the cattle industry. This virus can establish a persistent infection (PI) in calves after the fetal infection, making BVDV positive catle carriers and primary reservoirs which will constantly transmit the virus to healthy and new-born animals. For this reason, the detection of the PI animals in herds is the first line of prevention of the viral infection...

BACKGROUND: Questions concerning the parent/ patient's autonomy are seen as one of the most important reasons for requesting Ethics Consultations (ECs). Respecting parent/ patient's autonomy also means respecting the patient's wishes. But those wishes may be controversial and sometimes even go beyond legal requirements. The objective of this case series of 32 ECs was to illustrate ethically challenging parent / patients' wishes during the first stages of life and how the principle of patient's autonomy was handled...
