Background Primary spontaneous pneumothorax (PSP) is a fairly prevalent disorder in emergency medicine. PSP most frequently affects tall, thin male smokers and is most prevalent during adolescence. Published literature contains a wide range of Primary Spontaneous Pneumothorax (PSP) recurrence rates, but there is limited information on the variables affecting recurrence. Objective To identify the descriptive features of PSP in King Abdulaziz Medical City, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. Methods This retrospective cross-sectional study was conducted in Surgery King Abdulaziz Medical City, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia...

The main cannabinoid receptor CB1R first shows expression during early neurula stage in chicken (Gallus gallus) embryos, and at early tailbud stage in the frog (Xenopus laevis) embryos. This raises the question of whether CB1R regulates similar or distinct processes during the embryonic development of these two species. Here, we examined whether CB1R influences the migration and morphogenesis of neural crest cells and derivatives in both chicken and frog embryos. Early neurula stage chicken embryos were exposed to arachidonyl-2'-chloroethylamide (ACEA; a CB1R agonist), N-(Piperidin-1-yl)-5-(4-iodophenyl)-1-(2,4-dichlorophenyl)-4-methyl-1H-pyrazole-3-carboxamide (AM251; a CB1R inverse agonist) or Blebbistatin (nonmuscle Myosin II inhibitor) in ovo and examined during migration of neural crest cells and at condensing cranial ganglia stage...

BACKGROUND: Percutaneous radiologic gastrostomy (PRG) is the method of choice for patients incapable of ingesting nutrition orally. The complications related to PRG are classified into major and minor complications. This article presents the prevalence of major and minor complications of PRG among adult patients admitted to King Abdulaziz Medical City (KAMC) in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia between 2017 and 2018. METHODS: This was a retrospective cross-sectional study, which included adult patients who underwent a new PRG intubation between 2017 and 2018 in KAMC in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia...

This review leads the 2023 Call for Papers in MHR: 'Cyclical function of the female reproductive tract' and will outline the complex and fascinating changes that take place in the reproductive tract during the menstrual cycle. We will also explore associated reproductive tract abnormalities that impact or are impacted by the menstrual cycle. Between menarche and menopause, women and people who menstruate living in high-income countries can expect to experience ∼450 menstrual cycles. The primary function of the menstrual cycle is to prepare the reproductive system for pregnancy in the event of fertilization...

Background Blenderized gastrostomy tube feedings (BGTFs) consist of pureed table foods and liquids that are administered as enteral tube feedings. Compared to commercial enteral formulas (CEFs), BGTF has been shown to have fewer side effects. Despite these results, apprehensions have been raised about microbial contamination, nutritional deficiencies or surplus, risk of gastrostomy tube (GT) blockages, and lack of consistency in clinical outcomes. The goal of this retrospective, prospective, 18-month-long study is to report the clinical and nutritional outcomes of GT-dependent pediatric patients who attended a multidisciplinary feeding clinic...

In this study, we aimed to compare the neurologic outcomes of OHCA patients managed with the King Laryngeal Tube (King LT) to the neurologic outcomes of patients managed with the iGel. OBJECTIVE: While the Malone antegrade continence enema (MACE) facilitates bowel movements in patients with spina bifida (SB) and neuropathic bowel, little is known about its long-term use. We aimed to assess long-term MACE use and potential risk factors for disuse. METHODS: All patients with SB who underwent MACE procedures at our institution were retrospectively reviewed. Main outcome was MACE disuse (no longer catheterizing the MACE for antegrade enemas) based on self-report on a clinic questionnaire, or medical record for patients last seen before introducing the questionnaire 5 years ago...

INTRODUCTION: Airway obstruction is the second leading cause of death on the battlefield. The harsh conditions of the military combat setting require that devices be able to withstand extreme circumstances. Military standards (MIL-STD) testing is necessary before devices are fielded. We sought to determine the ability of supraglottic airway (SGA) devices to withstand MIL-STD testing. METHODS: We tested 10 SGA models according to nine MIL-STD-810H test methods. We selected these tests by polling five military and civilian emergency-medicine subject matter experts (SMEs), who weighed the relevance of each test...

Introduction Surgical stabilization of rib fractures (SSRF) is an emerging therapy for the treatment of patients with traumatic rib fractures. Despite the demonstrated benefits of SSRF, there remains a paucity of literature regarding the complications from SSRF, especially those related to hardware infection. Currently, literature quotes hardware infection rates as high as 4%. We hypothesize that the hardware infection rate is much lower than currently published. OBJECTIVE: Much attention has been given to the influence of anatomic and technical factors, such as maximum abdominal aortic aneurysm diameter and proximal clamp position, in open abdominal aortic aneurysm repair (OSR). However, no studies have rigorously examined the correlation between site of distal anastomosis and OSR outcomes despite conventional wisdom that more proximal sites of anastomosis are preferrable when technically feasible. Agaricus bisporus is one of the most commonly grown edible fungi in the world. In December 2021, brown blotch disease (2% incidence) was observed on the cap of A. bisporus, growing in a mushroom cultivation base in Guangxi, China. Initially, brown blotches (1-1.3 cm) appeared on the cap of A. bisporus, which expanded gradually as the cap grew. After two days, the infection penetrated inner tissues of fruiting bodies, and blotches were dark brown. For the isolation of causative agent(s), internal tissue samples of the infected stipes (5×5×5 mm) were sterilized in 75% ethanol for 30 s, rinsed three times with sterile deionized water (SDW), then, mashed in the sterile 2 ml Eppendorf tubes, 1000 µl SDW was added and the suspension was diluted into seven concentrations (10-1~10-7)...

BACKGROUND: Procedural competency is expected of all emergency medicine (EM) residents upon graduation. The ACGME requires a minimum number of essential procedures to successfully complete training. However, data are limited on the actual number of procedures residents perform and prior studies are limited to single institutions over short time periods. Background To our knowledge, no studies have been done in Saudi Arabia to determine the risk factors of hospital-acquired pneumonia (HAP) among hospitalized cardiac patients. This study aimed to assess these risk factors. Methods A retrospective study was done at King Abdulaziz University Hospital (KAUH), Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. Five hundred hospitalized patients diagnosed with pre-existing cardiovascular disease (CVD) were included.
