Replacement of the toxic heavy element lead in metal halide perovskites has been attracting a great interest because the high toxicity and poor air stability are two of the major barriers for their widespread utilization. Recently, mixed-cation double perovskite halides, also known as elpasolites, were proposed as an alternative lead-free candidate for the design of nontoxic perovskite solar cells. Herein, we report a new nontoxic and air stable lead-free all-inorganic semiconductor Rb4 Ag2 BiBr9 prepared using the mixed-cation approach; however, Rb4 Ag2 BiBr9 adopts a new structure type (Pearson's code oP32) featuring BiBr6 octahedra and AgBr5 square pyramids that share common edges and corners to form a unique 2D layered non-perovskite structure...

A new approach to stable, low resistance inexpensive printed flexible conductive inks is proposed. Silver ink has been studied extensively and commercialized for applications in printed electronics due to the inherent high conductivity and stability of silver, even in particulate-based percolation networks processed at temperatures compatible with low cost polymer films such as polyethylene terephthalate (PET). Recent interest in flexible and even stretchable circuits, however, has presented new challenges for particle-based inks as mechanical strains can result in the opening of critical particle-to-particle contacts...

The photocatalytic performance of layered double hydroxides (LDH) is usually confined to the slow interface mobility and high recombination rate of photogenerated electron-hole pairs in material. To overcome the low photocatalytic efficiency, novel Ag2 O/Ag decorated LDH (LDH-Ag2 O/Ag) was successfully synthesized by depositing Ag2 O on the surface of LDH and then converted to Ag° nanoparticles in the right position after heat treatment. The as-synthesized LDH-Ag2 O/Ag composites were characterized by Powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), UV-visible diffuse reflectance spectra (UV-vis DRS), photoluminescence spectra (PL) and transient photocurrent (TPC) analysis...

Radiocesium-bearing microparticles (CsMPs), consisting substantially of silicate glass, were released to the environment during the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant accident in March 2011. Since the CsMPs were formed inside the damaged reactors during the accident, we investigate the inner structures of several CsMPs by transmission electron microscopy to understand the events within the reactors. Elemental mapping of the CsMPs shows a distinct radial distribution of Cs with a higher concentration near the surface of the CsMPs, implying that Cs was in a gaseous state in the reactor atmosphere and diffused into the glass matrix after formation of the glass particles...

In the past, common media for high-order harmonic generation (HHG) has been atoms and molecules. More recently, clusters, and nanoparticles have been introduced as HHG emitting media. Multi-particle media can enhance HHG yields but have more stringent requirements in determining the optimal parameters. Here, we demonstrate, for the first time, the effective application of 1-3 nm metal sulfide quantum dots (QDs) for harmonic generation in the 20 - 115 nm extreme ultraviolet range. We report on the syntheses, ablation of Ag2 S, CdS, and ZnS QDs, and HHG from laser-produced plasmas by using single- and two-color pumps...

Two-dimensional auxetic materials have attracted considerable attention due to their potential applications in medicine, tougher composites, defense and so on. However, they are scare especially at low dimension, as auxetic materials are mainly realized in engineered materials and structures. Here using first-principles calculations, we identify a compelling two-dimensional auxetic material, single-layer Ag2 S, which possesses large negative Poisson's ratios in both in-plane and out-of-plane directions, but anisotropic ultra-low Young's modulus...

A general one-pot approach is developed to synthesize a series of binary metal sulfide nanocrystals (NCs) including PbS, Cu2 S, ZnS, CdS, Ag2 S, and ternary CuInS2 and CdS:Cu(I) NCs. This synthetic approach involves thermal decomposition of the mixture of inorganic metal salts and n-dodecanethiol (DDT) without pre-synthesis of any organometallic precursors. In this method, layered metal-thiolate compound is formed at the beginning of the reaction and then this intermediate compound is decomposed into small particles, leading to further growth as the reaction time increases...

Facilitating the separation of photogenerated electron/hole pairs and widening the light-responsive region are crucial to enhance the overall photocatalytic performance of photocatalysts. To achieve this aim, here we have prepared Ag2 S/Bi4 Ti3 O12 heterojunction composite photocatalysts by assembling Ag2 S quantum dots onto the surface of Bi4 Ti3 O12 nanosheets. Transmission electron microscopy observation demonstrates that two types of Ag2 S quantum dots separately with size of 40-70 and 7-17 nm are uniformly assembled onto the surface of large-sized Bi4 Ti3 O12 thin nanosheets...

A photocatalyst with good electron-transfer property and wide spectrum response is of great interest. Herein, visible/NIR-light-driven Ag2 O nanoparticles (NPs) and UV/visible-responsive reduced TiO2 nanosheets (TiO2-x NSs) anchored onto reduced graphene oxide (rGO) forming Ag2 O@rGO@TiO2-x composites are synthesized in this study. The as-synthesized Ag2 O@rGO@TiO2-x composites exhibit a superior full solar spectrum (UV, visible and NIR) response, showing their potential for effective use of solar energy. Compared to single component (TiO2 NSs and Ag2 O NPs) or binary composites (Ag2 O@TiO2 ), Ag2 O@rGO@TiO2-x ternary composite has exhibited improved photocatalytic activity under UV, visible, NIR and nature sunlight irradiation and excellent photostability...

Reaction of the heterometallic polymer [Au2 Ag2 (C6 Cl5 )4 (OEt2 )2 ] n with 4 equiv of pyridazine leads to the new discrete complex [Au2 Ag2 (C6 Cl5 )4 (μ2 -C4 H4 N2 )2 (C4 H4 N2 )2 ] (1). Complex 1 is solvoluminescent, leading to drastic structural changes, depending on the coordination ability of the chosen solvent. Thus, the reaction of complex 1 with acetonitrile leads to a new Au(I)-Ag(I) complex of stoichiometry [Au2 Ag2 (C6 Cl5 )4 (μ2 -C4 H4 N2 )2 (NCMe)2 ] n ·2CH3 CN(2), while if the reaction is carried out with a noncoordinating solvent such as dichloromethane, complex [Au2 Ag2 (C6 Cl5 )4 (C4 H4 N2 )2 ] n ·CH2 Cl2 (3) is obtained...

Understanding the interaction between silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) and substances in aquatic systems enables Ag NPs to be better applied in science and industry. Moreover, it also could help us to determine the fate of Ag NPs and assess their hazards in aquatic environment. In this work, the interaction of Ag NPs with HCO3 - , ubiquitous ligand in aquatic systems, during long-term incubation was firstly studied and the possible mechanism was proposed. Results showed that the long-term incubation with HCO3 - led to the red-shifting of UV-vis spectra, the increasing of particles zeta potential (more negative), and the declining of the aqueous Ag+ concentration, as well as the decreasing in the toxicity of Ag NPs suspensions...

Currently, a large number of anti-tumor drug delivery systems have been widely used in cancer therapy. However, due to the molecular complexity and multidrug resistance of tumors, monotherapies remain suboptimal. Thus, this study aimed to develop a multifunctional theranostic nanoplatform for effective cancer therapy. Methods: Folic acid-modified silver sulfide@mesoporous silica core-shell nanoparticle was first modified with desthiobiotin (db) on the surface, then doxorubicin (DOX) was loaded into pore. Avidin was employed as "gatekeeper" to prevent leakage of DOX via desthiobiotin-avidin interaction...

Thermal conductivity is a very basic property that determines how fast a material conducts heat, which plays an important and sometimes a dominant role in many fields. However, because materials with phase transitions have been widely used recently, understanding and measuring temperature-dependent thermal conductivity during phase transitions are important and sometimes even questionable. Here, the thermal transport equation is corrected by including heat absorption due to phase transitions to reveal how a phase transition affects the measured thermal conductivity...
