A series of atomistic molecular dynamics (MD) simulations were carried out with a hydrated 1,2-dimyristoyl- sn -glycero-3-phosphocholine (DMPC) bilayer with the variation of glucose concentrations from 0 to 30 wt % in the presence of 0.3 M NaCl. The study suggested that although the thickness of the lipid bilayer dropped significantly with the increase in glucose concentration, it expanded laterally at high glucose levels due to the intercalation of glucose between the headgroups of adjacent lipids. We adopted the surface assessment via the grid evaluation method to compute the deviation of the bilayer's key structural features for the different amounts of glucose present...

Diabetes is a chronic health condition that is characterized by increased levels of glucose (sugar) in the blood. It can have harmful effects on different parts of the body, such as the retina of the eyes, skin, nervous system, kidneys, and heart. Diabetes affects the structure of electrocardiogram (ECG) impulses by causing cardiovascular autonomic dysfunction. Multi-resolution analysis of the input ECG signal is utilized in this paper to develop a machine learning-based system for the automated detection of diabetic patients...

AbstractSocial behaviors can be influenced by the genotypes of interacting individuals through indirect genetic effects (IGEs) and can also display developmental plasticity. We investigated how developmental IGEs, which describe the effects of a prior social partner's genotype on later behavior, can influence aggression in male Drosophila melanogaster . We predicted that developmental IGEs cannot be estimated by simply extending the effects of contextual IGEs over time and instead have their own unique effects on behavior...

PURPOSE: Currently, the rigid instruments used for laparoscopic radical resection of prostate cancer not only have the risk of damage to tissues, blood vessels, and nerves, but their limited freedom will also cause surgical blind areas. Soft robots are expected to solve these issues due to inherent flexibility, compliance, and safe interaction with tissues and organs. In addition, to achieve high surgical accuracy and provide precise guidance for surgeons, the navigation method should be studied for the soft robot...

Polymer cubosomes (PCs) have well-defined inverse bicontinuous cubic mesophases formed by amphiphilic block copolymer bilayers. The open hydrophilic channels, large periods and robust physical properties of PCs are advantageous to many host-guest interactions and yet not fully exploited, especially in the fields of functional nanomaterials. Here, we systematically investigate the self-assembly of poly(ethylene oxide)-block-polystyrene block copolymers and develop a series of robust PCs via a cosolvent method...

This paper proposes an advanced control approach to controlling a DC-DC buck converter for a proton exchange membrane (PEM) electrolyzer within the framework of a direct current (DC) microgrid. The proposed adaptive backstepping terminal sliding mode control (ABTSMC) leverages a physics-informed neural network (PINN) to accurately estimate and compensate for system uncertainty. The composite controller achieves finite-time convergence of the tracking error by combining backstepping control and terminal sliding mode control (TSMC)...

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Retrospective dose evaluation for organ-at-risk auto-contours has previously used small cohorts due to additional manual effort required for treatment planning on auto-contours. We aimed to do this at large scale, by a) proposing and assessing an automated plan optimization workflow that used existing clinical plan parameters and b) using it for head-and-neck auto-contour dose evaluation. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Our automated workflow emulated our clinic's treatment planning protocol and reused existing clinical plan optimization parameters...

We address the question of the time needed by N particles, initially located on the first sites of a finite one-dimensional lattice of size L, to exit that lattice when they move according to a TASEP transport model. Using analytical calculations and numerical simulations, we show that when N≪L, the mean exit time of the particles is asymptotically given by T_{N}(L)∼L+β_{N}sqrt[L] for large lattices. Building upon exact results obtained for two particles, we devise an approximate continuous space and time description of the random motion of the particles that provides an analytical recursive relation for the coefficients β_{N}...

Thorium-229 (229 Th) possesses an optical nuclear transition between the ground state (229g Th) and low-lying isomer (229m Th). A nuclear clock based on this nuclear-transition frequency is expected to surpass existing atomic clocks owing to its insusceptibility to surrounding fields1-5 . In contrast to other charge states, triply charged 229 Th (229 Th3+ ) is the most suitable for highly accurate nuclear clocks because it has closed electronic transitions that enable laser cooling, laser-induced fluorescence detection and state preparation of ions1,6-8 ...

Robotic automation is proving itself indispensable in the modern Chemistry laboratory, but adoption is slowed down by the technical challenges of implementing such systems. This paper reports on a novel adaptive gripper mechanism that can easily and reliably grasp cylindrical and prismatic objects of various sizes with limited clearance required. The proposed design exploits the inherent compliance of a cable that is driven to fully envelope the target object. The cable is run through a rigid finger, allowing the loop to be placed around objects with minimal clearance required and to provide support for the object once the grip is complete...

The synapse is a key element circuit in any memristor-based neuromorphic computing system. A memristor is a two-terminal analog memory device. Memristive synapses suffer from various challenges including high voltage, SET or RESET failure, and READ margin issues that can degrade the distinguishability of stored weights. Enhancing READ resolution is very important to improving the reliability of memristive synapses. Usually, the READ resolution is very small for a memristive synapse with a 4-bit data precision...

BACKGROUND: Particle mini-beam therapy exhibits promise in sparing healthy tissue through spatial fractionation, particularly notable for heavy ions, further enhancing the already favorable differential biological effectiveness at both target and entrance regions. However, breathing-induced organ motion affects particle mini-beam irradiation schemes since the organ displacements exceed the mini-beam structure dimensions, decreasing the advantages of spatial fractionation. PURPOSE: In this study, the impact of breathing-induced organ motion on the dose distribution was examined at the target and organs at risk(OARs) during carbon ion mini-beam irradiation for pancreatic cancer...

BACKGROUND: Exposure to obesogenic chemicals has been reported to result in enhanced adipogenesis, higher adipose tissue accumulation, and reduced ovarian hormonal synthesis and follicular function. We have reported that organotins [tributyltin (TBT) and triphenyltin (TPT)] dysregulate cholesterol trafficking in ovarian theca cells, but, whether organotins also exert lipogenic effects on ovarian cells remains unexplored. OBJECTIVE: We investigated if environmentally relevant exposures to organotins [TBT, TPT, or dibutyltin (DBT)] induce lipid dysregulation in ovarian theca cells and the role of the liver X receptor (LXR) in this effect...
