Percutaneous vertebroplasty is a minimally invasive treatment technique for vertebral body compression fractures. The complications associated with this technique can be categorized into mild, moderate, and severe. Among these, the most prevalent complication is cement leakage, which may insert into the epidural, intradiscal, foraminal, and paravertebral regions, and even the venous system. The occurrence of a postprocedural infection carries a notable risk which is inherent to any percutaneous procedure. While the majority of these complications manifest without symptoms, they can potentially lead to severe outcomes...

BACKGROUND: Global studies have observed a disparity in the use of complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) among diabetic patients. OBJECTIVES: To estimate the prevalence, types, and correlates of CAM use among patients with diabetes mellitus (DM) in Saudi Arabia. METHODOLOGY: A cross-sectional study was conducted among 1290 Saudis with type 2 DM aged ≥18 years. An electronic questionnaire was distributed through social media to collect data about patient demographics and DM-related characteristics, including age at DM diagnosis, DM duration, family history of DM, DM complications, DM medicine, and chronic diseases...

With their high volumetric capacity and electronic conductivity, sodium-selenium (Na-Se) batteries have attracted attention for advanced battery systems. However, the irreversible deposition of sodium selenide (Na2Se) results in rapid capacity degradation and poor Coulombic efficiency. To address these issues, cubic α-Mn2O3 is introduced herein as an electrocatalyst to effectively catalyze Na2Se conversion and improve the utilization of active materials. The results show that the addition of 10 wt% Mn2O3 in the Se/KB composite enhances the conversion from Na2Se to Se by lowering activation energy barrier and leads to fast sodium-ion kinetics and low internal resistance...

In patients with severe congenital factor X deficiency, spontaneous intracranial hemorrhage (ICH) is particularly frequent in early childhood. We describe a case of fetal death at 26 weeks due to massive ICH. Gene panel analysis of postmortem samples revealed homozygosity for a pathologic F10 gene variant (c.1210T>C, p.Cys404Arg), which impedes correct folding of the catalytic serine protease domain and, therefore, causes a significant reduction in FX levels. The parents, not consanguineous but of the same ethnic community, were found to be heterozygous for this variant and did not have any personal or family history of abnormal bleeding...

This study aimed to investigate the effect of a relaxation response induced by hypnosis on the mitochondrial energy production of immune cells compared to an everyday relaxing situation. Chronically stressed individuals (88% women) with at least moderate suggestibility were randomized to a hypnosis (20 min relaxation hypnosis; n = 20) or a control condition (20 min documentary; n = 22). Before and after intervention, peripheral blood was collected. The primary outcomes were mitochondrial respiration and density in immune cells measured by high-resolution respirometry and citrate synthase activity assays...

He pioneered the training of a new generation of modern physicians, the first generation of Turkish nephrologists, and the establishment of the discipline of nephrology. Turkish pediatricians closely followed these developments and tried to improve their knowledge, making an effort to study abroad. These physicians established pediatric nephrology departments in their universities, trained young pediatric nephrologists, initiated pediatric hemodialysis-peritoneal dialysis units, and realized renal transplantation in children...

BACKGROUND: One of the most common bacterial infections in childhood is urinary tract infection (UTI). Toll-like receptors (TLRs) contribute to immune response against UTI recognizing specific pathogenic agents. Our aim was to determine whether soluble TLR4 (sTLR4), soluble TLR5 (sTLR5) and interleukin 8 (IL-8) can be used as biomarkers to diagnose UTI. We also aimed to reveal the relationship between urine Heat Shock Protein 70 (uHSP70) and those biomarkers investigated in this study...

BACKGROUND: Alport syndrome (AS) is characterized by progressive kidney disease. There is increasing evidence that renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system (RAAS) inhibition delays chronic kidney disease (CKD) while the effectiveness of immunosuppressive (IS) therapy in AS is still uncertain. Nasopharyngeal cancer is a relatively rare cancer type, it is most common in southeast Asia and north Africa, it can be presented with nonspecific symptoms, making it challenging to diagnose. However, it remains a significant cancer to diagnose and treat early, as it can be aggressive and difficult to manage in its advanced stages. We report the case of a 48-year-old man who presented with isolated neck swelling, which was later found to be caused by multiple lymphadenopathies and suspected nasopharyngeal neoplasm...

Disposal of waste containing heavy metals into the environment is a major threat to human health and can result in toxic or chronic poisoning in aquatic life. In the current study, metal-resistant Raoultella ornithinolytica ( R. ornithinolytica ) was isolated from metal-contaminated samples collected from the Tanjaro River, located southwest of Sulaymaniyah, Iraq. R. ornithinolytica was identified by partial amplification of 16S rRNA. The uptake potency of heavy metals was assessed using inductively coupled plasma-optical emission spectroscopy (ICP-OES) and indicated that R...

The use of serotonergic psychedelics has gained increasing attention in research, clinical practice and society. Growing evidence suggests fast-acting, transdiagnostic health benefits of these 5-hydroxytryptamine 2A receptor agonists. Here, we provide a brief overview of their benefits for psychological, cardiovascular, metabolic, neurodegenerative, and immunological pathologies. We then review their effect on mitochondria including mitochondrial biogenesis, functioning and transport. INTRODUCTION: Distal renal tubular acidosis (dRTA) is a disease that may develop either primarily or secondarily, resulting from urinary acidification defects in distal tubules. Hearing loss may accompany primary forms of dRTA. This study aims to determine the characteristics of hearing loss due to different gene mutations in patients with dRTA. METHODS: Behavioral and electrophysiological audiological evaluations were performed after otolaryngology examination in 21 patients with clinically diagnosed dRTA...
