PURPOSE: To provide a foundation for clinical diagnosis, epidemiological investigation and intervention trials, we examined the reliability and validity of the American College of Rheumatology (ACR) 2011 and 2016 survey diagnostic criteria among Chinese patients based on the fibromyalgia severity (FS) scale. METHODS: In this study, 200 fibromyalgia patients diagnosed according to the 1990 criteria (1990c) were matched with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) patients based on age and gender...

OBJECTIVES: Fibromyalgia (FM) is a chronic syndrome characterised by widespread musculoskeletal pain associated with symptoms such as fatigue, sleep disturbances and cognitive impairment. Prevalence is higher in females but the application of the 2010/2011 and 2016 revision of the American College of Rheumatology (ACR) criteria reduced prevalence differences and the actual female:male ratio is approximately 3:1. Even if lately some studies have been conducted regarding FM gender differences, disease severity is still assessed using questionnaires, such as the Revised Fibromyalgia Impact Questionnaire (FIQR), designed and validated through a predominantly female sample...

BACKGROUND: The role of central and/or peripheral nervous system dysfunction is basically fundamental in fibromyalgia. AIM: The aim of this position statement on behalf of the Neuropathic Pain Study Group of the Italian Society of Neurology is to give practical guidelines for the clinical and instrumental assessment of fibromyalgia (FM) in the neurological clinical practice, taking into consideration recent studies. METHODS: Criteria for study selection and consideration were original studies, case-controls design, use of standardized methodologies for clinical practice, and FM diagnosis with ACR criteria (2010, 2011, 2016)...

OBJECTIVES: The revised Fibromyalgia Impact Questionnaire (FIQR) is a widely used fibromyalgia severity assessment tool that was introduced in 2009 prior to the publication of the American College of Rheumatology (ACR) preliminary fibromyalgia criteria in 2010 and its revision in 2016. In 2020, the modified Fibromyalgia Assessment Scale (FASmod) was published. The Polysymptomatic Distress scale (PSD) of the fibromyalgia criteria and FASmod include assessments of pain location severity and can be used for diagnosis as well as in non-fibromyalgia patients...

Background: Fibromyalgia (FM) is a common rheumatic illness distinguished by chronic pain, fatigue, cognitive problems, and functional disability. However, the differences between men and women have not yet been comprehensively studied, especially after the development of the last 2016 American College of Rheumatology (ACR) criteria. The aim of this study was to evaluate the gender differences in symptom characteristics, cognitive dysfunction, and disease severity in Egyptian FM patients considering both the ACR 1990, 2011, and the last 2016 ACR diagnostic criteria...

METHODS: Items requiring yes or no responses and relating to the most relevant clinical nociplastic pain (NP) features of FM were compiled by a group of expert rheumatologists...

INTRODUCTION: Recently, new sets of diagnostic criteria were proposed, including criteria by the ACTTION-American Pain Society Pain Taxonomy (AAPT) group and Fibromyalgia Assessment Status (FAS) 2019 modified criteria for fibromyalgia (FM). Here, we explored the performances of the AAPT criteria and modified FAS criteria for diagnosing FM compared to existing American College of Rheumatology (ACR) criteria. METHODS: We enrolled 95 patients with FM and 108 patients who had other rheumatologic disorders, including rheumatoid arthritis, systemic lupus erythematosus, osteoarthritis, and myofascial pain syndrome...

OBJECTIVES: As members of a gender minority, transgender individuals face many challenges. Many experience distress, depression, anxiety and suicidal ideation related to gender non-conformity and transphobia. Stress and trauma may contribute to the development of fibromyalgia (FM) syndrome, characterised by widespread pain and fatigue. The prevalence of FM among transgenders is not known. METHODS: Transgender participants were recruited at a specialised clinic. Questionnaires included the Widespread Pain Index (WPI), the Symptom Severity Score (SSS) and the SF-36...

Fibromyalgia (FM) is known a common painful syndrome and its frequency is increased in inflammatory rheumatic diseases. We aimed to assess FM frequency in axial spondyloarthritis (AxSpA) patients and age- and sex-matched healthy controls with the 2011 ACR FM criteria. We evaluated the association between receiving biologic disease-modifying antirheumatoid drugs (bDMARD) and presence of FM. 127 patients with Ax-SpA and 73 age- and sex-matched controls were included. Individuals were assessed according to modified 2011 ACR diagnostic criteria for FM...

Background and aims The ACR1990 criteria of fibromyalgia (FM) have been criticized due to poor reliability of tender points counting (TPC), inconsistent definitions of the widespread pain, and by not considering other symptoms than pain in the FM phenotype. Therefore, several newer self-report measures for FM criteria have emerged. The aim of this study was to translate the fibromyalgia survey questionnaire (FSQ) to Norwegian and validate both the 2011 and the 2016 fibromyalgia survey diagnostic criteria (FSDC) against the ACR1990 criteria...

REVIEW
Carmen M Galvez-Sánchez, Gustavo A Reyes Del Paso
Fibromyalgia syndrome (FMS) is a chronic illness characterized by widespread pain and other clinical and emotional symptoms. The lack of objective markers of the illness has been a persistent problem in FMS research, clinical management, and social recognition of the disease. A critical historical revision of diagnostic criteria for FMS, especially those formulated by the American College of Rheumatology (ACR), was performed. This narrative review has been structured as follows: Introduction; historical background of FMS, including studies proposing and revising the diagnostic criteria; the process of development of the ACR FMS diagnostic criteria (1990 and 2010 versions); revisions of the 2010 ACR FMS diagnostic criteria; the development of scales based on the 2010 and 2011 criteria, which could help with diagnosis and evaluation of the clinical severity of the disease, such as the Polysymptomatic Distress Scale and the FMS Survey Questionnaire; relationships of prevalence and sex ratio with the different diagnostic criteria; validity and diagnostic accuracy of the ACR FMS criteria; the issues of differential diagnosis and comorbidity; the strength and main limitations of the ACR FMS criteria; new perspectives regarding FMS diagnosis; and the impact of the novel findings in the diagnosis of FMS...

OBJECTIVES: The provisional criteria of the American College of Rheumatology (ACR) 2010 and the 2011 self-report modification for survey and clinical research are widely used for fibromyalgia diagnosis. To determine the validity, usefulness, potential problems, and modifications required for the criteria, we assessed multiple research reports published in 2010-2016 in order to provide a 2016 update to the criteria. Fibromyalgia syndrome (FMS) is a chronic muscle and skeletal system disease observed generally in women, manifesting itself with a widespread pain and impairing the individual's quality of life. FMS diagnosis is made based on the American College of Rheumatology (ACR) criteria. However, recently the employability and sufficiency of ACR criteria are under debate. In this context, several evaluation methods, including clinical evaluation methods were proposed by researchers. Accordingly, ACR had to update their criteria announced back in 1990, 2010 and 2011...
