OBJECTIVE: Determine the grade of agreement between the colangiopancreatography by magnetic resonance (CPRM) and the endoscopic retrograde colangio pancreatography (ERCP) in hospitalized patients by biliary lithiasis in a period of time in a reference hospital. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Type of study, retrospective evaluation of diagnostic tool, the size of the sample was calculated from the pilot simple and was 320 patients. We recolected 354 patients that urderwent both studies (CPRM and ERCP), to evaluate the correlation between both procedures we used Kappa variation...

OBJECTIVE: To find the causes of retrograde intrarenal surgery (RIRS) failure in renal calculi treatment and evaluate the efficacy and morbidity of remedial measures. METHODS: All the patients with renal stone who had undergone RIRS in the last two years were reviewed and the failure cases screened out according to operating records. RESULTS: Within the 132 patients, 19 RIRS procedures failed. The causes of failure included ureteral (42.1%), intrarenal (36...

Triterpenes have shown many beneficial activities in researches, but their separation and preparation usually require multiple methods. Following an initial cleaning-up step on the AB-8 macroporous resin, a preparative high-speed counter-current chromatography (HSCCC) with a two-phase solvent system comprising chloroform-n-butyl alcohol-methanol-water (10:1:7:4, v/v/v/v) was used to isolate and separate triterpenes from caculis of Schisandra Chinensis (Turcz.) baill. A total of 89 mg corosolic acid with purities of 98...

Laparoscopic common bile duct exploration (LCBDE) is generally performed using a four- or five-port technique. We report a unique technique of two-port transcholedochal LCBDE with T-tube placement. Twelve consecutive patients with common bile duct (CBD) stones underwent LCBDE through two entry ports, one homemade single port (Uen port) inserted in a 2-cm umbilical wound and one 5-mm subxiphoid trocar port. With the assistance of a 1.2-mm needle that was inserted through a right lower intercostal space into the abdominal cavity to facilitate the operation, two-port dome-down laparoscopic cholecystectomy, choledochotomy, choledochoscopic removal of ductal caculi, and T-tube choldochostomy were performed with conventional methods using standard laparoscopic instruments along with manually operated angled shafts...

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the surgical techniques and clinical effects of mini-percutaneous nephrolithotomy (mini-PCNL) in the treatment of un-hydronephrotic cata-staghorn renal calculi. METHODS: The clinical data of 46 cases (31 males and 15 females) treated by mini-PCNL were retrospectively analyzed. There were mono-renal caculi in 38 patients (3 patients were the isolated renal calculi) while the other 8 combined opposite side upper urinary tract calculi. The diameter of calculi ranged from 4...

OBJECTIVE: To determine the composition of caculi and the predisposing factors for stone nucleation and growth in children from two regions of Cameroon. METHODS: This was a cross-sectional study involving 21 children, 17 from the northern and 4 from the southern region, over a 6-year period. Data on age, diet, residence, clinical presentation, location of stone, and results of stone analysis were collated following a preestablished proforma. A computerized analysis of the data was carried out...

Several species of bacteria were found to form an intracellular crystalline material when grown in urine obtained from a subject with a history of infrequent renal calculi formation. The following species: Proteus mirabilis, Proteus rettgeri, Providencia stuartii, Enterobacter aerogenes, Enterobacter cloacae, Escherichia coli, and Candida albicans formed crystals of hydroxyapatite. Klebsiella pneumoniae, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Proteus vulgaris produced crystals of calcite -II. Several of these bacteria have been isolated from the kidneys of patients with renal caculi indicationg that microorganisms may be involved in the nucleation process during calculogenesis...
