Placenta accreta spectrum (PAS) is a severe complication of pregnancy associated with excessive invasion of cytotrophoblast cells at the sites of the endometrial-myometrial interface and the myometrium itself in cases of adherent (creta) and invasive (increta and percreta) forms, respectively. This leads to a high risk of massive blood loss, maternal hysterectomy, and preterm birth. Despite advancements in ultrasound protocols and found associations of alpha-fetoprotein, PAPP-A, hCG, PLGF, sFlt-1, IL-8, and IL-33 peripheral blood levels with PAS, there is a high need for an additional non-invasive test to improve the diagnostic accuracy and to select the real PAS from the suspected ones in the first-trimester screening...

More than three decades have passed since the publication of Lamendin et al.'s proposal in 1992. Over this time, numerous investigations have been conducted to assess the applicability of the technique in different populations with acceptable results in terms of estimation errors. The proposal by Lamendin and colleagues remains relevant today, and has made a significant contribution to adult age-at-death estimation due to its simplicity, repeatability, replicability, and high performance. Indeed, significant progress towards systematizing and strengthening the procedure has been reported in the published literature...

Third- and fourth-generation synchrotron light sources with high fluxes and beam energies enable the use of innovative X-ray translucent experimental apparatus. These experimental devices access geologically relevant conditions whilst enabling in situ characterization using the spatial and temporal resolutions accessible at imaging beamlines. Here, Heitt Mjölnir is introduced, a heated miniature triaxial rig based on the design of Mjölnir, but covering a wider temperature range and larger sample volume at similar pressure capacities...

The long-term clinical success of indirect restorations highly depends on their marginal integrity. The cement space is an element that might affect the marginal integrity, but it can be altered during the configuring of the computer-assisted designing/computer-aided manufacturing (CAD-CAM) restoration. However, there is controversy in the literature regarding the effect of the cement space on the precision of zirconia crown marginal adaptation. The aim of this study was to measure the vertical marginal discrepancies between different cement thickness settings for CAD-CAM monolithic zirconia restorations...

BACKGROUND AND IMPORTANCE: Nonpowder firearm injuries to the head pose major health risks, with retained fragments potentially causing harmful sequelae that require neurosurgical intervention. CLINICAL PRESENTATION: We report the case of 2-year-old girl who sustained an accidental gunshot wound to the head. She sustained a penetrating ballistic intracranial injury caused by a BB shot from a rifle. At presentation, she was neurologically intact with a punctate laceration on her left forehead...

This is a written summary of the oral debate presented at the International Society for Prenatal Diagnosis annual conference in Edinburgh in 2023. The topic under debate is whether noninvasive prenatal testing (NIPT) using cell-free fetal DNA should replace other screening strategies for the detection of fetal trisomies 13, 18, 21. There is no disagreement that NIPT is far more sensitive and has better positive predictive values for identifying trisomies 13, 18, and 21 than traditional screening approaches using biochemical markers and measurement of nuchal translucency...

BACKGROUND: Although the association between first-trimester increased nuchal translucency (NT) and chromosomal defects is well-defined, there is little knowledge about the importance of increased NT in fetuses with normal karyotypes. Hence, this study was designed to evaluate outcomes of normal karyotype fetuses with increased NT. METHODS: This observational retrospective study was conducted on 720 pregnancies with increased NT (>3mm) at 11 to 13 weeks of gestational age in Yas Hospital, Tehran, Iran, from 2016 to 2020...
