Hydrogen storage in MgH2 is an ideal solution for realizing the safe storage of hydrogen. High operating temperature, however, is required for hydrogen storage of MgH2 induced by high thermodynamic stability and kinetic barrier. Herein, flower-like microspheres uniformly constructed by N-doped TiO2 nanosheets coated with TiN nanoparticles are fabricated to integrate the light absorber and thermo-chemical catalysts at a nanometer scale for driving hydrogen storage of MgH2 using solar energy. N-doped TiO2 is in situ transformed into TiNx Oy and Ti/TiH2 uniformly distributed inside of TiN matrix during cycling, in which TiN and Ti/TiHx pairs serve as light absorbers that exhibit strong localized surface plasmon resonance effect with full-spectrum light absorbance capability...

Most photocatalytic and photovoltaic devices operate under broadband, constant illumination. Electron and hole dynamics in these devices, however, are usually measured by using ultrafast pulsed lasers in a narrow wavelength range. In this work, we use excited-state X-ray theory originally developed for transient X-ray experiments to study steady-state photomodulated X-ray spectra. We use this method to attempt to extract electron and hole distributions from spectra collected at a nontime-resolved synchrotron beamline...

The floatable photocatalyst at N2 -water interface allows the adequate supply of N2 reactant and the utilization of photothermal energy for photocatalytic N2 fixation, however, the presence of non-volatile NO3 - product poses a challenge to the stability as it easily covers the catalytic active sites. Herein, a floatable TiO2 /Bi/CC (Carbon cloth) photocatalyst was designed, in which the non-volatile NO3 - can be transformed to the volatile NH3 via the newly synergistic relay photocatalysis pathway (N2  → NO3 -  → NH3 ) between TiO2 (N2  → NO3 - ) and Bi (NO3 -  → NH3 )...

The controllable preparation of spherical micro/nano particles of various materials has been achieved via the technology of the laser synthesis and processing of colloids (LSPC) recently. However, there is limited in situ research on the evolution processes of nanoparticles in photothermal transient environments, such as solid-state crystal transformations and changes of state, which limits the understanding and application of LSPC. Photoacoustic (PA) signals are sensitive to the optical, thermal and elastic properties of the medium, and can be used to measure the thermal and spectroscopic properties of matter...

A new, simple method for preparing substrates for photocatalytic applications under visible light is presented. It is based on the preparation of a dense array of gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) by thermal dewetting of a thin gold film followed by spin-coating of a thin TiO2 film prepared by sol-gel chemistry. The photocatalytic properties of these nanocomposite films are studied by surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) following the N-demethylation reaction of methylene blue as a model reaction. This approach shows that the semiconducting layer on the AuNPs can significantly increase the efficiency of the photoinduced reaction...

Implant-associated infections are significant impediments to successful surgical outcomes, often resulting from persistent bacterial contamination. It has been hypothesized that bacteria can transfer electrons to semiconductors with comparable potential to the biological redox potential (BRP). Building on this concept, we developed an antibiotic-free bactericidal system, Co3 O4 /TiO2 -Ti, capable of achieving real-time and sustainable bactericidal effects. Our study demonstrated that Co3 O4 /TiO2 -Ti, possessing an appropriately set valence band, initiated charge transfer, reactive oxygen species (ROS) production, and membrane damage in adherent Staphylococcus aureus ( S...

A key role in lessening humanity's continuous fight against cancer could be played by photodynamic therapy (PDT), a minimally invasive treatment employed in the medical care of a range of benign disorders and malignancies. Cancerous tissue can be effectively removed by using a light source-excited photosensitizer. Singlet oxygen and reactive oxygen species are produced via the photosensitizer as a result of this excitation. In the recent past, researchers have put in tremendous efforts towards developing photosensitizer molecules for photodynamic treatment (PDT) to treat cancer...

Urease-powered nano/micromotors can move at physiological urea concentrations, making them useful for biomedical applications, such as treating bladder cancer. However, their movement in biological environments is still challenging. Herein, Janus micromotors based on black TiO2 with urease asymmetric catalytic coating were designed to take benefit of the optical properties of black TiO2 under near-infrared light and the movement capability in simulated bladder environments (urea). The black TiO2 microspheres were half-coated with a thin layer of Au, and l-Cysteine was utilized to attach the urease enzyme to the Au surface using its thiol group...

Herein, we demonstrate the size of TiO2 support governs the selectivity in photothermal CO2 hydrogenation by tuning the metal-support interactions (MSI). Small-size TiO2 loading nickel (Ni/TiO2-25) with enhanced MSI promotes photo-induced electrons of TiO2 migrating to Ni nanoparticles, thus favoring the H2 cleavage and accelerating the CH4 formation (227.7 mmol g -1 h-1) under xenon light-induced temperature of 360 °C...
