OBJECTIVE: To identify differences in neuroinflammatory gene expression in individuals with chronic orchialgia (CO) compared to asymptomatic controls. METHODS: Vas deferens, spermatic cord fascia, blood, and urine were collected from 9 men with CO at time of microscopic spermatic cord denervation and 7 asymptomatic controls at time of vasectomy. RNA was isolated and analyzed with the NanoString Human Neuroinflammation panel. Data were normalized, gene expression fold changes and enriched pathways relative to asymptomatic controls were determined...

Osteoarthritis (OA) is the most common form of arthritis, affecting 1 in 3 people over age 65 and women more so than men. The prevalence of OA is rising due, in part, to the increasing prevalence of OA risk factors, including obesity, physical inactivity, and joint injury. OA-related joint pain causes functional limitations, poor sleep, fatigue, depressed mood and loss of independence. Compared to age and sex-matched peers, OA patients incur higher out of pocket health-related expenditures and substantial costs due to lost productivity...

INTRODUCTION: Intussusception with the Meckel's diverticulum (MD) is a rare cause of chonic abdominal pain in the adults. We wish to present this first case of intussusception of MD within its own lumen without small bowel obstruction. PRESENTATION OF CASE: We report the case of a 27-year-old man who was admitted to the emergency room due to a diffuse abdominal pain. Abdominal CT scan showed invagination of MD. The exploratory laparoscopy revealed the presence of intussusception of MD within its own lumen...

The diagnosis and therapy of pain is routine in common practice of almost all clinical fields. Whilst acute pain may be controlled fairly easily, the treatment of chonic pain patients may be frustrating if conventional approaches for analgesia are chosen. Only a specialized and multidisciplinary procedure is beneficial for advanced stages of pain chronification. Precisely, an adequate treatment program has to consider biological, psychological and social aspects of chronic pain.

Geophagia, eating of earth, is a relative frequent practice in several countries and especially in the African and South American mainlands. In some cases, migrant people continue this practice in the host country. Geophagia has some positive effects, presumed or real, and several harmful effects with significant health impacts. We relate the history of young patient of Cameroonian origin who consults for chonic fatigue, abdominal pain and menorrhagia. Laboratory tests show a severe aneamia with iron deficiency...

Work hardening is aimed at a reestablishment of the potentials needed in occupational everyday life. Fundamental motor abilities, such as strength, stability, flexibility and persistence, are restored and merged into the everyday life so that psychological contents, such as fear avoidance behavior will be positively affected. The design of work hardening is interdisciplinary in the sense of a holistic approach to back pain. Handling the pain under load requires sophisticated treatment and the training demands a high degree of individual design...

BACKGROUND: Acupuncture is a frequently used but controversial adjunct to the treatment of chronic low back pain (LBP). Acupuncture is now considered to be effective for chronic LBP and health care systems are pressured to make a decision whether or not acupuncture should be covered. It has been suggested that providing such services might reduce the use of other health care services. Therefore, we explored factors associated with acupuncture treatment for LBP and the relation of acupuncture with other health care services...

PURPOSE: To determine if a very effective therapy for idiopathic orthostatic cyclic edema--dextroamphetamine sulfate--would alleviate symptoms of chonic pelvic pain of bladder origin/interstitial cystitis. METHODS: Two women with interstitial cystitis that had been refractory to various therapies were treated with dextroamphetamine sulfate (20 mg/day) without any other treatment. The diagnosis of idiopathic edema was made by abnormal water load test and interstitial cystitis diagnosed by elevated scores on the pelvic pain and urgency and frequency symptom scale...
