INTRODUCTION: This study aims to examine the long-term management of peritonsillar abscess and compare needle aspiration, incision with drainage, and tonsillectomy in terms of comorbidities, complication rates, and recurrences in the largest study cohort published to date. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective analysis of patients, both adults and children, who were treated for peritonsillar abscess between 2007 and 2019. Patient charts were analyzed to assess surgical treatment, infection and inflammation rates, risk of bleeding, recurrence rates, duration of illness, and sick certificates...

Mycoplasma hominis is a bacterium that colonizes the genital tract of some females and males, as well as their respiratory tracts. Although only two cases of deep neck infection have been reported, the associations between the onset and sexual intercourse have not been reported. A healthy 19-year-old female was diagnosed with a left peritonsillar abscess. The patient had sexual intercourse with a new partner, including oral sex, two days prior to symptom onset. It was not known whether the male partner had urethritis symptoms...

OBJECTIVES: To systematically review the literature regarding previously described peritonsillar abscess (PTA) drainage simulation. DATA SOURCES: PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, Ovid, and Cochrane. REVIEW METHODS: A search of the abovementioned databases was performed in August 2022 using the terms "peritonsillar abscess/quinsy," "incision/drainage/aspiration," and "simulation." No time restrictions were applied. We included studies that clearly described how their PTA models were built and underwent validation from experts and/or evaluation from trainees...

OBJECTIVE: In clinical practice, identifying abscesses in tonsillar infections is crucial for early therapeutic management. Diagnosis of a peritonsillar abscess is usually based on clinical symptoms. Complementary examination procedures, such as laboratory parameters and imaging, are available for confirmation. PATIENTS AND METHODS: A retrospective analysis was carried out of data for 752 patients who presented with acute tonsillar infection and were hospitalized between January 2012 and February 2021...

BACKGROUND: Peritonsillar abscess (PTA) is a severe deep neck space infection with an insufficiently characterized bacterial etiology. We aimed to reveal the bacteria associated with PTA applying next generation sequencing (NGS). Tonsil biopsies and pus samples of 91 PTA patients were analysed applying NGS method. RESULTS: Over 400 genera and 800 species belonging to 34 phyla were revealed. The most abundant species in both sample types were Streptococcus pyogenes, Fusobacterium necrophorum and Fusobacterium nucleatum...

BACKGROUND: Given the widespread prevalence of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), oral and neck examinations tend to be avoided in patients with suspected or confirmed COVID-19. This might delay the diagnosis of conditions such as Lemierre's syndrome, which involves symptoms resembling COVID-19-related throat manifestations. CASE PRESENTATION: A 24-year-old man without any underlying conditions was diagnosed with COVID-19 7 days before presentation. He was admitted to another hospital 1 day before presentation with severe COVID-19 and suspected bacterial pneumonia; accordingly, he was started on treatment with remdesivir and meropenem...

BACKGROUND: Peritonsillar abscess (PTA) is often seen as a complication of acute tonsillitis and is defined as pus retention between the tonsillar capsule and the peritonsillar tissue. The etiology and pathogenesis have not yet been fully elucidated. A connection between certain weather conditions and temperature fluctuations and the occurrence of abscesses in the head and neck region has been discussed for years. The question here is whether higher temperature fluctuations are predisposing for the formation of abscesses...

BACKGROUND: We investigated whether a short, 5-min magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) protocol consisting of only axial T2-weighted and diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) sequences can discriminate between tonsillar infections, peritonsillar abscesses and deeply extending abscesses in a retrospective, blinded, multireader setting. METHODS: We included patients sent by emergency physicians with suspected pharyngotonsillar infections who underwent emergency neck 3-T MRI from April 1 2013 to December 31 2018...

Lemierre's syndrome, also known as anaerobic post-anginal septicemia, necrobacillosis, and the "forgotten disease," is a rare manifestation. It is often presented with sepsis, sore throat, fever, neck pain, internal jugular vein thrombophlebitis/thrombosis, and septic emboli. The bacteria that are usually associated with the disease are Fusobacterium species, but it is also associated with Staphylococcus , Streptococcus , and other bacterial species. The diagnosis of Lemierre's syndrome is made based on evidence of septic thrombophlebitis, preceding oropharyngeal infection, and positive culture...

As there is currently no consensus on managing deep neck infections in pediatric populations, we report a case series from a large pediatric hospital. Clinical data of patients discharged from Istituto Gaslini-Children's Hospital from January 2014 to June 2020 with peritonsillar, parapharyngeal, or retropharyngeal abscess diagnoses were collected. A total of 59 patients were identified. Patients underwent surgical drainage in 47% of cases. Streptococcus mitis/oralis was the most isolated pathogen. Surgically treated patients did have larger abscesses compared to others, but there were no differences in the duration of hospitalization...

PURPOSE: Some patients require additional imaging following ultrasound (US) to definitively diagnose a peritonsillar abscess (PTA), delaying intervention and disease resolution. We seek to evaluate patient characteristics which may predispose to a secondary imaging requirement to diagnose PTA, in order to better understand ultrasound limitations and predict who will require additional studies. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Retrospective chart review of patients with an US for suspected PTA between July 2017 and July 2020...

BACKGROUND: Kawasaki disease (KD), also known as mucocutaneous lymph node syndrome, is an acute, self-limiting vasculitis of unknown aetiology that mainly involves the medium and small arteries and can lead to serious cardiovascular complications, with a 25% incidence of coronary artery aneurysms. Periton-Sillar abscesses are a rare symptom of KD and is easily misdiagnosed at its early stages. Infectious mononucleosis (IM) is a relatively common infection in healthy young patients with few complications. Here we present a case of severe IM complicated with extensive bilateral peritonsillar abscesses. Clinicians should be aware of this complication of IM in patients with persistent or progressive symptoms. Epstein-Barr virus is a herpes virus that causes infectious mononucleosis (IM) in young adults. Symptoms are usually sore throat, lymphadenopathy, fever, and malaise Sylvester et al. [1]. IM has been associated with complications such as hemolytic anemia, myocarditis, splenic rupture, thrombocytopenia, hepatitis, etc Sylvester et al...

Primary healthcare is the pillar of a well-functioning healthcare system. General practitioners (GPs) should have a broad skillset to cope with the various conditions they encounter in everyday practice. Ear, nose, and throat (ENT) cases are some of the most common reasons for seeking care. The study aimed to define the frequency and type of ENT disorders seen in the emergency department of a tertiary hospital in Greece. All patients examined by an ENT specialist in the emergency department setting, within a year, were recorded, as well as all referrals from private practice or primary care facilities...

The bilateral presentation of peritonsillar abscess is uncommon. Its management is controversial and it has been argued whether a quinsy tonsillectomy or an interval tonsillectomy should be performed. Here we describe the case of a 14-year-old boy with sore throat, trismus, and fever. He had bilateral tonsillar hypertrophy, convex arches, and soft palate edema. Computed tomography: bilateral tonsillar hypertrophy, with post-contrast enhancement, both with collection, edema with moderate pharyngeal stenosis...
