An erratum was issued for: Noninvasive and Invasive Renal Hypoxia Monitoring in a Porcine Model of Hemorrhagic Shock. The Protocol section was updated. Step 2.3.1 - 2.3.1.2 of the Protocol was updated from: Measure PuO2 in the bladder. Remove all air from the bladder by slowly squeezing the bladder while ensuring urine does not leak out. Place the tip of the luminescence quenching-based PuO2 sensor in the bladder via a cystotomy, similar to the catheter. Connect the fiber optic cable from the bladder sensor to the data collection device...

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to assess rates of palliative care (PC) involvement in the care of patients with malignant gastrointestinal obstruction (GIO) and its influence on interdisciplinary team involvement. BACKGROUND: Malignant GIO is an advanced oncologic diagnosis with associated poor prognosis. Data regarding PC and interdisciplinary team involvement in these patients is lacking. METHODS: We identified consecutive surgical consultations for GIO in cancer patients at a single institution from August 2017 to July 2019...

Among all industrial accident-induced diseases, musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) are most prominently observed among nurses. The physical load of everyday tasks involved in nursing work was assessed in this study using a developed risk index, whereby the physical burden was evaluated using the exposure duration and work intensity levels. This survey targeted nine small-, medium-, and large-sized hospitals in South Korea and categorized representative nursing tasks into six groups. The subtasks within these six categories (evaluated as high risk) included changing a patient's posture and assisting with walkers or wheelchairs, transporting/handling drug carts, bathing patients, replacing bedding, traction therapy, cardiopulmonary resuscitation and artificial manual breathing unit, and computer work...

Streptococcus suis, a gram-positive coccus, is recognized as an emerging zoonotic pathogen that causes serious infections in humans, such as bacterial meningitis and sepsis, with poor outcomes. The pathogen is known to be transmitted through the consumption of raw pork or occupational exposure to pigs. A previously healthy 38-year-old woman with occupational exposure to raw pork was presented to our emergency department with a clinical diagnosis of rapidly progressive septic shock. Peripheral blood smears detected chains of cocci inside granulocytes, which led to the early recognition of gram-positive cocci in short chains before the blood culture test results...

Background: The hydrogen sulfide (H2 S) and the oxytocin/oxytocin receptor (OT/OTR) systems interact in the central nervous and cardiovascular system. As a consequence of osmotic balance stress, H2 S stimulates OT release from the paraventricular nuclei (PVN) in the hypothalamic regulation of blood volume and pressure. Hemorrhagic shock (HS) represents one of the most pronounced acute changes in blood volume, which, moreover, may cause at least transient brain tissue hypoxia. Atherosclerosis is associated with reduced vascular expression of the main endogenous H2 S producing enzyme cystathionine-γ-lyase (CSE), and, hence, exogenous H2 S administration could be beneficial in these patients, in particular after HS...

Introduction: Cancer rehabilitation can be preventive, restorative, supportive, and palliative. The rehabilitation goals change as the cancer pathway alters. Following any treatment for head and neck cancer, a physiatrist plays an essential role in preventing various complications and helping patients to mitigate impairments and restore function, optimizing their quality of life. This support enabled the patient to return home to die and enabled him to achieve his most important goal, watching 'The Ashes' on television.Having specialist palliative care OTs in an acute setting has not been described...

Genetic deletion of 3-mercaptopyruvate sulfurtransferase (MST) is known to result in hypertension and cardiac hypertrophy in older mice, and is associated with increased anxiety-like behaviors. Endogenous hydrogen sulfide (H2 S) produced by MST in the mitochondria is also known to be involved in physiological and cellular bioenergetics, and its dysfunction associated with depressive behavior and increased cardiovascular morbidity. Interestingly, early life stress has been shown to lead to a significant loss of cystathionine-γ-lyase (CSE) and oxytocin receptor (OTR) expression in the heart...

The hydrogen sulfide (H2 S) and the oxytocin/oxytocin receptor (OT/OTR) systems interact in trauma and are implicated in vascular protection and regulation of fluid homeostasis. Acute brain injury is associated with pressure-induced edema formation, blood brain barrier disruption, and neuro-inflammation. The similarities in brain anatomy: size, gyrencephalic organization, skull structure, may render the pig a highly relevant model for translational medicine. Cerebral biomarkers for pigs for pathophysiological changes and neuro-inflammation are limited...

BACKGROUND: Peptic ulcers in pediatric populations are uncommon and can present with upper gastrointestinal bleeding and shock on presentation. An endoscopy is done initially to identify bleeding source. However, definitive treatment is achieved with angiography. The use of coiling is effective in achieving hemorrhagic control in duodenal ulcers or gastric ulcers, particularly in adults. However, the use in pediatric populations is unknown. We present a case of peptic ulcer disease treated with a gastroduodenal artery coil in a pediatric patient that has never been reported in the literature...

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Angio-embolisation in trauma is a relatively new technique that is gaining popularity and recognition in identifying and arresting bleeding in trauma patients. We studied the possibility whether angio-embolisation using the Digital Subtraction Angiography (DSA), in the operating theatre (OT) could achieve successful haemostasis in trauma patients. We further studied the feasibility of using this technique as part of trauma resuscitation/damage control. METHODS: A retrospective study of trauma patients, with Injury Severity Score (ISS ≥ 9), admitted to Tan Tock Seng Hospital (TTSH) from January 2004 to December 2008 was done...

INTRODUCTION AND AIMS: Acute traumatic coagulopathy is observed in 10-25% of patients post major trauma and its management forms an integral part of haemostatic resuscitation. The identification and treatment of this coagulopathy is difficult and there is uncertainty regarding optimal therapeutic guidelines during the early phases of trauma resuscitation. This study aimed to examine the association between acute coagulopathy and early deaths post major trauma. METHODS: A retrospective review of data over a 5 year period was performed to determine the associations between variables considered to contribute to mortality for adult major trauma patients (Injury Severity Score (ISS)>15) receiving blood transfusions as part of their initial resuscitation...

Physical and rehabilitation medicine (PRM) specialists have an important role in the clinical care of patients during the acute phase of a disabling health condition. This phase is defined as once definitive care or resuscitation has taken place and a patient's need to stay in hospital as an inpatient is primarily for PRM services for rehabilitation. This paper describes 4 options for the delivery of services for people, who continue to require to be inpatients and who will benefit from PRM interventions. These are described, along with their clear benefits during the acute phase of a health condition...
