BACKGROUND: Shared genetic and environmental factors suggest that family relationships are important predictors of obesity-related behaviors, yet little is known about how siblings influence physical activity and sedentary behaviors. This study examined physical activity and sedentary behavior between sibling dyads across summer and fall time points and determined if birth order and gender modify the relationship between sibling behaviors. METHODS: Mexican-heritage families residing in colonias along the United States-Mexico border were recruited using promotoras de salud to participate in summer and school year surveys...

The frequency distributions of cystic fibrosis variants are heterogeneous in Ecuador because of the genetic admixture of its population. The aim of this study was to identify disease-causing variants among Ecuadorian cystic fibrosis (CF) patients by next-generation sequencing (NGS) of the entire cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator (CFTR) gene. The results showed an approximation of the frequencies of pathogenic variants in the population under study and an optimal mutation panel for routine first-line CF molecular diagnosis...

The Follicle-Stimulating Hormone plays an important role in the regulation of gametogenesis. It is synthesized and secreted as a family of glycoforms with differing oligosaccharide structure, biological action, and half-life. The presence of these oligosaccharides is absolutely necessary for the full expression of hormone bioactivity at the level of the target cell. The endocrine milieu modulates the glycosylation of this hormone. During male sexual development a progressive increase in FSH sialylation and in the proportion of glycoforms bearing complex oligosaccharides are the main features in this physiological condition...

A Late Cretaceous-aged multi-taxon nesting site from Romania preserved in three dimensions reveals the earliest example of nest site sharing yet known from the vertebrate fossil record. Eggshell and osteological evidence combined in this single accumulation demonstrate that at least four vertebrate taxa including enantiornithine birds and another avian of indeterminate affinities as well as crocodylomorphs and gekkotan squamates nested together in the same place. Colonial nesting in enantiornithines was previously described from this site; here, we present the first fossil evidence that other vertebrates also nested in the same place, perhaps exploiting the presence of the large bird colony...

To optimize fitness, pathogens selectively activate their virulence program upon host entry. Here, we report that the facultative intracellular bacterium Listeria monocytogenes exploits exogenous oligopeptides, a ubiquitous organic N source, to sense the environment and control the activity of its virulence transcriptional activator, PrfA. Using a genetic screen in adsorbent-treated (PrfA-inducing) medium, we found that PrfA is functionally regulated by the balance between activating and inhibitory nutritional peptides scavenged via the Opp transport system...

Half of the world's population has internet access. In principle, researchers are no longer limited to subjects they can recruit into the laboratory. Any study that can be run on a computer or mobile device can be run with nearly any demographic anywhere in the world, and in large numbers. This has allowed scientists to effectively run hundreds of experiments at once. Despite their transformative power, such studies remain rare for practical reasons: the need for sophisticated software, the difficulty of recruiting so many subjects, and a lack of research paradigms that make effective use of their large amounts of data, due to such realities as that they require sophisticated software in order to run effectively...

Immune defense is a key feature in the life history of organisms, expensive to maintain, highly regulated by individuals and exposed to physiological and evolutionary trade-offs. In chelicerates, relatively scarce are the studies that relate postcopulatory mechanisms and immune response parameters. This work makes an approximation to the female's immunological consequences produced after the placement of a foreign body in the genitalia of three scorpions species, two species that normally receive genital plugs during mating (Urophonius brachycentrus and U...

The Y chromosome behaves as a single locus. Its genetic information is useful in forensic casework, deficiency kinship testing, and population genetics studies. Continuous increases of loci number within commercial kits forced modification of worldwide reference databases. In Pan American countries, like Argentina, diverse parental ethnic groups contributed to the extant admixed urban populations. We report 509 additional haplotypes of 23 Y-STRs from donors inhabiting urban areas of six Argentinean provinces: Buenos Aires, Santiago del Estero, Santa Cruz, Rio Negro, Santa Fe, and Formosa...

Maintenance of intracellular redox homeostasis is critical for cell survival, proliferation, differentiation, and signaling. In this regard, major changes in the intracellular redox milieu may lead to cell death whereas subtle increases in the level of certain oxidizing species may act as signals that regulate a plethora of cellular processes. Redox-sensitive variants of green fluorescent proteins (roGFP2 and rxYFP) were developed and proved useful to monitor intracellular redox changes in a non-invasive and online manner...

Propolis samples from north-west Argentina (Amaicha del Valle, Tucumán,) were evaluated by palynology, FT-IR spectra, and RP-HPTLC. In addition, the volatile fraction was studied by HS-SPME-GC-MS. The botanical species most visited by Apis mellifera L. near the apiaries were collected and their RP-HPTLC extracts profiles were compared with propolis samples. In addition, GC-MS was performed for volatile compounds from Zuccagnia punctata Cav. (Fabaceae). FT-IR spectra and RP-HPTLC fingerprints of propolis samples showed similar profiles...

MINI: Low continuous total lesion glycolysis value, but not low maximum standardized uptake value, was associated with cure (odds ratio 0.70, 95% confidence interval 0.54-0.92) in patients with localized esophageal adenocarcinoma who received definitive chemoradiation. Baseline positron emission tomography parameters can help identify patients who are cured. OBJECTIVE: We aimed to determine whether tumor metabolism could be prognostic of cure in L-EAC patients who receive definitive chemoradiation...

The Robert Wood Johnson Foundations' Culture of Health represents a national call to ensure everyone living in the United States can have a healthy life. This article discusses how organizations outside of the health care sector can participate in creating a Culture of Health by using a nonprofit organization (Little Village Environmental Justice Organization) as an example. The organization's role in policy creation concerning cross-sector partnerships and governance to create equitable communities was of primary importance to this article...

In developing organisms, spatially prescribed cell identities are thought to be determined by the expression levels of multiple genes. Quantitative tests of this idea, however, require a theoretical framework capable of exposing the rules and precision of cell specification over developmental time. We use the gap gene network in the early fly embryo as an example to show how expression levels of the four gap genes can be jointly decoded into an optimal specification of position with 1% accuracy. The decoder correctly predicts, with no free parameters, the dynamics of pair-rule expression patterns at different developmental time points and in various mutant backgrounds...

The aim of this study was to know the biodiversity of total microorganisms contained in two polychlorinated biphenyl-contaminated aged soils and evaluate the strategies of bioaugmentation and biostimulation to biodegrade the biphenyls. Besides, the aerobic cultivable microorganisms were isolated and their capacity to biodegrade a commercial mixture of six congeners of biphenyls was evaluated. Biodiversity of contaminated soils was dominated by Actinobacteria (42.79%) and Firmicutes (42.32%) phyla, and others in smaller proportions such as Proteobacteria, Gemmatimonadetes, Chloroflexi, and Bacteroidetes...

Little is known about the mechanisms through which routine outcome monitoring (ROM) influences psychotherapy outcomes. In this secondary analysis of data from a randomized clinical trial (Brattland et al., 2018), we investigated whether the working alliance mediated the effect of the Partners for Change Outcome Monitoring System (PCOMS), a ROM system that provides session-by-session feedback on clients' well-being and the alliance. Adult individuals (N = 170) referred for hospital-based outpatient mental health treatment were randomized to individual psychotherapy either with the PCOMS ROM system, or without (treatment as usual [TAU])...

Pleomorphic adenoma is the most benign tumor of the salivary glands. It can undergo a malignant transformation to carcinoma and metastasize to distant organs, sometimes it can metastasize as a benign tumor. We present the case of an 82 years old male with hepatic lesion detected by ultrasound in routine urologic follow-up. CT scan revealed a solid image placed in segments V-VI-VII of the liver. A CT guided fine needle biopsy was made. Pathologic analysis reported a pleomorphic salivary adenoma metastasizing in the liver...

Vaccination is as one of the most beneficial biopharmaceutical interventions against pathogens due to its ability to induce adaptive immunity through targeted activation of the immune system. Each vaccine needs a tailor-made set of tests in order to monitor its quality throughout the development and manufacturing. The analysis of the conformational state of protein nanoparticles is one of the key steps in vaccine quality control. The enzyme lumazine synthase from Brucella spp. (BLS) acts as a potent oral and systemic immunogen...
