BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Stratum corneum acidification is a newer strategy in management of inflammatory dermatoses; acidifying emollients are normally used for that purpose. However, a decrease in pH of the skin is commonly connected to an increase in irritation. The aim of this study was to investigate whether lactobionic acid (LA), cosmeceutical active and "superacid" belonging to the class of alpha-hydroxy acids (AHAs), could decrease pH of skin surface without irritation...

The rapid conversion of Southeast Asian lowland rainforests into monocultures calls for the development of rapid methods for species identification to support ecological research and sustainable land-use management. Here, we investigated the utilization of DNA barcodes for identifying flowering plants from Sumatra, Indonesia. A total of 1,207 matK barcodes (441 species) and 2,376 rbcL barcodes (750 species) were successfully generated. The barcode effectiveness is assessed using four approaches: (a) comparison between morphological and molecular identification results, (b) best-close match analysis with TaxonDNA, (c) barcoding gap analysis, and (d) formation of monophyletic groups...

Apigenin (APG) is a poorly soluble bioactive compound/nutraceutical which shows poor bioavailability upon oral administration. Hence, the objective of this research work was to develop APG solid dispersions (SDs) using different techniques with the expectation to obtain improvement in its in vitro dissolution rate and in vivo bioavailability upon oral administration. Different SDs of APG were prepared by microwave, melted and kneaded technology using pluronic-F127 (PL) as a carrier. Prepared SDs were characterized using "thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), Fourier transform infra-red (FTIR) spectrometer, powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM)"...

BACKGROUND: Significant numbers of variants detected in cancer patients are often left labeled only as variants of unknown significance (VUS). In order to expand precision medicine to a wider population, we need to extend our knowledge of pathogenicity and drug response in the context of VUS's. METHODS: In this study, we analyzed variants from AACR Project GENIE Consortium APG (Cancer Discov 7:818-831, 2017) and compared them to the COSMIC database Forbes et al...

Astelia pumila (G.Forst.) Gaudich. (Asteliaceae, Asparagales) is a major element of West Patagonian cushion peat bog vegetation. With the aim to identify appropriate chloroplast markers for the use in a phylogeographic study, the complete chloroplast genomes of five A. pumila accessions from almost the entire geographical range of the species were assembled and screened for variable positions. The chloroplast genome sequence was obtained via a mapping approach, using Eustrephus latifolius (Asparagaceae) as a reference...

The effects of amphiphilic O/W emulsions, stabilized by the alkyl polyglycoside (APG) or cholesterol-grafted sodium alginate (CSAD)/APG systems, on lambda-cyhalothrin adsorption/desorption mechanisms on natural soil minerals (i.e., illite and kaolinite) were investigated. Sorption and desorption of lambda-cyhalothrin onto soil minerals was studied via batch equilibration to give insight into the adsorption equilibrium, kinetics, and thermodynamics of lambda-cyhalothrin adsorption onto minerals. The results indicate the following: (i) The adsorption processes for the APG system and CSAD/APG system include: rapid adsorption, slow adsorption, and adsorption equilibrium...

High, nearly 100%, yield synthesis of ammonium peroxogermanate (APG), (NH4 )6 [Ge6 (μ-OO)6 (μ-O)6 (OH)6 ]·6H2 O, is presented, and its crystal structure is determined by single crystal X-ray study. It comprises centrosymmetric hexanuclear peroxogermanate anions [Ge6 (μ-OO)6 (μ-O)6 (OH)6 ]6- with six μ-oxo- and six μ-peroxo groups forming negatively charged layers. The space between these layers is filled by ammonium cations and water molecules, forming a highly stable structure due to hydrogen bonding...

Herein, oil-in-water high internal phase emulsions (HIPEs) were stabilized by lignin from different technical resources with the assistance of alkyl polyglycoside (APG) using an ultrasonic cavitation method. The results showed that the amphiphilicity of lignin determined the formation of HIPEs. Microscopic and rheological characterization indicated that the molecular weight and concentration of lignin, the APG dosage and the oil/water ratio had important influences on the microstructure and stability of the HIPEs...

The response of fluorescent ion probes to ions is affected by intracellular environment. To properly calibrate them, intracellular and extracellular concentrations of the measured ion must be made equal. In the first, computational, part of this work, we show, using the example of potassium, that the two requirements for ion equilibration are complete dissipation of membrane potential and high membrane permeability for both potassium and sodium. In the second part, we tested the ability of various ionophores to achieve potassium equilibration in Jurkat and U937 cells and found a combination of valinomycin, nigericin, gramicidin and ouabain to be the most effective...

The inhibitor of apoptosis protein ( IAP ) genes are frequently overexpressed in malignancies. Second mitochondria-derived activator of caspase (SMAC) mimetics, which target IAPs, have potential to trigger cancer cell death and sensitize tumor cells to cytotoxic therapy. The aim of this study was to investigate the anti-tumor potential of a novel bivalent SMAC mimetic, APG-1387, in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). The mRNA and protein expressions of IAPs, including cellular IAPs (cIAP1 and cIAP2) and X chromosome-linked IAP (XIAP), were increased in HCC tumors compared with normal liver tissue...

The biodegradation of benz[α]anthracene (BaA), which was a high-molecule-weight PAH, was enhanced via a combination of alkaline and alkyl polyglucosides (APG) treatment during waste activated sludge (WAS) anaerobic fermentation. The biodegradation efficiency of BaA was increased from 14.1% in the control to 30.2 and 47.8% in pH 10 and pH 10 & APG reactors, respectively. Mechanism investigations found that the alkaline and APG treatments stimulated the processes of BaA desorption from sludge and transfer/entry into microorganisms, and ultimately improved the BaA bioavailability...

In this work, we demonstrate an accelerometric patch probe with two microelectromechanical accelerometer sensors for local pulse wave velocity (PWV) measurement from the carotid artery. Dual acceleration plethysmogram (APG) signals were acquired from a small section of the artery by keeping the sensors at 32 mm apart. A custom analog front-end circuit (inter-channel delay $< 0.15$ ms) was used for reliable signal acquisition. Simultaneously acquired dual APG signals were processed in real-time and local PWV was evaluated in a beat-by-beat manner...

Managing municipal green waste is a challenge to municipalities, partly because of the slow rate of decomposition of green waste during composting due to its high lignin and cellulose contents. Hence, this study evaluated the effect of alkyl polyglycoside (APG), a biosurfactant, and the earthworm Eisenia fetida on the composting process. Addition of APG and E. fetida significantly increased total bacteria, cellulolytic fungi, phosphate solubilizing bacteria and nitrogen fixing bacteria populations, and the activities of cellulase, urease and alkaline phosphatase in composts as compared with the control...

JPEG images captured in poor lighting conditions suffer from both low luminance contrast and coarse quantization artifacts due to lossy compression. Performing dequantization and contrast enhancement in separate back-to-back steps would amplify the residual compression artifacts, resulting in low visual quality. Leveraging on recent development in graph signal processing (GSP), we propose to jointly dequantize and contrast-enhance such images in a single graph-signal restoration framework. Specifically, we separate each observed pixel patch into illumination and reflectance via Retinex theory, where we define generalized smoothness prior and signed graph smoothness prior according to their respective unique signal characteristics...

Adjuvants such as surfactants are commonly incorporated into agrochemical formulations to enhance the biological efficiency of foliar sprays by improving the wetting behavior of the spray and/or the penetration of the active ingredients into the leaf tissues. Penetration accelerating adjuvants are known to increase the cuticular permeability and may alter the cuticular barrier to water loss. However, none or very little emphasis has been given to the impacts of adjuvants on crop water balance or drought tolerance, a very important factor affecting crop performance under water scarcity...

The diabetic foot ulcer (DFU) is the leading cause of the high mortality and morbidity rates of diabetes patients, and the DFU accounts for approximately 15% of all diagnosed diabetes cases in China. Traditional treatment is typically ineffective for DFUs. Here, we present a case of DFU that was successfully treated with an autologous platelet-rich gel (APG) and in vitro amplification of bone marrow mesenchymal stem cell (BMMSC) transplantation. A 54-year-old woman initially presented with a right foot diabetic ulcer at the hospital...
