BACKGROUND: Artificial intelligence (AI) enabled tools have been proposed as 1 solution to improve health care delivery. However, research on downstream effects of AI integration into the clinical workflow is lacking. OBJECTIVE: We aim to analyze how integration of an automated basal cell carcinoma detection and tumor mapping algorithm in a Mohs micrographic surgery unit impacts the work efficiency of clinical and laboratory staff. METHODS: Slide, staff, and histotechnician waiting times were analyzed over a 20-day period in a Mohs micrographic surgery unit...

Introduction Limited research exists on the association between coronavirus 2019 (COVID-19) infection and outcomes following surgical fixation for humerus fractures. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of COVID-19 on the clinical outcomes of patients undergoing humerus fracture surgery. Methods Approval to utilize insurance claim data from the Change Healthcare dataset was obtained from the Datavant COVID-19 Research Database. Patients older than 55 years old who underwent humerus fracture surgery from April 1, 2020, to March 1, 2022, were included in the analysis...

BACKGROUND: Iatrogenic vascular injuries (IVIs) due to diagnostic and therapeutic interventions are known but rare or probably under-reported. We present our four-year findings on patients with IVIs after catheterization or surgery who underwent vascular surgical repairs in a resource-limited setting. METHODS: A retrospective case series study between Jun 2018 and Sep 2022 of 35 patients diagnosed with IVIs and treated surgically at our hospital was included. The data on IVIs including patient characteristics, causes and type of injury, treatment, and outcomes were collected and analyzed...

BACKGROUND: Sleepiness is commonly seen in individuals working night shifts. However, in case of nurses, this sleepiness can be a major threat to patient and staff safety. METHOD: This was a prospective cross-sectional study. Data were collected between July and September 2023, and a stratified sampling method was used according to the departments in which the nurses worked...

BACKGROUND This retrospective study of 42 patients with popliteal cysts (or Baker cysts) aimed to compare the effects on duration and outcomes of arthroscopic surgical debridement with and without the use of cyst injection with methylene blue (MB). MATERIAL AND METHODS Medical records of patients who underwent conventional arthroscopic surgery (n=20) or arthroscopic surgery after MB injection (n=22) for popliteal cysts between 2018 and 2021 were reviewed. The MB group underwent arthroscopic popliteal cystectomy with MB as the marker, and the control group underwent conventional arthroscopic popliteal cystectomy...

BACKGROUND: Photoimmunotherapy is a treatment modality that induces targeted cell death by binding a molecular-targeted drug activated by infrared light to the tumor cells and subsequently illuminating the lesion with infrared light. For deep lesions, a needle catheter is used to puncture the tumor, and an illumination fiber (cylindrical diffuser) is inserted into the catheter lumen for internal illumination. However, it can be challenging to place the cylindrical diffusers in an appropriate position as the deep lesions cannot be often confirmed accurately during surgery...

Pediatric optic pathway/hypothalamic gliomas (OPHG) pose challenges in treatment due to their location and proximity to vital structures. Surgical resection plays a key role in the management of OPHG especially when the tumor exhibits mass effect and causes symptoms. However, data regarding outcomes and complications of surgical resection for OPHG remains heterogenous. The authors performed a systematic review on pediatric OPHG in four databases: PubMed, EMBASE, Cochrane Library, and Google Scholar. We included studies that reported on the visual outcomes and complications of OPHG resection...

BACKGROUND: Optimal treatment of patients with rib fractures requires identification of those patients at risk of pulmonary complications. It is also important to determine which patients would benefit from Surgical Stabilisation of Rib Fractures (SSRF). This study aims to validate two scoring systems (RibScore and SCARF score) in predicting complications and association with SSRF in an Australian trauma population. Clinical observation suggests that complications and criteria for SSRF is associated with anatomical and physiological factors...

OBJECTIVES: To study the regularity of central response to thermal needle stimulation of "Zusanli" (ST36) at different temperature, and to analyze the temperature difference of central responses. METHODS: Six male C57BL/6j adult mice were used in the present study. For observing activities of neurons in the hindlimb region of left primary somatosensory cortex (S1HL, A/P=0.46 mm, M/L=1.32 mm, D/V=-0.14 mm) by using a fast high-resolution miniature two-photon microscopy (FHIRM-TPM), the mice were anesthetized with 3% isoflurane (inhalation), with its head fixed in a stereotaxic apparatus, then, adeno-associated virus (AAV-hSyn-GCaMP6f-WPRE-hGHpA, for showing intracellular calcium transients in neurons transfected) was injected into the left S1HL region using a micro-syringe after scalp surgical operation...

The ESFCI allows researchers to evaluate interventions to improve visualization during TNES.

Carotid artery puncture is a common complication of internal jugular vein (IJV) catheterization. However, there are few reports about an aneurysm from the carotid artery that can develop into an occult mediastinal hematoma, leading to airway compression. In this case study, we present the case of a 71-year-old male who experienced an aneurysm and delayed mediastinal hematoma, ultimately resulting in airway compression after right jugular line insertion. Our findings highlight the importance of not only addressing local hematoma formation at the puncture site promptly, but also recognizing the potential for aneurysm extension into the mediastinum and the formation of an occult hematoma, which can lead to airway compression...
