Kaposi sarcoma (KS), a multifocal vascular neoplasm frequently observed in HIV-positive individuals, primarily affects the skin, mucous membranes, visceral organs, and lymph nodes. KS is associated primarily with Kaposi sarcoma-associated herpesvirus (KSHV) infection. In this case report, we present a rare occurrence of co-infection and co-localization of KSHV and Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) in KS arising from the conjunctiva, which, to our knowledge, has not been reported previously. Immunohistochemistry (IHC), DNA polymerase chain reaction (PCR), and EBV-encoded RNA in situ hybridization (EBER-ISH) were utilized to demonstrate the presence of KSHV and EBV infection in the ocular KS lesion...

Kaposi's sarcoma (KS) is a malignant vascular endothelium-cell-derived tumor caused by human herpesvirus 8. It is one of the most common tumors among human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-infected patients; however, isolated KS is rarely reported as the initial presentation. This study describes a rare case in which isolated KS of the bulbar conjunctiva was the first presenting symptom leading to the diagnosis of HIV/acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) in a 39-year-old man. The patient, who had no prior medical history, presented to the ophthalmology clinic with an isolated large, dark-reddish mass in the left bulbar conjunctiva and subconjunctival hemorrhage...

Anterior uveitis is the most common type of uveitis worldwide. The etiologies of anterior uveitis can be divided into infectious and non-infectious (idiopathic, autoimmune, autoinflammatory, trauma, and others). The viral pathogens most commonly associated with infectious anterior uveitis include Herpes Simplex Virus, Varicella-Zoster Virus, Cytomegalovirus, and Rubella Virus. Other emerging causes of viral anterior uveitis are West Nile Virus, Human-Immunodeficiency Virus, Epstein-Barr Virus, Parechovirus, Dengue Virus, Chikungunya Virus, and Human Herpesvirus type 6,7, and 8...

The ocular and periocular manifestations of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) are heterogeneous in etiology, manifestations, and complications. Etiologic agents include bacteria, viruses, parasites, and protozoa, which are most frequently transmitted via direct ocular contact with an active lesion or infected bodily fluid, autoinoculation, or dissemination from a distant site. Vertical transmission most commonly occurs perinatally during vaginal delivery. The complications of ophthalmia neonatorum can be severe with the potential for permanent blindness or life-threatening systemic involvement if untreated...

Monkeypox virus (Mpox), a double-stranded DNA virus belonging to the Orthopox genus, can affect vulnerable anatomic sites, including the eyes, causing a monkeypox-related ophthalmic disease. The Mpox virus may enter the eye via autoinoculation and cause multiple problems from mild lesions including conjunctivitis, blepharitis, keratitis, to severe ones such as corneal ulcers, corneal scarring, and rarely loss of vision. The aim of this article is to aggregate from an ophthalmologic point of view what is presently known about Mpox related ophthalmic disease (MpoxROD) and to present a particular case of a 41-year-old, white, bisexual, HIV positive male, with severe ocular complications...

A 35-year-old male patient arrived at the clinic, reporting a persistent issue of his right eye being difficult to open for the past three weeks. Alongside this, he had been experiencing a gradual development of lesions around the eye. Notably, about a month prior to the onset of these symptoms, the patient had engaged in unprotected intercourse with a male partner. The initial manifestation was a papule near the eye, which then rapidly progressed. Laboratory analysis of samples taken from the lesions confirmed the presence of monkeypox through polymerase chain reaction testing...

Mpox-related ophthalmic disease has been reported as infrequent in the current outbreak. We retrospectively describe cases of patients with confirmed mpox. Out of 100 cases of confirmed mpox, 11 (11%) had ocular manifestations, of these 9 (81.8%) were people with HIV. We suggest that in moderate and severe mpox disease an ophthalmological evaluation should be performed.

Los Angeles County has been facing a syphilis crisis since 2018. Cases of ocular syphilis have become increasingly identified and reported in the past few years, predominantly in HIV-positive men. Here we report a case of ocular syphilis in an otherwise healthy 49-year-old male in the Los Angeles County jail. This case study emphasizes the importance of increasing awareness of ocular syphilis so that it can be diagnosed promptly to prevent irreversible vision loss. Health care providers who work in the correctional facility setting need to be aware of this disease entity given that they serve a population with high risk of sexually transmitted diseases (STDs)...
